Not all of us care so much about how good the character is.

Some characters I still find fun to play as regardless of their tier spot, like Mewtwo.
Exactly, like me maining Zelda.

I'm pretty sure if you devote yourself to a character, I.E. me & Zelda, Gimpyfish & Bowser, you can kickass like us pros.

Heres how my system work.

I play all characters several times.

I choose who I can play best with.

That's who I main.

Then there's my 2nd main, which is my favorite char, regardless if I suck with him/her.

So basically, I use my 2nd main first(favorite char), then if I lose, I just tell them Im going to use my real character next, who will be my main.

I'm playing the characters I said i'm going to play because i enjoyed them in the previous games.Fox and peach were my favorites on melee and kirby was my favorite on 64.According to gimpy's thread,Peach and fox haven't changed alot.Kirby seems to have gotten better from some video's we've seen but I have to wait and find out.

well, it wouldn't hurt to try someone new, even if they are you're "favorite" from previous games. who knows, the playing style of someone else might make you a pro legend

I'm going to use Ike a lot. People are clamoring about how terrible he is, will it stop me from getting good with him? I say nay ;p.

My main is going to be the character with the playstyle that suits my tastes the best, regardless if whether it's my favorite character or not or even if it's a character I ****ing hate.

My favorite characters will most likely be my secondary mains and the characters I'll be using in multiplayer more often than not. That is, unless if I REALLY hate their playing styles, and, if that were the case, I just won't be using them that often. :(

like for all you know wario could end up being a ****ty character, and if you care at all about like playing well, you'd be a fool not to switch characters.
Meh, screw that idea.

On the other hand, if you mean your favorite character is suited best for a PLAYSTYLE that you hate, then I wonder about that. I'm largely hit and run, so Sonic works out for me, on the other hand I worry that Ike is too slow to be the new Roy.

I know who my mains will be, because I like those characters. Sonic, Luigi and Diddy. Sonic is my favourite videogame character of all time, so there's no way I won't play as him. Even if he sucks (but it doesn't look he does anyway) I'll use him.

At least I'd use those characters in friendlies, if they really do suck for competitive smash, I'll try to main someone else for tournies or important competitive battles >I LIKE or fits my wanted style< that's better.

I used Donkey Kong and Luigi more than any other character in Melee and smash 64, there's no way I won't use them anymore... even if I only play against computers or my little brother or just for fun with friends... but I don't think that the characters will be THAT bad anyway and that Sakurai tries to balance them as much as possible.

There was a guy, can't remember his name, who absolutely DEMOLISHED with Mewtwo in Melee, go the the Melee boards, I'm sure you'll find him.

Any character can become good, they're all just played differently. Most of the advanced techniques for Melee were advantageous for the faster characters, but plenty of exploits existed that made my SHFFLing Link a force to be reckoned with. Creativity is lavishly rewarded in Smash.

Like most people said I base my mains on characters/franchises I like. If they suck or whatever I don't care. I just get over it and use them because i'm a fan. I rather play as someone I like then someone who is "top tier" that I hate.

To be quite honest, I really could care less whether the character is a great and strong or powerful character or what have you. I choose to main a character that I think is appealing and that catches MY attention. Not what the rest of the world deems "good" or "well-balanced" or "top tier." In fact I hate people who choose to main certain characters just because they're strong or easy to use, just because they know they can always win with them if they get good.

I've always been a huge Kirby fan and mained him in both Smash 64 and Melee and plan to main him again in Brawl. I mained ICs in Melee as well and I plan on making them another one of my main characters. And out of the newcomers, I'm most interested in Pit so I plan to make him my third main.

Why should it matter whether the character is "good" by your standards or not? If you know how to use the character then "good" by your standards goes out the window when you play someone who can actually control the character.

one of the reasons they keep changing the game is to keep it balanced. so right now, in the eyes of nintendo, each character is more or less the same. therefore u can develop ur own strategies to get good with any character.

Hell, I wanted to main Kirby in 64, and Melee before both games released. I enjoyed it both times. Even though Kirby couldn't **** anymore, I enjoyed him because it's Kirby. I guess that's what make crappy characters useable. Otherwise you'd live up to casual Smash fan's assumptions.

Exactly. I consider myself to be a master of DK in Melee, and it's basically because I played as him since the game first came out. That's 6 years of DK mainage, and that devotion allowed me to rip up tournies with a crappy character that just so happened to be my favorite.

What's great (and Gimpy probably had this in his favor) is that when you main crappy characters, nobody knows how to fight them. I love making them freak out a little bit. "What?! Somebody's good with DK?? No way!"

LOL, they never expect the tilt.

There's people who mains characters because of their tiers, some other that mains someone because of playstyle, and other that simply mains a char because they really like him/her. So, obviously, people that say they know which character they are going to main, it's because that they like them, and no matter if the character sucks, they'll play with them. I know that if Geno manages to get into the game, I'll main him even if he ends up to suck. And people will refuse to play with some characters that they just dislike, as I did with Mewtwo and Shiek (Zelda I could stand her) in Melee, and will with Wario in brawl (even if he ends up being very good).

People can also say that they'll main someone because of playstyle, mostly if it's a veteran. I played Peach in Melee, and since she wasn't really changed in Brawl much, I know that her playstyle will still suit me. Even E4All can give us basics impressions on each character's playstyle, so newcomers can suit someone's style as well.

Finally, those that main someone because of how well they fare in the game, or tiers, will pretty much need to wait for brawl and experience with the characters a bit, and wait a bit for the game to evolve before choosing who to main. I had no interest in Marth whatsoever, but I started playing him when I learned about tiers in Melee, and he's now one of the characters I use.

Well from what I have seen so far my favorites one are Sonic, Fox and Bowser, I'll probably main those just because I like the characters, still I'm not sure if I'll change when I start to check how the others work.

EVERY TIME a new fighting game comes out i am always like "Oh ima be that character" but what i really mean is "oh that character looks cool and could be good" in this case its metaknight, but of course i cant actualy know who im going to main untill i have all the characters unlocked and have played as everyone. I like to be the characters that i like, i dont like to be that characters that i'm good with but don't really like, so since i havent played as meta knight, i like him and can only assume that i'm good with him. theres a difference between liking a character as a character, and liking a character for their move set, and since the game isnt out you can only like characters as characters, i hope that all made sense.

I don't know, I see what you're saying but a lot of people have their favorite characters that they just know they will play as. I used Pikachu in SSB because I was into pokemon and liked him. When Melee released I tried playing him but the felt different than what I was used to.

Before the release though I had seen the ICs and wanted to "get good" with them. After playing through the many modes of smash I moved onto Peach and then Marth. Eventually I ended up with Link. I got so used to playing just him that playing as someone else feels weird now. I'm so used to him that he doesn't even feel slow although he is compared to other characters.

With Brawl I still want to play as Link but Sonic and Pokemon Trainer look like a lot of fun. Some people may already know who they will main but I like to just experiment with characters until I find someone who fits me.

In conclusion, Squirtle is top tier.

no...thats the whole point of super smash bros. you use any character you want/like, regardless if they suck. i use sheik and link...why? link is my favorite video game character, and sheik is just **** good to play as and she/he was awesome in ocarina of time.

pit and metaknight look very cool for brawl so i think ill try to use them. if they suck, so what? ill still continue to use them, whats the big deal. we're supposed to have fun here!!!! its a game after all!

Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, and Zelda are my mains. Ganondorf will be included once he's de-cloned. I'm also going to try and main PT, but it might not work out for me. I use who I like, and who works well for me.

Because not everyone needs to play with only top tier characters.

I've been saying I'll main Pit since December 2001, when I first predicted him to be in the next Smash. I might even use DDD as my second, because he's just cool. Of course Ganondorf might be totaly awesome with a sword and new moveset, Geno might be in, Sheik might return.

All of those character would be my main because I like them, not because I've concluded that they are the best. As of right now, I'll be maining Pit just because I like him.

some of you guys are really not listening.

who cares about "tiers" tiers aren't the point. its about your play style. for example, in Melee my best character is Roy. Roy is easily one of the worst characters on the game, but I chose him simply because he suits my style of playing and i do well with him. when I first got melee, i had no idea who roy was, and i still have yet to play a single Fire Emblem game, i dont play him because I like him as a character, i play him because i do good with him and have fun with him. and I definitely didn't play him because of some tier list. In fact, i switched from marth TO roy.

so stop referring to the tiers plz k thx

another example: although roy is my best character, captain falcon is my favorite character. I LOVE his moves and his combos are exhilarating to pull off. Again, I wasn't even aware the the drivers on F.Zero HAD names as i was just a casual fan of the series. I had no reason to play Captain Falcon in the beginning, i didn't know anything about him. but trying him out, I found out that he is my favorite character to play. With some of your mindsets, you'd miss out on a lot of potential. fun.

I dont believe anyone who says they don't care whether they do good or not, that's complete horse****. you wouldn't play a game a lot of you didn't want to be good at it.

as i said before you might TRY a character because you think he's cool, or because of past experiences. For example, when i first played melee, i originally played with Ness, because Earthbound is one of my favorite games. But he turned out to be hard for me to do good with so I dropped him. eventually i played 64 (i played melee a little bit before i first picked up the original ssb), and picked ness up in that, noticing that he was easier to win with. This, in turn, influenced me to attempt to pick Ness back up in Melee, and again I found his updated mechanics unsuitable.

Gimpyfish will probably main bowser in brawl, but not because he loves Bowser. That may be why he TRIED him out to begin with. but HE'S PLAYED THE GAME. and he has confirmed that Bowser is a good character. If Bowser were nerfed beyond all comprhension to the point of being unusable, i Highly doubt gimpyfish would continue to main him.

Also, this game will NOT be balanced. It is fundamentally impossible to make a "balanced" fighting game, unless every character has the exact same attributes and moves.

anyway, this thread has become somewhat of an outlet for noobs to make dumb criticisms of competetive players, and thats not really where i intended it to go...

Yeah, but I really am maining Pikachu because he'll always be my favorite character. It's...something I don't think you'd understand apparently. Also, Pikachu seems to have recieved a few buffs, so that's pretty nifty I guess. I might pick up someone new if I find out I like the way they play in Brawl, but I will find a way to use Pikachu more often than not.

its strange to me to see people like 'dude i'm maining wario'.

like for all you know wario could end up being a ****ty character, and if you care at all about like playing well, you'd be a fool not to switch characters.

it seems like you'd wait until the game came out to see which character felt the best to you. I mean sure if you love wario, you might PICK him first, just see what he's like, but it seems too early to be picking a definite main

like my roomates like "i definitely will never play with Diddy Kong" i'm like wtf, you have no idea how Diddy Kong is, he could be a very fun character.

iono maybe its just me
Or maybe some people aren't so concerned with winning that they will just play who they like. Thats what Gimpy and other bowser users have done. And there are plenty of them who are good. And hopefully Sakurai put focus on balance, so that we can choose whoever we want. Thats how smash should be.

You guys are missing the point. :(

What if you like Diddy Kong but simply hate how he plays? It COULD happen. This isn't all the "tourney***s" telling you what to do. Seesh.
simple, then we are wrong when we said we would main diddy.
saying who you are going to main is not a legally binding statement that if you do not do it you will go to jail, it's saying that you plan to give him a serious try.

i will main kirby.
that doesn't mean if they have changed his move set to be exactly the same as pichu, that i will still main him.
it means that given the info i have on kirby, i would like to use him often.

just because something could happen, doesn't mean we need to add contingency clauses every time we tell some stranger on the other side of the world what out intentions is. it's just stupid.

----
example sentence.
----
i will main kirby, if he is bad i will sub main him, and if his moves are changed such that i no longer like playing as him, then i will only play with him on occasions when i do it for the love of the character, if he is so top tier and brawl is unbalanced such that he is unfair to play with, then i will only use him to muck around with on computers, if the character is canceled before the game is released, then i will not main him, if my wifes great-grandpa's sons uncle's 13th cousin once removed is forced to live with us, and will only chose kirby, then i will not main kirby to be nice to him.
---
or you could say
---
i will main kirby.

which one is better? the one that could be wrong, or the one that is under 4 lines?

Realistically, some characters are going to be better than others. And the better characters tend to be more fun to play, because playing with bad characters is kind of frustrating. Silver777 is right, people tend to play the characters they enjoy playing. Those just happen to be the better characters.
