hmmmm kinda got me thinking.

What's some songs that you wish you could like because the lyrics are just so dope, but the instrumental is straight s***?

my first is definitely Nas - Ghetto Prisoners.

And, what's some songs with dope beats that are severely lacking in the lyrical aspect?

Diggy Simmons raps over Made You Look.......kid's nice. might have to check him out.

Kanye West Feat. Lykke Li & Santogold - Gifted
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2Tsv7KPk4s

Overall, i though this song was done well. But I couldn't help but feel like this beat was missing something/someone.. idk me and my friends always say "imagine if "insert artist here" was on this track"?

I'm a pretty big fan of Santogold and Kanye.. the only reason i know of Lykke Li is from that So Far Gone track "little bit".. but i like her voice.

Overall.. 6/10.. could have been MUCH better, but still good.

to me beats are like 70-85% of a bangin track.

you can be the greatest rapper ever of all time, but you have trash beats, no amount of ill rhymes are gonna make it sound good.

but on the other hand theres nothing worse than hearing an amazing beat get butchered by some weak clownass mother****er.

but yea its all about the beats.
Eh. Production is important. But not THAT important. If you have decent production and serious skill, your music is great.

decent productions = boring music to me. i've downloaded so many people who, lyrically, i can listen to them all day but i find myself skipping a lot of songs just because they're boring. i rather listen to an acapella than good lyrics over corny beats.

I think this is definitely the greatest song that i have a hard time listening to.

the first dude was very mediocre, the second dude however picked up his slack. i dont think either was better than luda's verse on the original doe.

Eh, I know where you're coming from. Like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest have great great lyrics, but the beats are just too relaxed. I feel you.

The whole song is dope. Premier's remix helped it a lot.

And Hey Mama is cool. I love that song. :D

lol i mean the raps are dope but the beat just isn't.....classic lol.
The raps are dope, but the beat is RAW. I love the song, the collaboration is dope too. DJ Premier, Kanye (he's not a sellout, I don't care what they say), Nas, KRS-One, Rakim? Legends and Kanye. lmao

I'm with you. Except Eminem also.

But I found some cool underground artists...
Check 'em out?

Thaione Davis
Skyzoo
Murs (not exactly underground. eh)
YU
Dynas
Basic Vocab
Termanology
Modill
Insight
Krumb Snatcha

Some of them you probably know. Thaione Davis, YU, and Skyzoo are hella raw. Insight sounds a bit like Common to me, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

808's and Heartbreak is surprisingly my second favorite Kanye album close behind College Dropout. The production and the insane level of creativity that went into that album makes it appealing to me.

Most of his stuff is on datpiff.

But you must listen to The Salvation. I'll throw up links if you want.

meh. i tried to give termanology a shot. dude bores the hell outta me. even over good beats!

skyzoo is dope. wish he'd switch up his flow every now and again.
Term's flow is nuts over the Premier beats. Each to his own though. I posted Term links before, won't drown you...but

Skyzoo's flow grows on you.

oh i'm not saying he has a bad flow. just wish he'd speed it up every now and again. i hate when dudes pick beats that adjust to their flow vs picking beats and adjusting your flow......which is weird, cuz i'm a budden fan and he doesn't switch it up too much lol.

None of the links are really the artists' best, just a sample of their flow, lyricism, and instrumentals.

Thaione Davis:

Notes in the Chamber

One Two

Skyzoo:

The Necessary Evils

Way To Go

YU:

BEST TRACK (that I've heard): Thought About It

All This Time

Dynas:

Figure It Out

The Apartment

Basic Vocab:

Sit on Down

What They Want

Modill:

When I Was Here

Music

Insight:

Bother Me By

Evolve

Krumb Snatcha:

Hip Hop

Killer In Me

And Termanology is dope. Strictly lyrical.

YU is dope. Listen to his lyrics and flow. Soon as i get the money, buying his album.
Basic Vocab's album is on itunes for like $8 i think. 20 songs. Well worth it. Except some songs have wierd hooks...

Krumb Snatcha is eh, not the best.

Oh, and I'm putting out an album later this year, would you guys tell me if you'd buy it?

It would be on itunes. (independent label of course.)

@cookiemonster: i'd have to hear some tracks first
Well of course.

I'll probably put a demo song out first. Might or might not be on the album, we'll see.

The Tracklist will be fairly interesting. 2 songs about ****, one from the victim's point of view, and one from the rapist's point of view.

A lot of the album is going to be on relaxed beats, but songs relating to issues are going to be on ominous piano instrumentals, similar to Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique.

I'm going to write the demo sometime soon, and I'll get the song recorded by mid-June, I think.
I'm getting a job so that I can record it (getting a Macbook Pro, Garage Bang is amazing), and I could get it on iTunes if needed too. I think it's $10 to put a single on?

Oh, and I'm going to produce about half of it, while my friend will produce the rest. No guests on the album, most likely (99% sure it's gonna be all me). The tracklist as of now is:

Album (Untitled at the moment...)
Track 1: Intro, or something similar to "My Name Is" by eminem.
Track 2: Song about taking it back to the 90's hip hop. relaxed beat and relaxed flow
Track 3: **** Part 1: Her Side of the story (her thoughts, etc)
Track 4: **** Part 2: His Side of the story (why he did it, etc)
Track 5: Song about politics( anti bush song, like Mosh by Eminem)
Track 6: song about war in iraq
Track 7: song giving props to rappers who keep it real
Track 8: song talking about how underground rappers can be unsigned and get more money than if they werent signed
Track 9: just a normal rap song. fast flow. quicker beat. cool metaphors, rhymes, etc. like " When I B On Tha Mic" by Rakim.
Track 10: song about Oakland. gonnna like walk around with some people to get some ideas for this. kinda like NY State of Mind by nas.
Track 11: song about 3rd world countries, gonna read up and this is gonna be a really powerful song, ya know.
Track 12: Man's Best Friend (song about my dog, this is gonna be a real song, emotional you know.
Track 13: P.M. (Premature Man) (idk, this will just like explain my thoughts and stuff, like how i joke around a lot, but on the inside im too mature for my age. deep track)
Track 14: Represent (a track about oakland, and just representing from where youre from. like, "born in '96 in alta bates, in california the greatest of all states." stuff like that lol)
Track 15: What Happened? (going from like 1994-present, how hip hop was like flourishing and then all of a sudden went pop, aka bad)
Track 16: Breaking The Rules (about not going pop, doesnt even have a chorus. really breaking the rules you know. talking about controversy too)
Track 17: Keep It Real (take a guess, ahahaha)
Track 18: Laugh Now (Mourn Later) (kinda like ice cube's album, i think? laugh now, cry later.)
Track 19: Greed (talking about how people are greedy and just want money)
Track 20: Acapella (track produced only by sounds made by me. the rapping will be on point too.)
Track 21: Let's Continue This... (me rapping acapella, like an outro. "I could just continue to rhyme and rhyme, but lets just continue another time")

now, this is just off the top of my head. a few of these I'm going to completely scrap. It's definitely going to have 20 songs, at least.

(in case you haven't guessed, im from oakland. haha

Thanks. I'm not trying to make money or anything, just have fun. But it's gonna be dope. Real music, you know.

Edit: Eh, some are going to be about me (like PM (Premature Man), which will have my outlook on things and stuff, and the song about my dog), but there are issues I want to cover. Oh, and all the songs about keeping it real are me, hip hop is pretty much my life. I listen to music like over 3 hours a day, at a point it was so bad that I listened more than I was at school, so it was like 7+ hours a day listening to music.

oh and I'll have a song called "Top 5 Dead or Alive" of course

The bay is the best. East BAY

yeah, i do. i think the lyrics are going to be the hardest part, cuz i have some experience producing music. Not much, but I've used software before, and Garage Band is easier than everything ive used, apparently.

mastering shouldn't be too hard, i can do it myself. I think that i'll keep my voice pretty loud, not too loud but yeah.
