Well first of all, my drive-goal or whatever is only to improve and beat people who I want to beat/have something to prove myself against. But yeah, my drive and focus is 100% the force behind how I became so successful in Melee. Application of the drive is how I actually got to where I am today.
Let's see, some walls I got over.....
Being apart from people(distance)- Played with Twitch a ton and he naturally adapted to me. This helped me learn to keep progressing my personal metagame farther so I could be one step ahead of my competition always. When Twitch finally didn't wanna play me much(and when he doesn't wanna play me sometimes these days), I'd play on my own. I'd play vs a computer and do a move like I was approaching and then consider all of the CPU's responses to my move. Then I'd consider the strategies I could have based on that. Same deal for combos. This is kinda how M2K developed some of his tricks haha.
When I did hit some walls, I went back to basics. Everything is fundamentals to me, but what fundamentals are or how to exploit them has changed over time. I began learning to abuse Uptilt first. I also learned to apply DD'ing with Falco since it seems like a staple tactic with any character. I thought and rethought and thought again and again about laser uses and spacings because that move is so versatile and key to Falco's central play.
It gets much deeper than that and much more varied but those are examples haha.
I also played secondaries to learn tricks they used and bring it over to Falco or to just get inspired again.
When I got *****, I studied my videos thoroughly and found out how to beat every situation and actually built my style vs every character off of such studies.
Most importantly, I thought about all of this and did all of my innovating in idle thought. Not typing, not talking, just thinking. Driving, showering, using the bathroom, whenever I could think haha. I would just think about how to move differently or how to apply a concept in a powerful way or something like that. Straight up thinking can be done anywhere, and it's so helpful haha.
I kept my drive by playing mutliple characters in case I got bored with Falco(not usually the case and certainly not anymore), by watching players that inspired me on Youtube a lot(Shiz and then Mango come to mind), and by talking about the game with others whenever possible. It makes other people hyped and let's you get to let your excitement out while reinforcing it and pushing it farther haha. It's a crazy but fun cycle.
Does that help? =)
