Banjo has a fan base in Japan to being at least a top 10 pick.
As for fan favorites not in at all, technically every character has fans and can be considered a fan favorite.

Here’s the problem with that support that I’ve noticed.

Since the creation of the Ballot many more characters have emerged, some quickly becoming Japan’s new favorite.

A poll conducted early 2018 still had the duo high up there, but other characters (such as Crash) were higher due to other factors (N. Sane Trilogy in this case)

Later polls have shown Steve and surprinsingly Sans as more wanted than Banjo. Steve of course is due to how popular Minecraft is (You don’t become second best selling game of all time through nothing after all!). Sans I’m assuming is because Undertale got surprise popularity (though it could a situation, a troll pick, though I doubt it)

Still some have hope for the Bear and Bird.

If Banjo was revealed to be a Mii Fighter Costume I would literally die inside, all my hype, Happiness and general well being would be the equivalent to throwing a large rock into a pond, I'd sink to the bottom and lay there- wishing things were different.

Come to think of it, its the same as the Microsoft Buyout of Rare.

I think they’re aware of how upset fans would be if they did Banjo dirty like that. Isaac and Shadow etc were one thing, but they’ve already been represented in Smash at some point or another. Banjo however has never had any representation in any Smash game despite the massive demand he has. With Banjo it’s either go big or go home

I gonna be honest that line of reasoning is dumb. They aren't going to say "if we don't choose Banjo as playable then we better not put him in at all". They will do what they do for popular picks they pass up, they will add them in as something else. Perhaps that means spirits or ATs or a costume but they aren't going to leave them out because it's go big or go home. If they are left out it's purely because they are being more conservative with the budget for DLC.

But here’s the difference between Banjo and the others. Isaac: is he popular? Sure, but his series is undeniably niche. Geno: is he popular? Yes, but he is also undeniably obscure seeing as he’s a side character in one spinoff game. There’s honestly no reason to make him anything more than just a Mii costume (sorry Geno fans). K Rool and Ridley eventually made it in because they’re actually important characters from important franchises. Which is exactly what Banjo is. Sure, he isn’t really relevant anymore, but there’s no denying how popular and influential he was during his time on the N64. And you really can’t say that about Isaac or Geno. Which is why I say, again, that they’ve gotta know how upset fans would be if they did Banjo dirty like that.

I don't know... maybe just Banjo & Kazooie, Sora, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Phoenix Wright, and Professor Layton if we are going off of characters that have no shape or form of any kind in Ultimate at all.

In terms of the characters that are spirits or Assists which, is the majority of characters people want I would say:

Geno
Isaac
Bandana Dee
Waluigi
Shovel Knight
Shantae
Rex & Pyra
Elma
Ashley
Krystal
Skull Kid
Dixie Kong

Good thing we have support overseas

Japan seems to like Rare characters since K. Rool was like number 1 in almost every fan poll over there and Banjo & Kazooie is always in the top 5 or 10 in the polls over there as well. Dixie and Krystal have some little popularity over there as well, but nowhere near the croc or the bear and bird's popularity.

The bear and bird are big in Japan, that much is certain. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the main reason Rare Replay was brought over there.

Which would be silly, since Ultimate is practically printing money.

This isnt me saying "if Banjo is a costume I'm boycotting Smash"

But it'd be so insulting that I'd totally lose any interest in Smash. I'd just move on to other things that aren't frustrating.

Change of tack but BK were popular enough to get some merchandise sold in Japan, doesn't mean much at all but its positive I guess:

The Tooty plush sells for upwards of $300 US, very uncommon and highly sought after.

There are also a few variants of BK plushies around plus a Mumbo Jumbo plush.

I think there was something on 5chan relating it the “Alefgard” leak that said Steve is in, his stage, described the stage, and said Banjo is a Mii costume. I’ll try and dig (heh) it up

There is a Japanese leaker that goes by the name 5channel saying that Steve is in and here’s what he said translated:

Stage is New World

Every other alt features female character “Alex”

The Ender Dragon is a stage boss, and can be turned off with the hazard toggle

Achieved to even further promote Minecraft on Nintendo Switch and strengthen bonds between Nintendo and Microsoft

Banjo Kazooie is a Mii Fighter costume

If they are being conservative with the budget then Banjo and Kazooie would still work if that's the case. High fan demand = free hype = more Pass purchases. Phil Spencer being very cooperative leads to fewer hurdles unlike the negotiations nightmare that would come from Square-enix. Wouldn't it also cost a lot more money to acquire the rights to use Minecraft due to it's popularity and how much revenue it rakes in?

I still firmly believe that Phil's dedication to the duo really makes them far more likely as full on fighters. His willingness to have them in Smash Brothers would no doubt lead to easier negotiations and would probably be cheaper to get the rights to. Even Grant Kirkhope, the darling he is, said that he would love to work on music for B-K again. He's done good work for Nintendo with Mario and Rabbids so getting him on board wouldn't be too hard.

From what I saw of Joker speculation before the Joker/Erdrick/Steve/Hayabusa/Doom rumor, lots of people banked on the casino, Velvet Room, or Kamoshida's Palace to be the stage. Occasionally Mementos was brought up, but as a worst case scenario for many. When the rumor started circulating people were kind of surprised and a bit underwhelmed at the stage choice.

That's, of course, anecdotal, so take it for what you will.

Ok before people get overexcited and panicky. Everyone saw that as Joker's stage from a mile away. I saw people talking about it being his stage the day of his announcement. It means nothing for any leaks.

If they want people (i.e. ME) to purchase the fighter pass, they better damn well have Banjo & Kazooie as one of the playable fighter packs. Cuz if they don't, I see no reason why I should purchase it other than to have a complete roster of characters and stages and feel utterly disappointed once again after Smash 4 ended with Corrin and Bayonetta.

The only way I was gonna get the fighter pass is if they showed all five up front. Not gonna risk paying for another playable grunt, or some FE character that doesn't interest me, or Steve.

Mementos is a no brainer choice. It's dull, but anyone who has played Persona 5 shouldn't be surprised by this.

Yeah like no fans before have ever gotten upset at doing the character dirty. We all love Banjo sure but he's not exempt from the way other characters have been treated and if you think he is then you're kidding yourself mate. Also it's funny you use Ridley and K Rool as an example as one was a pinata and one was a mii costume first despite being "important and popular" like you say Banjo is.

You seem to have misunderstood the point of my post. It wasn't about whether or not Banjo would be chosen, the person I was responding to had the insane idea that Banjo wouldn't be included in any way if he wasn't picked because Banjo is too important to be included as anything other than playable which is just delusional.
