I am going to "quote" what I'm responding to in italics since you can't really use the quote option in here. My response will be in bold(to differentiate) and critical things will be underlined.
------------
1. It becomes too general for outside observers to effectively follow.
2. People within the thread who are taking a different portion of the discussion have much more difficulty following the other branches.
-----------------
So far, I haven't heard a complaint, and while we had our 1 on 1, Hive and Alt/RDK successfully ignored us and continued their 1on1. They never pm'd me with a concern, and I have told them both to be very honest with me about any concerns or things that are bothersome. I keep an open door policy.
-------
But the downside is that it hurts the ability of anyone to absorb the thread as a whole because the line of discussion and the different branches become too impossible to follow at once, hurting the education value for outsiders and those on different branches.
-----
To the underlined text and actually, that entire paragraph, refer to my first reply in this message.
---------------
Since I place a premium and being able to use prior debates as future educational tools, so I believe that an outsider should be able to come in and get educated without being overwhelmed due to the simple wideness of the topic.
Your prime interest seems to be (and correct me if I'm wrong) on the education of the people that are debating at the time.
I think the best way of balancing those interests is creating a new thread when it gets too off-topic
------------
First of all, in terms of being organized and spam-free, we are the best room in SWF. That is a fact. People can come in and read the topic's title(which is the whole point of a title, a mini thesis) and already have a generalized direction of what to look for in posts. If someone wanted to actually discuss agnosticism, they could have easily followed Alt/HIVE/RDK/Reaver. If they wanted to delve into our slightly off topic 1on1, they could have done so too. You really shouldn't underestimate a lurker's ability to choose what they want:-p.
About making new topics, I'll talk it over with Med and CK so we don't have these sort of problems again. Hope you're not upset with me
