Why is there so much hatred and prejudice towards 08ers?

First thing: I apologize if this is in the wrong thread. I seriously look everywhere in SWF to find where this would be appropriate to discuss and the Pool Room seemed like the best place.

So why is it that we as 08ers get hated out by some veterans and discriminated? I'm assuming it's because some 08ers might post stupid things and then people just assume all 08ers are idiotic and noobish. Personally, I think that's quite ignorant.

I've been lurking on SWF since late '06. It was only just recently ago I decided to join. In fact, I lurk on almost every forum for a while before I decide to join it. Just because someone joined in 08 doesn't mean they're brand new to the site.

Anyway, I'd like to hear your guys' thoughts and opinons on this.

08ers are notorious for spamming, making stupid comments, and generally making fools out of themselves over the Internet. Now, because there was a time, probably before I joined where things were nice and peaceful, and everybody had something sensible to say.


In short, 08ers just act that opposite way we want them to.

When when there are newbies that joined recently that make stupid comments, we HELP them out instead of hating them out. In fact, discrimination against join dates and post count is grounds for an infraction there.

Thank you. If only I could say that all the time, but it's hard when there are seemingly so many of these kinds of people. And it really would be nice to have vets help stop this as well.

Like Alt said, this is pretty much universal to everywhere. But this must be the Brawl boards mostly, as I've heard of 08er's getting grief, but I've never actually seen it for myself.

Also this thread is like the first time I've looked at join dates in ages. I never knew Xsyven joined in 2002. I have a Sim named after him.

I only posted about 200 times between '02-'06-- so I don't really count as a hardcore vet. And I'm also not sure whether or not I should be honored about that Sim. He'd better be the coolest one you have!

It happens every year and on many forums (like AltF4 said).

The majority of people who join this site for the first time are generally young (early teens), and thus more prone to making annoying, pointless or stupid posts. With the release of Brawl, even more of these kinds of people joined. The hostile response is not to their join date, per se, but to the type of behavior that most (but certainly not all) new members bring.

As a result, people tend to associate that kind of behavior with "new members", ie those with more recent join dates. And that is how joinism is born.


Oh and I'd like to take this time to coin a new term:

joinism-discrimination against a member based on join date

I've never been hated because of my join date, but hating some one because of there join date is really stupid. I know that some 08er's can be really spammy and because of them all 08er's are looked at the same way as the others and aren't taken seriously. I just try not to act out or say stupid things so people can take me seriously.

This being because a majority of the 07's joined Melee that year and found what they though to be their perfect gateway into competitive gaming and Brawl ruined that for them. I'm one of the anomalies that had already been in the community before joining and ergo don't feel that need. But yeah Mic they have reason because they community was so great and it's like getting a taste of something delicious and then it's taken away.

People just get kind of sick of 08 people coming in saying things like: "Stop using glitches"! "Tiers don't exist!" "(character) is really good! They just don't see it yet cuz they're all ignorant fools!" etc. So they tend to associate 08's who say something they don't agree with to these sorts of people. I suppose it's only natural to be tired of hearing people post the same nonsense over and over again. We are only human after all.

Well, I think it's because a lot of people start out spammy and immature, but most will get better over time. Everyone says stupid things at some point, and that's usually when they're beginners. Of course, that leads to prejudice against ALL new members, which isn't good.

Makes sense, and that is true. But a lot 07s are on Melee's side and most 08s are on Brawl's side.

This happens on every forum that shows post count and join date. I was posting on GT forums after I recently joined and just because I was Level 1 [why does a forum have levels anyway?], joined in July/Aug 08 and didn't have that much post count some guy said that I shouldn't be allowed to post.

There's no way to escape it except by posting often and sensibly [but without sucking up].

To be honest with you, whether you're sensible enough you still get harassed on this board. It's just less likely if you think out your posts and actually bother to type your words in full. On big boards like these where it's impossible to count every member active, less much monitor them, you'll find all sorts of stupidity and senseless hatred.

And if you think that it only happens to spammers then you're mistaken. There are also quite a few elitists and arrogant people out there too. No matter what you're going to put up with some form of bulls*** or another and in those cases you could either a.) be the bigger man/woman/creature of higher intelligence, b.) give in to the idiocy and flame back or, c.) summon Exodia to win the argument instantly.

Though you'll see plenty of mutual hatred on here, it's better to come for the conversations that are actually worth while and the people that are also. 1 out of 1000 isn't so bad, right? So that's like a hundred friends right there...
