So apparently Kirby's getting a manga called "Kirby Star Allies: The Great Pinch of the Universe", and guess who's on the cover (well, at least I'm assuming it's the cover) in front of both Meta Knight and Dedede?

Kirby Manga.jpg

Maybe this was already common knowledge (I had no idea there was a Star Allies manga), but I just thought it was cool.

Edit: Oh, looks like I was beat to the punch.

It says a ton that Bdee is put in a more prominent position in that cover. I mean, we're talking about the series' two most storied supporting characters, pushed into the background. That's huge! It gives the impression the Dee is Kirby's closest ally. Which honestly, is completely true at this point. The two are the closest to each other in size and personality, so it doesn't seem weird for them to be buddies. For example, could you imagine Meta Knight or Dedede being his helper in Battle Royale?

I love that they're giving the Dee this treatment.:)

I mean, his idle animation is even similar to Kirby's. The guy tries so hard to be like his idol.

Heh, kinda reminds me how Bandana Dee was chosen to be the Player 2 for Rainbow Curse because they felt that it wouldn't be as fitting for Meta Knight and Dedede to protect Kirby the way Bandana Dee can in that game. He really is Kirby's best friend at this point.

Considering that the various Kirby mangas doesn't use Bandana Dee much, this is pretty huge.

On that topic, have you guys noticed the sudden surge of BD merch the last year or so? Before the Kirby train plush BD had literally nothing, but now he has like 3 different plushies, multiple minifigs, the usual japanese filler merch like stickers and mugs, and more like this cute figure. It's almost as if HAL knows something is coming that will skyrocket the demand of Bandana Waddle Dee merchandise.

Food figures.png

HAL isn't a Nintendo owned company, so they have incentive to preemptively capitalize on a potential Smash inclusion.

Although I might be wrapping my tinfoil hat a little TOO tight lol. Who knows :p

Hey guys, what's up.

I haven't been on SmashBoards for a while, but now that Smash Ultimate jumpstarted another pre-game speculative hype session, I've decided it's time to return, and of course that means supporting Bandana Dee!

Regarding the "Any-Series" Woolly World theory, I saw a tweet that supported the claim, but apparently it linked to the same GameFAQs post. I'm not sure how much credibility it has at this point, but here's hoping it means something. The person who posted it made a distinction for why it would (and did) apply to Daisy but not Waddle Dee, but the whole thing seems convoluted.

In the mean time, seeing as how the Fountain of Dreams stage hasn't been confirmed yet, it's definitely interesting to think about how that could play into a dual-reveal.

I think Bandana Dee is at a really good point for his character and his potential. He's become a perfect candidate for Smash, with easy moveset potential, canon alternate palettes, being in SSF2, and of course solidifying his role as a.. tetartagonist? In other words, a main character.

With that all being said.. Please do add me to the supporter list.

I definitely didn't notice, or I would have bought quite a bit of it, lol. Now I have to go search for the merch.

Excuse me for a moment while I mourn my wallet...

I honestly just wish that Bandana Dee got more focus in this game. I find it odd how he had such a passive supporting role when the driving focus of the plot is trying to save Dedede. Like it would have been cool if he dropped in from time to time to clear a pathway for Kirby or help him fight a horde of enemies. Well, I suppose he got the better end of the deal than Meta Knight, who didn't show up at all (technically).
To this day, that's something that really bugged me about TD. I mean, I would have liked it if B.D. was initially leading the Waddle Dees' charge to stop Taranza from capturing DDD, but gets knocked out alongside them. After that, he would be the only Waddle Dee to get up after the attack and have Kirby follow him to rescue King Dedede.

Bandanna Dee manga?

Sounds interesting!

Either way I think Bandanna Dee is quite likely due to just getting more popular and not being an AT.

With Adeleine confirmed and Marx, Gooey and the Animal Friends already in, I pretty much have all the Dream Friends I wanted already. The only other one I would've really liked is a Nago/Pitch/ChuChu combo, but I know that's impossible now, lol.

Granted, I am still excited for Magolor. The others are all icing on the cake.
I'd like to see Prince Fluff in here, so he can be playable outside of Epic Yarn's co-op. I suspect that he'd be part of a batch that includes Drawcia and Galacta Knight.

I like all these little things that further point to a slot for Bandanna Dee in Smash. Ever since the game was announced he got tons of new merch, is in front of dedede and meta knight in a manga cover, FoD has yet to be confirmed (probably planning for a dual-reveal at some point), and the star allies description (Obviously that game was in development along with smash for a while).

You know, I've been thinking about it for quite some time now. But I don't think Bandana Dee's remained as part of the Royal Guard after Return to Dreamland. As you guys stated, it's kind of weird to not see him confront Taranza in TD's intro, and instead he's out there helping Kirby along with items. The same also kind of goes for Planet Robobot, where he doesn't appear close to King Dedede in neither the intro nor outro, and is instead helping Kirby along.
Another case: Bandana Dee's appearance in the Rainbow Curse. He's just fishing someplace Kirby happened to be nearby. (though admittedly he might just be on a vacation or somethin I dunno.)

But most importantly, his appearance in Battle Royale is what convinces me the most in this regard. Supposedly walking an entire night just to get to castle Dedede, instead of like, living close so he can get to his job early. Hell, he wasn't even aware that Dedede used a Kirby printer until he saw it for himself, which I'd guess he'd be aware of if he was still one of King Dedede's closest allies. There are also multiple pieces of dialogue that indicate that indicate this further.

EDIT: I'm kinda new to this forum, so I'm not too sure as to why the images are broken, I'm gonna try and make em smaller for now and see if it works.
EDIT 2: Looks like it didn't work. Also I have no idea why I decided to look all of that dialogue up.
EDIT 3: Just decided "screw it" and put in links to the images instead.

All things considered... yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense, though I've no idea why Dedede would fire him, or alternatively why Bandana Dee would choose to leave Dedede when he seemed so loyal in Revenge of the King. The only thing I can think of is maybe as he got closer to Kirby he didn't want to take part in Dedede's mischief towards him? I dunno.

Maybe it's also possible that Dedede regularly sends Bandana Dee out on patrol to scout out anything interesting (like food), or anything threatening, since Bandana Dee is probably the most capable Waddle Dee on Pop Star when it comes to defending himself and fighting. Like maybe Bandana Dee was sent to investigate the Dream Stalk, and then when he saw Dedede captured by Taranza, he went ahead and followed Kirby? But then that gets sort of thrown out the window by Battle Royale... Hmm.

dream friends are out now have fun with that
Hmm...so I just immediately downloaded the update once I read this, and you know what the first thing I saw on the title screen was?

Adeleine, Dedede, Kirby, and...parasol waddle dee. It was obviously meant to reference K64.

Well, I guess the Bandana=Dee64 debate is still as alive as ever.:ohwell:

Don't know about the other Dream Friends but Adeleine has Zero-Two mixed with Miracle Matter as her Morpho Knight theme, also I called it, Hyness's floor stopped being Hyper Zone and became Dark Star's core (where you fight Zero-Two).

It's one of many possible animations for the title screen. Like how certain sets of characters run across the screen? One of them has the 64 crew all together--except with parasol Dee. It's completely random which groups of characters you see. I just happened to get that one as soon as I booted up.

Aren't those characters randomized though? I'd think it would just be a coincidence.

Some are randomized, and some are not. There are certain ones that only ever come out with a certain configuration. Like, for instance, the Marx one that only ever has Kirby, Poppy Bros. Jr. And parasol Dee, to reference Milky Way Wishes. I've also seen one with all the Sqeaks, and one with JUST Kirby and Ribbon, even though she's part of Adeleine.

The way the one I saw was set up, it mimicked the way a K64 scene would have gone. Like, each one walked onscreen one at a time, like they were travelling together. I'd get a video of it if I could...maybe the Switch video capture would work?

I got ya covered, found video footage of it on Twitter. If you need further proof Dragoncharystary Dragoncharystary , I've seen multiple people encounter this exact Main Menu skit just like this (Along with other deliberate Main Menu skits like the ones PhilosophicAnimal described), so it's definitely no coincidence.
There was a problem fetching the tweet
But maaaaaaaaan, they teased with the trailer and then they do this... I feel like they really did use Bandana Dee for the trailer because of the differing Parasol Waddle Dee colors... We're pretty much back to square one now...

It's not disconfirmed, but why do you enjoy toying with us like this HAL?

Ah, of course, Twitter! Never even thought about checking there. Thanks for the help!

Actually, I had finally seen that skit again and recorded it, and was about to post it...but now there's no need. At least I know how to edit and transfer Switch videos now, lol.

I got some other funny skits along the way. I especially like the one where Dark Meta Knight tries to command the Blade Knights, and they just exchange these looks...

Whoops, sorry that I went and posted that when you went to the trouble!

Heh, though the disappointment of that 64 skit aside, the new ones they added are really fun, like one you mentioned, or one where DMK ends up splitting a random Dream Friend into four copies like he did to Kirby in Amazing Mirror, and one where Adeleine and Ribbon hide behind a painting to avoid Gooey (And I saw one where they hide from DMK too). It's really neat how HAL can squeeze in all these references and fun scenarios on the Main Menu alone. It just exudes that Kirby charm that I love.

No worries! I probably never would have even seen all those great skits had I not been looking for that specific one, so I feel it was worthwhile.

I saw many of the same ones you did, though Adeleine and Ribbon only ever hid from Marx for me. And I didn't see that DMK splitting one at all! But I did see one with him preening his wing while Birdon mimicked him, lol. So weird!

I seriously love HAL so much. I think only Smash and Sakurai himself manage anywhere near this level of fanservice. But HAL is definitely the best at it. That and hidden lore.

Which reminds me...the final arena in Guest Star seems to be slowly getting creepier every update. The plants are actually growing. There are theories that something big may happen in the final wave of DLC...

They definitely seem like they're building up to something,
the floor being Hyper Zone and then Dark Star (So Zero and Zero-Two) is interesting, and the plants growing actually sounds related to Dark Matter as well given that Dark Matter tends to take design elements from plants (Dark Matter has petals in it's true form, Zero-Two has a cactus for a tail). Then there's also something a anon on 4chan pointed out, if you beat Guest Star you can currently only get the normal crown you get for beating arena at lower difficulties, instead of getting the more regal crown you get for beating the arena on the hardest difficulty, it's almost like there's something else lurking in that mode we haven't seen yet.

To me, Battle Royale isn't strictly canon. You see, unlike the other current main Kirby games, it has a different director (Tadashi Kawai, while Kumazaki only acts as the general director that time), so it's natural to see a different interpretation of Waddle Dee and Dedede's personalities and motivations. Kumazaki was the director of Super Star Ultra, and as far as I can tell BDW and Dedede have remained unambiguously loyal/good, not to mention that Masked Dedede got brought back for Triple Deluxe.

Kawai's take on Dedede sorta seems to harken back to the "Dededouche" days, which seems a bit strange to do given the king's current roles. Then again, not too many people seem to be that keen on Battle Royale anyway, so hey. It's at the individual fan's discretion.

I'd say all this building up is largely due to Kumazaki, Kirby has been getting more ambitious plots and lore after he got to take directorial duties on most Kirby entries from Return to Dream Land onwards. Heck, Epic Yarn and Battle Royale feel less epic in scope compared to his games.

Still wish he'd focus on Susie again in the next game though...

Very good points! There's definitely something up. Another thing pointing to this is the alterations to Guest Star's save system: Now it's possible to continue from any previous amount of progress, with any character, making it easier to get to the end with everyone. But most importantly, it allows you to continue from even a complete run's save--and where does it start you when you do that? At the beginning of round 5. AKA, as close to the final boss as possible.

Yeah...something's afoot. And I can't wait to see what.

It's pretty obvious that another boss, almost 100% 0³ is being added in Wave 3. This IS the fanservice game after all.

The real question is if they'll make it a whole new kind of 0, or if they'll just rehash 0² with the Whatever Star since he's the fan favorite final boss.

If it is 0, I doubt they'd half-a** it. I mean, they could have easily just copied Artist's moveset for Adeleine, which I actually expected, and would have been fine with. But they went all out, and made her about 99% unique. Nor did they have to create fully animated HD models for the entire Squeak Squad, but again, they did. If 0 is to be in this game, he will be brand new. I can almost guarantee it.
