Probably all 3rd party characters that have 0 representation in Smash, but I just don't buy that Nintendo would go "oh, wait, no we can't add X character because they're a png right here"
If anything, they'd just add a Fighter Spirit that'd exist along the other spirit just like the Lucas and Mewtwo trophies from Smash 4.

Honestly, I'm kind of pleased that we got SOME kind of representation. I had a slight fear that we'd just get absolutely left behind.
However, Spirits aren't a 100% deconfirm just yet.

This is exactly how I'm feeling about Elma. To get rep, especially in a full Spirit battle IS a really cool thing, and it doesn't necessarily mean deconfirmation either. It's nice not to feel left behind.

It helps I really love the concept of Spirits and Spirit battles. It's just nice to see so many characters with cool conditions for their fights.

You know, I like how we're all taking this in stride, and not losing our collective heads over this. I'll be honest, I was a bit shocked at first,but then I remembered, Spirits would "deconfirm" just about EVERY character from Nintendo, and I can't imagine 3rd parties being the ONLY DLC we get for this game...

They do. There is a Knuckles spirit, and a Knuckle Joe one.

If a character is an assist trophy or Mii costume, then that would be a cause for concern. From how it's been described, a character being a Spirit is about on par with a character being a trophy or sticker in terms of confirming that they won't be DLC.

If every Spirit meant that the character couldn't be DLC, then there'd barely be any options left, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Nintendo characters.

At least Bandana Dee has been acknowledged in some form in the game, I was scared that he would be absent again with no spirit and not being playable. On the bright side, the 3 mages from Star Allies are also spirits so that's cool (they're giving Star Allies some love which is very nice to see). I now expect Hyness and Morpho Knight as spirits too, that way I'll be playing as Meta Knight with his beta spirit lol.

I wonder if there are any Battle Royale-specific Spirits. We've seen Return, Robobot, and Star Allies. We haven't seen Triple Deluxe and Battle Royale, of the recent set of games.

Yeah guys, let's just stay calm for now.
The ballot pretty much gave them a list of characters that that they absolutely had to include as spirits at the very least. It would be incredibly odd if a popular first party, a character with no rights issues, was left out in what is Ultimate's equivalent to trophies. Of course, we had reasons to be suspicious due to select characters not being seen before now, but that ended up just being a coincidence. If I had to guess, the bulk of spirits were decided way before DLC was being locked down. For right now, there's no reason to think we can't see something like Lucas and Mewtwo's trophies in 4 happen.

Even if this is truly bad news, let's be happy we actually got through to Sakurai this time. Remember that Bandana was absolutely nowhere to be seen in Smash 4. It's entirely possible that his presence on the ballot is what assured his role as a primary spirit rather than a supporter. Just look at what happened with K. Rool, at first the fans were given something that wasn't quite what they wanted but everything turned out fine in the end.

Given that, I hope that Captain Syrup will get big support in the future. Did she get a spirit, at least? It's rather odd that they showed other Wario characters, but not her.

They haven't shown literally everything in the game though.

That said, the main point of interest is that the base roster clearly leaves 4 empty spots, despite the fact that we're getting 6 DLC characters. This adds credence to my theory that we could get a separate DLC character menu like for 4 3DS.

They were decided before DLC, and spirits are more "we don't have time for trophies, let's just grab some artwork and add stats to it to acknowledge this character" and "we don't have time to add this character, make them a spirit for now and then we might add them as DLC or something" than anything.
Stop treating them as "yeah this character will never be in Smash, let's just throw them in the 'you tried, here's a spirit' section".

I don't know if they'd do that, I mean for the 3DS version everyone had their own screen, however on the Switch, unless your playing online or with other switches, everyone has to share a screen.

I might stay off of smashboards and social media until the game is released if this is true .
And about your theory, wouldn't they just shrink the character's box to fit the other DLC characters in there? Then again, it might be too small for the player to find their character, so I really don't know what they'll do with the DLC placements on the character select screen.

1. Bandana Dee, for the first time ever, has ACTUALLY APPEARED IN SMASH BROS
2. Bandana Dee and Waddle Dee are two completely different Spirits. We finally have ACTUAL validation and Sakurai's acknowledgement that Bandana Dee is absolutely his own character, and not just a generic mook in a hat

This only means good things in terms of his importance. He'll continue to appear in Kirby games, and he'll be absolutely ready for next time.

Exactly what I've been saying this whole time. Spirits don't deconfirm characters if they did any character created by Nintendo that didn't debut before December 7th 2018 is deconfirmed. Then that means DLC would ONLY be 3rd party characters that don't have a franchise already represented in Smash or brand new never before seen Nintendo characters debuting within the next year. How likely are either of those options? Slim to none. So if Spirits deconfirmed characters then the only 1st party characters they can even choose is a Gen 8 Pokemon (which is likely) or a Fire Emblem 3 Houses character. Since those are the only 2 Nintendo games (that we know of) which will have brand new characters never introduced in a previous title that don't have a spirit already.
