the most awesome thing to do is to not move, and whenever the opponent tries to attack you, outprioritize him. I like to do that with Fox and his usmash a lot. :p

Maybe if items were involved...perhaps an explosion would launch them into the taunt at such a speed they wouldn't be able to recover (assuming the taunt doesn't overwrite the explosion's knockback).

99% of the matches I play, I'm not "trying to win," I'm trying to do different stuff to see what works and what doesn't work, and I let winning come naturally. Most of the time, I have a specific concept or move in mind (e.g. trying to work in x-air into a specific situation at different %s in the **** tent).

This leads to two things: learning when the best times to use certain moves are (i.e. improving one's game), and more interesting (albeit often longer) matches. The end result is a better player, and a more fun game. And it's not just a random theory I have, because I feel like I see the players that improve the most are the ones who aren't just trying to hit their opponents as hard as they can and get them off the ledge as fast as possible.
it's not a random theory. it has scientific support.

http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/122312160/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0

just read the abstract.

i'm not saying the process is identical, but rather similar. just my 2 cents.

edit: i just realized that abstract was a bit wordy. Basically it means chess players performed better after practicing individual specific strategies rather than just repeating entire chess games over and over. so basically this is exactly what DMoogle is talking about.

I don't believe just playing alot will help you get better. Ive been playing for about year(if I include time I took off) and there are people who have played the same amount of time and are better than me. You can play all u want but if u dont work on more advanced techniques, learn about different matchups and try new stuff then you will be at the same level forever.

People just play to win. Which doesn't make you actually get better. I usually record my matches and then watch it like 50 times just to see where I could of did a better play on my opponent, or I just spot some where I messed up that I can improve on. I also look at other people's matches to view there play styles and compare it to others to figure out the majority play style. Once I find the majority play style, I try to look for flaws then adapt against it with my own play style. Once get rid of the common mistakes from my play style that gets me punished and turns match around, I'll be able to play against pros with no fear of getting scraped.

I don't know how such a old forum got cycled up to the top, but the opening statement was wonderful. I have gotten very frustrated with people who have only looked into winning a match, seeing no value in improving. As if victory leads to improvement.

I believe true strength is found through limitations.

inb4 surri closing this (hope not though, no need really)

This game has limitations and flaws in the competitiveness and a lot of people feel there is no point in trying too much to improve, thats about it.

A$'s post summed up what I had in my mind for a while about improving.

You can't improve if all you do is play to win, because you're not exploring all the options you have and are rather relying on the same old stuff over and over again. Exploring more options gives you more ideas in more situations, hence helps you improve.

And ironically, it's by NOT trying to win that you allow yourself to play to learn.

If you can't push yourself not to do the same Falcon fair-uair-upb combo all the time, you'll never get further than that.

I remember talking to pros on galaxy back when I was a noob and after I asked them how to get better, they would all just respond "practice more."

I pretty much thought that you could become really good at this game within a few weeks, but boy was I wrong.

As I approach my 8th month online, I must say that most of my improvement has come from long hours of play and dedication. Anyone on the galaxy could attest to how active I was during the summer.

You cant get amazing in a few weeks. Takes months, even years.

i hear you kuz, i do, however, it's so frustrating when you are someone who has been playing this competitvely for 5 years and you hit a bump in the road you can't seem to get over.

good news is, i think i've gotten over that bump.

i agree with A$' original post, 100% percent and the past weeks i've been trying new things with fox and falcon, even with mario.

i stopped caring about winning a long time ago, but i was just ignorant and stupid thinking "well this is it, this is my limit, oh well"

but i didn't give up, and as corny as the rocky theme song now playing your head is..

i improved through practice, but i also believe watching and learning professionals play can help greatly in the long run because you usually pick up or try to copy what they did.

also, it helps to PLAY good players, because once again, you pick up on how they play.

I feel if I were to main luigi my spacing would get really good but I would get worse overall.

Idk why.

you are not the only one, luigi's approach is just horrific, best way is to bait link, but a patient link who has good projectile control is very hard to approach.
one way is to use luigi's slide grabs, after baiting the projectiles and avoiding them. sh aerials are always dangerous though because of link's utilt and the such :S

If there're two players with the same lavel... Link's gonna kill **** out of Luigi.
to win with a Luigi against a Link, either you have to be too good, your the Link has to be too bad... xD

how do i approach link with luigi?!! I CANT DO IT!!
Well, I usally aproach a good link with fireball, fair,or a nair. I just hit link's projectiles with b (boomerang goes back to link,Bomb bounces the opposite way), or I just dodge bombs and hit the bommerrang wit a fair or nair. After getting close enough I try to hit him with an aerial and then grab and throw him :bee:

can't Luigi n-air boomerangs?

I'd approach with aerials as Luigi can out-prioritize Link's projectiles.
