The D/P Kick-off Exhibition Match!

When: Saturday, May 5 at 12:00PM (noon) Pacific Time
Where: Over WiFi!

This is a randomly seeded double elimination tournament, in which rounds consist of one game, and the final games (Loser's Bracket, Winner's Bracket, and Championship) will be best out of three.

Participants may start their matches as soon as they know who they're fighting. If a time conflict occurs (due to Time Zone, school, work, etc.), please organize with your opponents when you may fight each other. This tournament is expected to run over several days!

Rules--
This tournament only allows pokemon that are obtainable in Sinnoh before the National Dex. We're not expecting you to complete the game in two weeks (it seems you can battle from the get-go, anyone please correct me if I'm wrong!), so to make it fair for everyone and to allow a nice absorption of the game that everyone has been waiting for, we're only allowing the pokemon available before the National Dex (Note that you may import, but they must be found on the Sinnoh Dex list link that follows). Remember, this is just the exhibition match! ;)
Here is a link to the Sinnoh Dex.

+You must use the WiFi option that allows you to automatically set your pokemon at lv.50.

+No repeated attached items allowed.

+No two or more of the same pokemon on the team.

+Banned Pokemon: You may use Sinnoh Dex Pokemon only. Dialga, Palkia, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Manaphy are not allowed from this list. You can safely assume that Poketore pokemon, the other legendaries, or any other pokemon that are not in the Sinnoh Dex link above are not allowed.

+No last pokemon self-destruction.

+Sleep Clause: You may not put more than one pokemon on the opponent's team to sleep, however if the opponent uses the move Rest (or any other self-inducing sleep move), that/those pokemon does/do not count when applying this rule.

+The moves Double Team, Minimize, or any other related attacks are prohibited. However, Sand Attack, Smokescreen, etc. and pokemon with Sand Veil (or any other abilities that act similarly) are not.

+OHKO Moves such as Sheer Cold, Guillotine, and Fissure are not allowed.

You may switch your pokemon and/or items around between tournament rounds, but interchanged pokemon/items must still abide by the rules.

Anything obtained or manipulated through a cheating device (Gameshark, Action Replay, etc.) is not allowed.

------------------------------------------------------
Full info and updates, see this link!
------------------------------------------------------

(Note that names and friend codes will be shared within the link above, and that 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place winning teams will be posted there as well.)

As of APR 26--
64 Participants, 4 on Waitlist.

Deadline for signups is May 2!
Finalized Bracket will be shown Thursday, May 3, so everyone can see who they're fighting first round!

Okay, I think that's all the info!
Hope to see you there! ;)

PS: (You can sign up here on this thread and I'll add you to the list, you just have to make sure to follow the updates in the link I posted above!)

The only problems I have with this tourney...

+You must use the WiFi option that allows you to automatically set your pokemon at lv.50.

+No repeated attached items allowed.
Lv.100 battles would probably be more accurate for competition.

No competition uses item clause. At least no good ones.

I also can't say I completely agree with the sinnoh dex rule, but meh.

Ok I´m up for it, but lv100 would indeed be better since all EV trained pokés is for that lv since there´s real differences between lv50 and 100, but that´s to much to explain, nice with item clause, since people will not use leftovers on every pokémon like always..
Lol just realized that there is only one Gaburaisu/Gachomp counter with the pokémon limit, weavile

Pokemon at level 50 can fully make use of complete EV training. Me and my friends do it all the time on ADV. I know it's a humongous difference between the LV 100 metagame, but to be honest, I feel it is a lot more balanced.

This tournament is using Sinnoh Dex only because I wanted to design a nice and easy start to D/P battles over WiFi. Believe me, it's not going to stay this way.
I'm not so sure about weavile being the only counter, but then again, I am but semi-knowledgeable of the new stuff goin' on. :/

So, you're signed up, Smasher89. Anyone else? :)

Let's say you EV a reversaler to have 1 HP left after 4 subs at lv100. At lv50, there is a very real possibility that they would have exactly 25% left after 3 subs, and unable to sub again.

The same number of EVs needed for a DDmence to outspeed an adamant heracross changes at lv50. In fact, every speed barrier changes between lv50 and lv100 battling. If you only try to beat a pokemon by one point of speed (like you should), at level 50 they may and probably will still outspeed you.

And then, people often give their pokes certain amounts of EVs to just OHKO other pokes... for lv100. At lv50, everything deals slightly less damage. Granted, the chance for their foe to live is small, but it's still there.

Level MATTERS.

I had an idea for something like this. An early game tournament befoe things get too serious. Can we have a low level cap? like 20 or 30? I can't speak for everyone else but I know I won't be anywhere near level 50 by the 5th? Level 100? Um, yeah right.

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade though so if everyone wants a "real" battle I'll just stick to playing against friends. But low level tournament (Doubles could be cool) just seems fun to me.

edit: I realize there was a Wi-Fi option to set your pokes at lv.50. Still, I would've liked the lower levels. :p

AGREED I´ve pokés with like 301 HP just for Seasmic toss/other things and like 338HP for leftovers recovery, "perfect" def, Sdef and attack, so my team won´t work as good as it should,

LG386, I didn't say that level didn't matter, I merely said that I felt the game itself was much more balanced at Lv. 50. While most of the powerful dragons are disabled at that point, many more pokemon become useable. Sure it won't fit in with smogon standard numbers, LV100 is completely different. I'm am but a supporter of the level 50 metagame. So sue me. :p

LOL, actually, I had it so everyone should get a level 30 team ready, but a friend of mine who has the import advised me not to do this as it is very slow to level up your guys in D/P. (Although he did admit that it was mostly because of the battle animations, which I'm sure many would like to see just as the game is coming out.) So I just placed a rule saying instead to just choose the option at the WiFi center.

Um.... lol?

The game doesn't just upgrade your level to 50. It can also downgrade. By making it lv50 battles all you're doing is messing with stats. The pokemon you can use doesn't change. If I wanted to use TTar in a lv50 battle, I could.

Also, why the freak are you banning the psychic trio and leaving gaburaisu permitted? I can't believe I overlooked that. There is no way those three are going to be uber. They've only got a base stat total of 580. Just because they're legendary doesn't mean they should be banned.

Um. Leafgreen. I don't think he is allowing any legendaries. I think those are just the only ones he mentoned. Besides as he said no one is (likely) going to be that far in the game. That's why he said to use to option to change your pokemon to level 50 instead of training them to level 50.

PP, you would have my support in making it a level 30 tourney.

Gaburaisu will own even more in this tourney then elsevere, and I think the 252-252 will be the one used, since perfect stats won´t matter in the same way as i lv 100;_;
People got lv 100s the first week so why wouldn´t they get far in the game?

Because some of us have lives. I wouldn't even have any level 100 pokemon when I beat the Elite four let alone within a week.

Yeah seriously, why even get this game when the D/P generation of Netbattle will be available soon afterwards?

I hate flying through games at supersonic speed.

playing the real game?, gets to listen the real music , battle animations, with more..I wouldn´t have new lv 100´s in a week but it doesn´t take that much time with lucky egg and pokérus, have played pearl like 350h+ and haven´t even started to think about getting the 5star trainercard yet, first of all, I need a team that works good cometive..

Sorry, I was talking about the current game. My mistake for not having clarified.

Anyway, this debate about the psychic trio happened not too long ago in the very same thread as the tournament. Basically I justified this rule by stating that these three cannot be bred, and/or caught multiple times. Allowing them for this tournament just wouldn't be fair, especially if down the road people find out that the one they caught is actually imperfect (not the right nature or IVs, etc.), and since there is no known way of cloning pokemon, they're pretty much stuck with something until some random person doesn't want their "perfect" pokemon anymore. And please, don't get me started on hacked pokes. :/

Thanks, Chill, I appreciate it, but there's already more than 50 people coming to this thing... ^_^'''
When the rule about level 30's was there, it was not greeted well by my fellow players (and they're quite respectable strategists, if I do say so myself).

And even then, that's pretty **** lucky to have. I have these myself, but I know there's tons of people still looking for these.

EDIT: Wait, Garubaisu (or whatever) is Garchomp, right?
(I do NOT know the Japanese names!)

Yes, Gaburaisu is Garchomp. I don't know many of the english names, although gaburaisu is the only one I actually REFUSE to call by its english name. And although I agree with your rationale for the psychic trio, I don't agree with banning them and leaving gaburaisu permitted. And yes, I'm actually considering joining.

Anyway, one other thing I'd like to know. Will we actually have an array of items to choose from with item clause like this? I mean, by then will we have access to CB, CG, CS, Life orb, lefties, salac/liechi/petaya?

I have no idea. The point is to be on your toes with competitive strategy with what you "start with," so to speak. At this moment, all the items are allowed. If we find something critical about that though, there'll be changes there, too. My friend BlueKiKatana has been helping out with all the questions in regards to keeping with the goal of this first tournament (since he has an import, if I hadn't mentioned that already), so hopefully he'll have something to say about that. Thanks for bringing that up! That was a very good point I had not thought of yet!

I'm ever so grateful you're considering showering us with your high graces :p

You wanna be signed up under smogon? (I could've sworn I saw you there a couple days ago. LOL, I wouldn't doubt you were a member there anyway.)
Yeah, plenty of people signed up along with skarm to represent smogon.

Man, I'm so nervous now that he's there... >_<

Well I was hoping of joining the pokeman Metagame in DP(since the Physical/special moves make the strategy more interesting.)

Well I guess you can count me in. But I doubt I will complete part of my EV trainin' in 12 days.
so....ummmm expect to fight a n00b on the fifth.

Is there a way to play Pokemon D/P on your Wii? Like there was with the N64 and Gameboy games? Because I really want this game but I dont have the money to buy a DS.

I wonder how the Pokemon names will be displayed on my screen when I'm fighting a NTSC Pokemon vs my Japanese one and the other way round :p

That'll be interesting :)

EDIT: I added a poll on the tournament page in the home site. People are wondering if two weeks is enough time to get a full team ready. (Personally, I think there is, but it's not like I've played the game, so I wouldn't know for sure. Whatev.) Let me know what you guys think!

From my own experience I can tell you it's not. Like someone said before, a LOT of animations are that much slower than in RSE. This makes the game feel pretty slow when it comes to progressing and levelling your pokemon, as it takes probably twice as long to finish a single battle then it took in the earlier games.

If I join I know I won't be fully prepared. Trying to beat an RPG in just two weeks is not going to work for me. I will probably be joining anyways. I can't wait to lose to some elitist pokefans.

Nah, the point is not trying to beat it in two weeks, thus the Sinnoh Dex Pokemon Only rule. :)

*sigh*

Two things....

1) I may have to pull out, due to only having one week to actually spend any real time on this game (sorry, but school is more important than gaming).
2) If I don't pull out, I'm not playing for BM anymore, partially because the admin has gotten to be a jerk recently, and mostly because the forum and nb server don't actually exist anymore. (So I wouldn't be playing for anyone, then.)

edit: screw what I said on #2.
