MLP, Fighting Is Magic Rule Change

MLP, Fighting is Magic is in a unique situation. The game has no official release date, and it’s not clear if the game will be ready in time for players to get up to speed in time for Evo 2013. For the Mane6 team, this contest represents and artificial deadline. We don’t want to put any undo pressure on them to release anything but their best effort when it’s ready. So, after talking to the Mane6 guys, we’ve decided to handle FiM slightly differently.

First, FiM will be back in a big way at the Evo 2013 Indie Gaming Showcase (spoiler, the Indie Gaming Showcase from Evo 2012 returns in 2013!). This year we will have multiple setups so a lot more players will get a crack at the game. This is 100% happening regardless of the results of the donation drive, and we’re happy to have the game back for a second year.

Next, we’re removing FiM from the running for the 8th Evo game. If FiM finishes with the most money donated, we will take the game with the second highest donations as the 8th Evo game. But, should FiM win the donation drive, Evo will sponsor an exhibition tournament and run it out of the Indie Gaming Showcase. The top 8 players from the exhibition will fight it out on stage and stream, like previous Evo exhibitions.

One more thing. As you can see, so far the FiM guys are kicking everyone else’s tails (I’m sure there’s a pony pun in there somewhere). So let’s make things a little more interesting. Evo will provide a $1000 bonus to the first place game. If a game manages to take down FiM and come out on top of the donation drive, Evo will spike the tournament pot for $1000. If FiM wins, the $1000 will go towards prizes for their exhibition.
TLDR
If FiM wins, 2nd place game is the Evo 8th game
If FiM wins, we ALSO run a FiM exhibition
$1000 to the pot of the donation drive’s 1st place game.
Don't stop donating dawg

It makes sense. The vast majority of that money is probably from people who don't play fighting games at all and just want MLP at Evo.
The MLP community is probably bigger than every community of every fighting game put together.

At this point we should totally shoot for beating MLP FiM. The casual MLP scene has completely forgotten about Evo and the Melee Evo Poll had 6k+ voters, Apex Melee GF was 13k live viewers at peak and the reception was absolutely amazing even from randoms and FGC stream monsters.

Take into account that each donor has/will donate 5$ at absolute minimum and about 20$ on average and I forsee a certain smash game in 1st place...and it's not Brawl:cool:.

Damn though, if you asked me if I thought Melee would be at Evo anytime in 2012 I would've laughed.

Who the hell gave money for Brawl?

Seriously though, good ish to everyone keeping this game alive. It is unbelievable that after all these years that Melee is going to be at Evo.

Guys its still too soon to say that we're in for sure.
I encourage anybody who hasn't donated yet to do so, we don't have duch a big lead that we can say we're in for sure yet.

Apparently they allowed the total donation to be seen and other games have now hit over 1000 and quickly catching up to Melee. As in like 300-500 dollars closing in. Well, now that we see this hopefully anyone donating to brawl will stop and chip in for melee instead.

Hey, I'm donating $50 of those to this (the other $50 are going to samox's documentary), so it was for a good cause. ;)

Skullgirls is the last great hope for the 2D fighters. If SG wins, it means much needed publicity for the game, and the indie team who has been struggling to stay afloat from day 1. If you don't know what happened you can read about it here . SSB is a popular series developed by a huge team with a large fanbase. If smash brothers wins, it isn't going to change anything; people who don't think of it as a serious fighting game will continue to think so, nintendo will continue making another game and SB will be as large as ever.
Skullgirls needs this win more than SB, this is the last hope for this game and the small indie team behind it. If you want to support genuine indie developers with creative ideas, this is where you should be donating.
Continue donating, just consider where you should be throwing your money, and if you are actually donating to help, or just caught up in the hype.

You came to the wrong neighborhood.

If this game is featured in EVO, people will see this game in a different light. If you saw the response from Melee GFs from Apex2013, you'd know this.

A lot of comments from places like SRK and Eventhubs have been relatively positive post-apex.

As much as I love SG, my heart is here with Melee.

Smash may continue to be as large as ever, but that's on a non-competitive level. We're striving to grow competitively.

Im not going to not donate because the skullgirls game is not doing too hot financially. My sympathy certainly goes out to you, but we are definitely in it to win it

This is wrong, and by the same logic if skullgirls goes to evo, then nothing will change. Your game will still not change. EVO will change quite a bit in both of our communities actually and most people know that.

I understand your love for the game, and I've read the struggles the team has gone through. I know the game basically never got a chance to take off in the first place and maybe it deserved to. However, the reality is those issues with SG happened, and they hurt the active playerbase. Look at how many people showed up at Apex for Smash. Even if SG wins, do you think it will draw in a serious group of players for the long term? This game is well over 10 years old with no online play built in, and yet it's as strong or stronger than some very recent fighting games that already have a spot at EVO.

This is important to us, too.

As far as I've heard form the FGC, SG is cool af, melee is gay af. But we should give you a chance, like you gave us that one time. lol I respect your community and good luck but I don't think anyone's backing out for that, we love our game as much as you do yours and think it's as amazing as you do yours, that's the funny thing about opinions.

As for the thing about the game living on with the support of Nintendo and not needing the exposure from Evo...you obviously are about as ignorant about our community as we are of SGs.

You realized we're 12 years old and literally worrying about how we can actually play the game, not that we've given up, we're find ways around it. Nintendo has turned the cold shoulder to us many times, the one time they recognized us is when they invited a few melee players to beta test brawl and took none of their criticisms and went back to thinking melee and brawl don't exist once the sales stopped rolling in.

SG community is actually really positive about Melee KrIsP. Don't lump them together with the rest of the FGC. <_<

That being said, he's here more for trying to support Lab Zero and less to get us to give up.

LabZero is in a really rough patch right now, so he's just trying to get SG exposure so that they can actually stay afloat and keep supporting SG.

I never did, just saying that I've heard very positive things about SG form the FGC in the past but obv melee has had some issues. I'm all for him supporting his community but like I said, that on guy is obviously as ignorant about our community as I am of his.

Ignorant isn't a bad word here, I don't know much about SG community, I've seen the game and it looks cool. But we need Evo too, different reasons but worthy all the same.

According to the above links, SG is ahead of SSBM right now for Evo by about $100.

I'm not donating to help or to support anyone. I'm donating because I want melee at evo.
