And you think I don't already know this?
Of course this game is doomed to have mario saturation.
Next will be the rush of Zelda and Pokemon characters again too.
Bring it on
I prefer necessary representation. Truth be told, Captain Falcon carries the entire F-Zero franchise on his shoulders. Adding another character from his series might suggest more prominent and illustrative characters from other Nintendo series aren't good enough; Rosalina is more deserving than every other F-Zero character, with Goroh being
the only contender. F-Zero doesn't need more representation right now. If it were a contending series with the big names then yes, it would—but Nintendo needs to first find a reason to revitalize the series. F-Zero unfortunately debuted simultaneously with Mario Kart and the two have quietly competed for Nintendo's flagship racing title. F-Zero and Mario Kart had N64 and GCN releases. The former slipped into substandard handheld territory before disappearing, while the latter continued to rise. Come Mario Kart 8, Rosalina, despite being a six-year old character, will have been playable in three Mario Kart titles.
So let's get this straight: Rosalina crowned two of the best Mario games ever: Galaxy 1 & 2, becoming an instant fan-favorite. She then joined the Mario Kart ranks with Mario Kart Wii, appeared in Mario Kart 7, and is slated to return in Mario Kart 8. Mario Kart has essentially devoured F-Zero, and is championing Rosalina now.
He's got a really good chance, but I'd be thankful if Captain Falcon returned by his own merit alone. They could cut him if they wanted to—there's a 99.9% chance they won't, but they could. Again, he perfectly embodies his series and needs not a fellow contender to express what F-Zero is about in the Smash Bros. domain. The Super Mario series has experimented enough that including Rosalina may be a method of expressing the deviant nature of Super Mario Galaxy, while the other Super Mario folks will embody more classic aspects of the series.
I love F-Zero, and would be very excited for a new game as well as a newcomer to Smash, but I don't feel anyone from that series deserves, let alone possesses inherent moveset potential to be deemed worthy. Captain Falcon joined smash with zero background fighting history, so they created a moveset from scratch. Nothing to reference outside of his racing—which lent the element of speed. Every other F-Zero character would need an equally invented moveset. I think the most viable Nintendo characters are those that join Smash with proven potential. We've seen Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, and Fire Emblem characters perform in highly active sequences, displaying an array of abilities to overcome (or undermine) opposing forces. With F-Zero, we've seen a bunch of people in racecars. Sure, you could count the GX cutscenes, but cutscenes apparently aren't enough to shoe a character into Smash Bros. (ehem, Ridley in Melee's intro...).
I was completely indifferent to Rosalina before her reveal, but I'm happy that she has joined. I think those disappointed with her reveal were anticipating someone more outlandish. By that leaf, we may have been spoiled with Villager, Mega Man, and Wii Fit Trainer at E3 this year. They set a standard that Rosalina might appear too mainstream for. Anywho, cheers!
