Sometimes big time news comes up, sometimes small news does, but either way, there aren't always proper ways of posting the news be it in a relative thread or not. Sometimes it beckons its own thread, but to how far might that even go? This is the official Zelda news thread and the only guideline is: when posting news, please justify it as a quote and site your source(s).

As per a discussion with Spire, this is removed from the OP to be officially added to the archive.

Officially translated Japanese interview with Shigeru Miyamoto

"I was hoping you'd ask about the most recent Zelda for DS. On December 23rd in Japan we are going to release The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, a sequel of Phantom Hourglass. It's really fun and challenging. On the other hand it might be a bit difficult for many new Japanese Zelda players who experienced their first adventure on Phantom Hourglass. I believe Spirit Tracks have achieved a unique style and I think you can anticipate the core value of Zelda!

And the new Zelda for Wii is beyond that. On developing the recent Zelda for DS, I found out that one of Zelda's core appeals is its uniqueness. Of course we are preparing gorgeous graphics for the sake of users' anticipation for a grand role-playing adventure. But what I believe is very important is the realistic, actual feeling players have experienced themselves; the feeling to have really been on an adventure, to have explored the unknown terrains, to have solved the puzzle through trial and errors, to have themselves grown through various experiences! In that sense, a personal sense of creativity is becoming important among us. We have assembled one of the most creative team for the recent Zelda for DS, and we want to be as creative as possible for upcoming Wii Zelda.

And on a more tangible note, we are utilizing Wii MotionPlus. What has been disclosed so far is that we are finding the most efficient way to utilize Wii MotionPlus to realize the realistic and actual feeling of fighting with the sword. As for targeting, we are utilizing the pointing system of Wii Remote on the previous title. This time we are planning a more convenient and comfortable pointing system." ~ Shigeru Miyamoto

“It is something we used to talk about with Mr Miyamoto, and he and I agree that if we are following the same structure again and again, we might not be able to give long time Zelda fans a fresh surprise. So we have been trying something new in terms of the structure of the Wii version of the new Zelda game this time. I am really hopeful that people will be surprised with the changes we have implemented for this Wii version. I hope that we can show you something at the E3 show next year and it is something we are hopeful will be surprising.” – Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma

Zelda Wii possible flight mechanic!?

Eiji Aonuma has officially gotten worse then Miyamoto when it comes to opening his mouth about Zelda Wii. Of course, this is a good thing, as the hype seems to be building for a game that we have yet to even see a trailer for. As tight lipped as they are about the actual game, little things keep slipping out. In an interview to Guardian.co.uk, this little tidbit came out:

"I have an eight-year-old son myself at home, and quite recently he started playing The Phantom Hourglass for DS, because when the software first hit the market he was too young. When he started playing with the boat, I told him: 'In the next Zelda, you are going to be able to ride on the train.' He answered: 'OK, Dad, first boat, and then train? Surely next time, Link is going to fly in the sky ... '"

Aonuma pauses, grinning. "I just don't know. If many people make many speculations ... some of them might be correct. Right now, I have to refrain from commenting on anything."

Of course, that wasn't all he said about Zelda Wii.

"With this attachment, your minute hand movements are more precisely reflected ... You can feel it so naturally and so intuitively. It's not just an improvement over the movement of Link himself: the realisation of your more minute movements on the screen will expand the entire gameplay. I believe that we will be able to offer some great innovations in the new Legend of Zelda. Of course I have to refrain from giving any details, but we are contemplating altering the way the game progresses in comparison with all the past Legend of Zelda franchises." He looks apologetic again as he catches himself short of giving something away. "But I have to stop talking here."

He also wanted to make an apology of sorts.

"The Water Temple in the Ocarina of Time was notorious for being very tough to conquer," he says. "I am most sorry that it was not easy for you to put on and take off the heavy boots; that all the time you had to visit the inventory."

"I am," he continues, genuine regret evident in his tone, "very sorry about that. I should have made it much easier to switch to the heavy boots."

His favourite among his dungeon designs so far, the Ocarina of Time's ingenious Water Temple is marred in his eyes by this slight ergonomic flaw. "Aside from the problem with the boots," he continues, "I like the Water Temple so much."

Twilight Princess a Starting Point for Zelda Wii

http://wii.ign.com/articles/105/1053034p1.html

Eiji Aonuma said:
"With Twilight Princess, we challenged ourself to create the most vast and realistic world the series had ever seen, but we don't feel that we were able to fully complete this objective. With that as a starting point for our improvements to the series in the future, we are of course working on a new game for Wii."

"For any game to be remembered for a long time, just like Ocarina of Time was, the game must give the strong impression that it has set a new starting point for future sequels to build upon. We are working to further improve upon the experiences found in Twilight Princess so that our future games can realize these innovations."

^ For me, that is the most important thing ever. The fact that I spent 30-40 extra hours after completing Twilight Princess simply exploring the gamecube-graphics-limited Hyrule that it had over and over and over in an attempt to study and decipher relations between it and other games in the series based on things found in the world (holy crap, run-on), I'm all about an open, expansive, and explorable world. Even judging from what they've done with Spirit Tracks (it's the largest Hyrule has ever been), I'm absolutely confident that they're going to blow our socks off with this one.

Thanks for posting that, LG.

Here's some interesting info on OoT revealed in a recent German interview with Aonuma. He's become somewhat of a spoiler God and I love him for it.

“So we had originally three temples which would capture the young Link, three temples for the adult Link and three in which he was to learn each spell – but instead we eliminated a temple of it. For the final game it was 3 plus 3 plus 2, or 8 temples to find.”

Zelda Director Eiji Aonuma has once again come forth with new information about the Zelda series, though this time his focus was Ocarina of Time.

In an interview with German website VideoGameZone, he explained that a temple was actually cut out of the game, and that Link was originally meant to learn three magic spells in the corresponding final three dungeons.

“There really is a difference between the temples which we wanted to integrate and those that exist in the final game. And that had something to do with magic. We thought of integrating some actions, some plot threads, and some puzzles that have something to do with magic abilities. We came to the conclusion that other, already existing, just regular items were a worthy replacement.”

If you want to read the rest of it you can go here, though be warned that it is a Google translation of a page originally written in German, so the grammar and sentence structure can be a bit messed up at times.

"Sheer grand scale" is the starting point for development of Zelda Wii

http://www.edge-online.com/news/aonumas-regrets-for-twilight-princess

Edge 211 features Links To The Past, an in-depth interview with series director Eiji Aonuma about his memories of working on gaming’s greatest franchise. But there are a few nods to the future, as well. We asked Aonuma about the ‘epic’ feel of Twilight Princess and its subsequent reception, to which he said:

“For Twilight Princess we used the adult Link and one of the interesting things about that was how we considered the precise proportions of Link and the world. The scale is because we aimed for a more realistic quality in the size of the environments of Hyrule and what that Link faced.

"But the question is whether or not we were able to incorporate any and all of the interesting game ideas that were able to take advantage of that kind of sheer grand scale within the Zelda universe. I am afraid that definitely no, we were not able to do all the things that perhaps with hindsight we had the capabilities to do. With that as the starting point, we are now developing the Wii version of Legend Of Zelda.”

Aonuma went on to admit that the discrepancy between imagination and representation was his greatest regret about the previous Wii game:

“In the case of Spirit Tracks it was relatively easier, because regardless of the actual proportions between the player character and the other objects, we can simply concentrate upon the many game ideas we want to realise. But in the case of trying to depict a relatively photorealistic three-dimensional world, we have to be very careful to adapt the ideas so that they seem to perfectly fit with that world. I must admit that's actually one of my very greatest regrets as regards the Twilight Princess.”

Games Magazine Issue #91 hit store shelves today, and inside it has a rather lengthy interview with the one Eiji Aonuma. Inside he admits he wanted to make a Links Crossbow Training two, complete with multiplayer... but the bigwigs told him to work on a new Zelda title instead:

"To tell you the truth, I actually wanted to create Link's Crossbow Training 2," Anouma said in an interview with games™ magazine. "I thought that we should do something more and better in the field of the first person shooter, based on our experience of the first game."

"For example, I was thinking that maybe we could intensify the multiplayer mode. The original game was really just a solo game but I thought that we could add a true multiplayer mode with multiple users playing together, from remote areas, over the Wi-Fi Connection."

Anouma's ideas weren't enough to persuade the Nintendo bigwigs however. "The fact of the matter is that a lot of people inside Nintendo insisted that I should work on a new Legend Of Zelda title rather than working on more Crossbow Training."

^ That would have been amazing. The fact that Aonuma is wanting to make Zelda multiplayer even FURTHER supports my suspicion that Zelda Wii will be co-op between Link and sword girl. I'm **** near convinced at this point.

@ Everyone - don't fear posting in here. This is a news thread and as such, the articles can be responded to here. You don't have to post an article to post in here.

Ah, I thought you couldn't post in here without an article. I didn't know discussions could be done.

But on the basis of co-op, I don't think we will be seeing it. It looked like Aonuma is wanting an "all or nothing" sort of deal here. Like he wasn't allowed to make a multiplayer title, but instead has to opt for just a single-player outing.

Then again, with Shiggy being crazy for multiplayer, and now Aonuma, who knows what we'll get?

I'm hoping for some multiplayer. Multiplayer is nearly always more fun that single player, and if done right, I think it would work with Zelda very well.

Zelda multiplayer would be great! Perhaps if there was another Four Swords game with Wi-fi, and minus the annoying GBA thing.

Spirit Tracks has multiplayer, so maybe Aonuma is planning to implement that into Zelda Wii as well... but who knows? Sword fighting against a friend Zelda-style would be a lot of fun.

I should have posted this yesterday since it was released yesterday, but alas, I did not. Anyways, ZREO has completed their Ocarina of Time album and it's fantastic. They released some 22 new tracks along with remastering everything else. Check it out:

Actually, I'm banking on a Feb 2011 release to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series.
Unlikely, this is Nintendo we're talking about. They'll hold it back until the Christmas so Nintendo's good game for 2011 sells well.

No, that's not guaranteed. How long have they been working on this game? I saw a few people talking about how it's been at least 3 years on Zelda Universe.
Actually it's been 5 years. They began in early 2006 before TP was even released. Here's an article.

Wow, apparently they're trying to beat OoT with this one. They've had plenty of time to develop it, so I don't doubt it will be released this year. However, I think there may be a small possibility that they'll delay it.

When I posted the link, I said it's highly unlikely we'll get three major titles in one year. It's not that there was no time to develop the game (we've been hearing about development since basically when Twilight Princess came out), but Nintendo would not dare bring out that many major titles all in one bit, but in a row (like how we got Metroid Prime 3, then Galaxy, then Brawl).

My guess is this. Galaxy 2 will come out in the fall. Zelda Wii will come out either during the winter or spring era, and Metroid will get delayed until next year.

Apparently, Super Mario Galaxy 2's development was being finalized in November. Check it: http://www.gametrailers.com/episode/gametrailers-tv/77?ch=3&sd=1. Could mean a Spring/Summer release date (I'm thinking May).

Also, recent Nintendo Week episode features Reggie Fils-Aime on upcoming games including a tidbit on Zelda Wii, saying, "it'll come out when it's perfect."

Mrs. Rainbow Sunshine Unicorn Pants? What a strange way to advertise...

They didn't talk much about upcoming Wii games this year at all, actually. And last year was incredible because Reggie can name 3 major titles? Think back to 2001 -- that was an incredible year. We had Paper Mario, the Gamecube, which includes SSBM, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, and several other titles.

I think that it's going to be delayed. This is Zelda, after all. It's like it's a tradition to delay the game at least once.

I really hope that they do something epic with Zelda Wii, and I hope that they dont' fall into the "get three items, get seven items, beat Ganny" thing again. I want something original and amazing. I hope one of the reasons why they're taking their sweet time is so that they can get some voice acting in. And give Link some personality like they did back in WW.

Yuck, I said this before but I really hope Link doesn't get a voice actor for dialogue.

Most of all, I'm hoping for a big sense of nonlinearity. I would love a modern Zelda to take on the attitude of LoZ, where they set you down in the land and just let you explore. I remember coming upon Dungeon 8 before 2-7 and trying to get as far in as I could with barely an inventory.

I do not particularly care for a big, detailed plot, but wish they would put exploration and the Overworld design first.

It would also be nice to see a lot of non-dungeon items, and lots of subquests and non-necessary items. It makes the exploration part that much more fun and rewarding when it's a special treasure as opposed to YAY 100 rupees :|.

I wish the combat would be a lot more brutal, again, like the NES Zeldas, and hope that the enemy designs are menacing and evil. I want to fight huge monsters, and actually feel like I'm in danger. I hate getting smooshed by a huge boss in WW and TP and losing one heart. The enemies should feel like a task, and all of them should require a truly different strategy.

I hope there are some more innovative puzzles as well. More points where I'm scratching my head and befuddled.

That reminds me of GOW. One of the most amazing thing about GOW is that the monsters actually seem menacing and dangerous (especially the giant ogres). Everything from the music that plays to the vicious look on there face.

Not to mention that the game has great voice acting and battles. I hope Zelda Wii adopts some of those things.

First: The fact that it has to be "perfect" before its release does not imply whatsoever that it is not going to be released this year, especially since it has had 5 years of development. Second: I want evidence that Iwata is non-committal to a 2010 release. I've been following this game ever since the concept art was revealed, and I haven't heard that from any sources.
