The Brawl hype train was the equivalent of someone with ADD on a cocaine trip... We were getting something new and exciting with almost every other reveal the Dojo gave us. This lasted all the way until the game was actually released and many were left disappointed with the final product thanks to unrealistic expectations.

Smash 4 seems to be taking the opposite approach; slow and steady. I think this will actually be for the better. I'd much rather have a little pre-release hype and be pleasantly surprised than be totally hyped and then left disappointed like with Brawl.

I agree with this sentiment. That is actually what my sister and I discussed quite a few months ago when we were already anticipating how the updates would work. It is much more favorable to be surprised in the end. I feel like that is a part of why Melee is one of my favorite games ever. I didn't follow any of the pre-release hype, so the entire game was a fresh experience. Brawl was the opposite. I didn't like it very much initially and it never retained the longevity that Melee did. I think it is because I spoiled mostly everything. The few surprises were memorable though.

personally I like to know what I am buying, if ridley is not in I need time to get over it and not find out and be disappointing on day 1

I really don't understand people like you... Will Ridley being in or not REALLY effect your enjoyment of this game?

Maybe it's my lack of true character loyalty that allows me to be comfortable with the idea of maining someone new... I just pick a character that's fun to play as and stick with them.

To be fair the characters make the game for most people. The original tagline was "Duke it out with your favourite Nintendo characters" after all, so it's reasonable for people to want to play as their favourite Nintendo characters.

Of course if said character isn't in it, it's disappointing but by this point there's surely someone you like on the roster.

Personally waiting patiently for the Yoshi reveal, but like Arcadenik my hype took a hit after I discovered once again the other half of my name was being reduced to a single move for a character who has far more unique and interesting options available to her at this point.

Luckily like Morbid the community here keeps me vaguely interested and if worse comes to worse Miiverses terrible character suggestions remind me it could always be worse.

If you burn up all your hype, you'll go through a hype crash. Best to take things nice and slowly, enjoy the small things, and lower your expectations. Being let down on filler updates while expecting more revealing, spectacular updates will just burn you out.

That's what I love about game development updates. I love the updates just as much as the wait.

Yeah exactly. The point is that every day this game takes at least 15 minutes for the update, so it's impossible to just not get hyped. Almost every day is one of the first things I start to think about. They should stop updates altogether imho.

I'm trying not to be impatient about it and know I'm not entitled to anything but have been hoping for the Zelda reveal a long time now. I think once she is revealed my hype for the game will be much higher than it is now. I am really excited about the game regardless, I hope we get a release date soon.

Back in my day we waiting for games uphill both ways with no constant information and we liked it
Back in my day, waiting for a new game meant just going about my life and doing other things until the next new game or a sequel just happened to be out in stores or show up in a commercial.

And I most definitely liked it. Back then.

But that was before I discovered the internet. ¦D

Yeah, back in the day when waiting for Melee pretty much meant praying that Nintendo Power would make some mention of it in their next issue. Maybe that's another reason why the wait for Brawl was both exciting and agonizing, it was the first game Nintendo really had an online advertising campaign for.

It's kind of cool and sad at the same time that I was around when the very first issue of NIntendo Power came out LOL.

Losing interest? I wouldn't say that. Some days I am feeling more hyped for the game than others, but I wouldn't say I am any less interested in playing it when it comes out.

I'm not losing any interest at all. To me the less information we have the more my imagination goes wild about what the game is going to be like (without getting my hopes too high of course) which then makes me more hyped.

It's actually a bit too early to say that this game isn't as hyped as Brawl. The first few months of the Dojo were rather slow. Sure every update showed you more than one picture which automatically beats what Sakurai's doing with Sm4sh, but hardly. At first, we were shown moves we already knew, some random items, obvious vets like Zelda and Bowser, You Must Recover, etc.

Then, the assist trophy phenomenon came to be and it was insane. Characters were actually disconfirmed. Then the next month, things got crazier. The subspace was introduced. And then we got our first newcomer since the first promo (Ike I believe). Then 3 other newcomers within the next two months (PKMN Trainer, Diddy and Lucas). Brawl hype was at an all-time high then.

Just saying, but we just started getting ATs. Who knows maybe things will go completely out of control again soon and Sm4sh will suffer from the same problems as Brawl. It's too early to say, but I sure hope it doesn't go that way.

Hmm oddly enough it's not tormenting or even losing interest as such as I have enough other things going on that I'm not clamering for it like I did during Brawls development cycle. Probably just a sign of me starting to get older or just that I simply don't get upset about these kind of things much anymore. Either or.
It's interesting, I feel exactly the same

so many people hated October's pics. I was disappointed but basically everytime a pic came up that wasn't a reveal (most days) i was like: well, that's cute, now back to school/Pokemon

No

I never had any interest to begin with

then why are you here?

What if PM happens to be a better game competitively than SSB4...?
A game being "competitive" is entirely up to the fanbase.

Regardless, PM is already set up to always be a "competitive" sucess.

Then again, SSB4 is at an unfair disadvantage there.

PM is a game that is frequently updated, meaning that if there are problems, the team will fix it quickly and reliably with the next update. SSB4 will also get patches. But not as quickly or for as long as PM will.

PM also solely panders the the competitive crowd, while SSB4 needs to try to pander to both competitive and casual crowds.

Really, the better "competitive" game is PM. But again, its ultimately up to the fanbase.

Ah well, both games are gonna be awesome in their final version.

The thing that information is trickling slowly instead of rushing out is good, imo.

I've kept hype levels medium, mostly. Toon Link's return was my invitation to play the game, and the lack of new info makes sure I don't get distracted from other things.

PM also primarily panders the the competitive crowd
Fixed.

They stated MANY times that while yes, their main focus is the competitive crowd, they also try to do things for the not so competitive crowd too. It's a game that can be enjoyed both ways and continues to be fixed so that it can be.

Just wanted to clear that up. :3

Does he really expect us to believe that someone who comes into the official board of a specific videogame isn't really interested in that videogame?
I believe it.

He may have been interested in previous Smash games, but the doesn't mean he's interested in the next one.

Hell, I has zero interest in Brawl until Sonic was announced for it. Other than that, I don't care for it even now. The only thing that kept me playing it was me becoming a hacker. XD

So yeah, I'd say he's legit. Smash 4 has my curiosity, but it's yet to get my full attention. ¦3

I didn't lose that much interest. With Megaman, the Smash Bros series is already complete. Ridley is just a extra bonus to get my hype to the max. Plus, we have Mario, Megaman and Sonic all in one game.

I'm already aware my other 2 most wanted characters will never make it so in a way, I'm done with Smash Bros after this title and I honestly don't see how the series can improve after Smash Bros Wii U/3DS.

I'm very cautious with this new smash.

Brawl crashed and burned, so to me, they're walking on eggshells.

How can you lose hype for a god damn smash bros game?

Everyone complaining about brawl were just pissed it wasn't a melee clone.

There are plenty of people out there that love all 3 games so it's a ***** move to try and take that enjoyment away from them just because you didn't like brawl

I am beyond hyped for game
And I don't need new information every day to keep me hyped. A smash bros game is coming out, that's all the hype I need

Everyone stating that they need to release new information with every screenshot are greedy. What other game developer releases daily content for a game that is a year away?

Not really. I'm following this game with much curiosity.

The daily picture updates have been fairly informative and revealing for the past month and a half, so I am satisfied. We've gotten things such as new item designs, assist trophies, information on moveset tweaks, stage teases, etc. They aren't major updates by themselves, but together they make the months interesting. I simply check the Smashbros website every morning before going about my daily business, and these updates are definitely enough to tide me over. I'm not super-hyped like I was with Brawl's development time, but I'm still fairly interested in this game and am following it steadily. I can be patient.

I look forward to the new year, as I expect updates to really pick up around that time.

"Everyone who thinks differently than me is stupid!"

Sorry, but that's about all that I got from this post. ¦D

How are we losing hype for a Smash Bros. game? The answer is pretty damn obvious and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out.

There hasn't been anything interesting enough for some of us with these rather lame daily pictures. Some of you are content with them and that's okay. Some of us are just bored by them and see them as a waste of time when it isn't anything significant or even mildly interesting.

Not all of us are blind fanboys that are just going to play any Smash game and are automatically hyped. If you are, then more power to you. ¦3

Not at all. Updates come daily with enough ambiguity to speculate and veteran updates come monthly. Of course, more info and newcomers would be awesome but I'm ok with this speed. Considering the first Dojo remained unchanged for an entire year before Sakurai started to update, we are pretty lucky. Plus, this game will be out in or less than a year. My hype can last that long.
Don't forget that Project M 3.0 and other Brawl mods can keep us entertained.

It's kind of funny looking back on the preBrawl days and how crazy people got especially in August and October of 2007 when the first newcomers since the E3 06 trailer were revealed.

First Ike was revealed after 15 months of no newcomers:

Then came the unexpected Pokemon Trainer:

Then came Diddy Kong after Peach:

Then after September we got Lucas:

Then the internet shattered with the reveal of Sonic:

And then King Dedede:

And then it was about two months of character silence where people got more and more agitated with each passing day:

Then people were too anxious to really enjoy the reveal of Olimar in January:

And, finally, the game was leaked about a week early and then it was pretty much a solid month and a half of this when people noticed that Mewtwo, Megaman, Ridley, etc weren't playable:

Good times, good times...

We've constantly been getting new information in December do I don't know what you're complaining about.

We know enough about this game to want to buy it. The daily pictures are a luxury that no other developer does for their game. It's really selfish to complain about a favour you get.

Smash is still a ways so don't expect any new footage until at least next year. They still have tropical freeze and mario kart to promote too so just get some patience

Losing interest in this game? Nah, I make sure I avoid hype trains, so I only show a little interest. If I hype too much, then no game in existence would be able to live up to my expectations. Besides, if there's another game that a lot of my friends are playing, I can easily swap to that game instead of being so focused on a single game.
Other thing is that I'm a bit short on money for now, and I'll probably get a new computer before buying the Wii U. So I'll probably get brawl and SSB4 at the same time a few years after SSB4 comes out at this rate.

With all that said, all the smash bros games are must haves for their systems. However, I don't get consoles for just a single game (Nintendo has other must have games though. Most other must have games are on all consoles or are also on the PC).

For now I'll just watch people play Brawl + SSB4 until I can get the game. I prefer watching Brawl over Melee (Maybe that's because I've played Melee against the computers too much, and I generally prefer to play a game instead of just watching it). I only play smash games casually though, because there's no one good enough that I can find in my town that can beat me (which I'm fine with, because I love giving myself silly handicaps so I can experience the game in a different way), I get a bigger challenge from fighting computers (accursed perfect blocks).

Warning: Lots of babbling

Games I'm interested in right now aside from Smash games?
Firefall - Only Shooter that seems to pull off open world well... too bad it's so early in it's beta, rediculously long beta at that. I play all the classes, favorite is the engineer, Specificly Bastion because it's the hardest to use (Perfect accuracy that requires you to always have the cursor on the tiny critical locations and never miss or you lose most of the damage of your gun), but also has turrets to do half the work if I'm feeling really lazy/tired that day.

Mechwarrior Online - One of the few games where I feel like my teammates are actually helpful (you need distractions+focus fire to get things done), used to carrying teams, and it plays a lot differently from any other games I've seen. My favorite Mech is the Catapult because I love jumpjets, and missles, and having a decent balance between speed, armor and power (whether it's splatapult, or LRM boat I love it). The Dragon is a close second, because I find the idea of a fast running Sniper with decent armor to be interesting, but also one of the harder things I've done in game (Because of this, the majority of Dragon pilots are too bad to help the team, and would be better off in a different mech). I also love the look of Catapult and the Dragon, even if the Dragon's massive nose is the main weakness of the mech (but also the excuse to slap on a XL engine for running fast). However, blame playing Mechwarrior 2 a kid a lot for making me love this game (Good luck learning the game, you'll need it.) I'm still waiting for the clan mechs and faction warfare to get in the game....

Starbound - Like Terraria but better, currently in beta though so it has things to work out. Though this interest might be short lived since both Minecraft and Terraria got boring to me after a while. I like using the Glitch and Hylotls, because I like robots, and Hylotls look more like alien things than fish (they don't look like fish at a glance)

Heroes of the Storm - A moba that skips the laning phase, and focuses on fighting a lot more. It also fixes some other problems I have with other Moba games. I just hope it's community will be good. League of legends has the worst game community I have ever seen, and the times I play the other games no one ever talks. It's based on blizzard characters. WoW is one of the 2 video game purchases I regret (the other being Xbox 360). Only played the first Diablo for a few days and got bored with it because someone used a copy glitch, and I didn't want to restart my character (when the whole point of the game is to grind, that's a big deal). Starcraft I only played for a few minutes, just to experience what it's like to be zerg rushed. So when it comes to blizzard I don't care that much about the characters. I ant to use some zerg, dragon, or werewolf in that game if they add some I like, otherwise I'll probably use Arthas, The Space Marine, and Tyreal (I'm a sucker for faceless hooded characters).

With all that said, SSB4 is the game I am the most interested in right now by a long shot. I mean, it's a bunch of characters I loved when I was younger coming together to fight, and now there's Megaman and possibly some other good newcomers as well.

"Constantly" would imply that we've gotten new information every day. This is false.

And exactly what new significant info do we have? The green monster thing from the Mii Plaza game hardly anyone has played or even heard of? Marth's unnecessary buff to his Neutral-B? Nintendogs? Not really anything too impressive. Skull Kid being an AT is nice since it's something new that people recognize.

And what favor? This isn't some luxury, it's just Sakurai playing around everyday and trying to make it sound interesting. You know enough about this game to where you want it. Just because that's the case for you doesn't mean it is for other people. Some of us just plain aren't impressed and aren't sold. I'm not interested in Tropical Freeze or MK8 and have still not seen anything to make me really want Smash 4. That doesn't make me impatient. That just means I'm not interested. I'm still waiting to see something that will interest me and aside from our 3 newcomers and the 3 platforming kings being in one game together, nothing else has done it.

Quit being so close-minded. Other people are allowed to think and feel differently than you. Calling people names and labeling them just because their mindsets aren't the same as yours isn't exactly the most mature way to handle things. Just respectfully disagree and go on about your business.

(Said by probably one of the most disrespectful and careless people around these parts. ¦D )

Most Games: No new information for months at a time. Occasional chatter like "Oh, I want that, it looks good."

Smash: Daily pictures with little reveals at least once per week. Several dedicated forums willing to discuss and hype up the game.

And yet people complain about how they lose interest for Smash.

Yea it's that bizarre nature that comes with a devoted fanbase. Fans praise something the most but also complains about it constantly. So goes the internet.

I like how at the end of the direct he said he hopes to talk about it more soon.

Sakurai: Gotcha!
