I agree (with the subject). *edit* I just noticed that the topic has meandered so far from the original, lol.

When the first Smash came out, I used Fox as one of my main characters. So when Melee came out I naturally wanted to play as Fox.

After playing with him a few times I realized Fox played differently to my taste. In the end it was enough for him not to match my fighting style and then experiement with other characters.

Now my main character for Melee is Marth. Perhaps Ike will be similar? Who knows, I could be completely wrong. We just have to wait and see.

I don't know, for me personally, I always stuck with who I liked. Imained Marth, becaus ehis black costume = win, and I just like him in general. Sheik was my fav character from Zelda. Yes I realize my two mains happened to be higher tier character. I also played Link and Ganondorf sometimes, because I like Zelda games.

I was able to stick with character I liked by prefernce to the characters themselves, not by how good they were for 6 years, I don't see why I can pick a character now and stick with them for Brawl.

I come from the land of the ice and snow..
I haven't read the whole thread, so sorry if this has been discussed.

I was never personally one to care about how a character played before using him extensively in Smash. For the longest time, I happily used Mewtwo, Captain Falcon, and Ganondorf in Melee. Then I found out about Smashboards, and as it turns out, two of those three "sucked". It didn't impact me in the least though, since I actually liked them as characters.

The problem with this post is that you assume that people use characters because of how good they are, or that a character "sucking" will stop somebody from using him based solely on that reason. I agree that some people think that way.

However, I had been hoping for Wario forever, and I know -for a fact- that I will play as him a lot when the game came out. Same goes for Pokemon Trainer, who I hadn't been hoping for since I didn't think he was likely. The only character that can be confirmed right now that would make me play as them more than those two(and mind you, I have seen every character suggestion from Ridley to Captain N on these boards) is Isaac, whose chances are decent.

So, you see, I can safely say I will main Wario and Pokemon Trainer when Brawl comes out, because I love the character(not the moveset).

See I think differently...Sure, I like playing as my favorite character, but I also like to feel comfortable about the one I pick. The technique I've used the past two games is that I play through classic mode with every single character, and which ever one I feel the best with I make my main. It has nothing to do with tiers or who's the best player, I basically just pick the one who's moves I like and who controls easily.

I plan on playing as the character I like the most, reguardless if he sucks or not.
He pretty much summed it up for almost every poster in this thread. With that being said, I'm gonna try out (and most likely main) Diddy (due to his overall monkey badassness), along with my older mains Mario and Samus.

some of you guys are really not listening.

who cares about "tiers" tiers aren't the point. its about your play style. for example, in Melee my best character is Roy. Roy is easily one of the worst characters on the game, but I chose him simply because he suits my style of playing and i do well with him. when I first got melee, i had no idea who roy was, and i still have yet to play a single Fire Emblem game, i dont play him because I like him as a character, i play him because i do good with him and have fun with him. and I definitely didn't play him because of some tier list. In fact, i switched from marth TO roy.

so stop referring to the tiers plz k thx

another example: although roy is my best character, captain falcon is my favorite character. I LOVE his moves and his combos are exhilarating to pull off. Again, I wasn't even aware the the drivers on F.Zero HAD names as i was just a casual fan of the series. I had no reason to play Captain Falcon in the beginning, i didn't know anything about him. but trying him out, I found out that he is my favorite character to play. With some of your mindsets, you'd miss out on a lot of potential. fun.

I dont believe anyone who says they don't care whether they do good or not, that's complete horse****. you wouldn't play a game a lot of you didn't want to be good at it.

as i said before you might TRY a character because you think he's cool, or because of past experiences. For example, when i first played melee, i originally played with Ness, because Earthbound is one of my favorite games. But he turned out to be hard for me to do good with so I dropped him. eventually i played 64 (i played melee a little bit before i first picked up the original ssb), and picked ness up in that, noticing that he was easier to win with. This, in turn, influenced me to attempt to pick Ness back up in Melee, and again I found his updated mechanics unsuitable.

Gimpyfish will probably main bowser in brawl, but not because he loves Bowser. That may be why he TRIED him out to begin with. but HE'S PLAYED THE GAME. and he has confirmed that Bowser is a good character. If Bowser were nerfed beyond all comprhension to the point of being unusable, i Highly doubt gimpyfish would continue to main him.

Also, this game will NOT be balanced. It is fundamentally impossible to make a "balanced" fighting game, unless every character has the exact same attributes and moves.

anyway, this thread has become somewhat of an outlet for noobs to make dumb criticisms of competetive players, and thats not really where i intended it to go...
I'm sure we all understand what you're saying but you also don't seem to be listening to us.

Yes, play style has a lot to do with it but in the end, it really doesn't MATTER to most people because we choose who to main based on who we LIKE best and who is our favorite character. Believe it or not, you CAN practice with a character until you become great with them. Sure there are always limits to every character (which is where the tier thing comes in) but we would rather choose a character based on our love for that character or series than for how high on the tier they are or whether or not the character is not good by some other peoples' standards.

So far, it's way to early to say that ANYONE sucks or that anyone is going to be top tier. Nobody has played the game long enough to know that. But it's not too early to say who we plan on spending a lot of time and work at to get better with. We're all going to start out sucking with all of the characters anyway. It's not like we're going to transition from Melee to Brawl in a flash so why not devote some of that time to honing your skills with the character that you love and WANT to main?

If you based who I'm supposed to choose to main off of MY play style, then you would constantly be choosing people like Shiek, Fox, Falco, Sonic, etc, because I tend to use lots of dodging and evasive tactics before coming back and striking hard. Those aren't the kinds of characters I pick though. I never liked Fox or Falco in Smash. Shiek was nice but she wasn't really my thing. And so far, (as much as I love sonic) Sonic in smash looks to be annoying to me. I always choose characters that appeal to me (Kirby, Ice Climbers, soon to be Pit, Dedede). Those all (excepting Pit probably. who knows about dedede yet) happen to be pretty slow characters compared to what I should be choosing if I chose according to my "play style."

Playing the game like that may be alright for you, but for lots of people, we just want to have fun with the characters that we know we love. It doesn't matter what our play style is. You can always master any character with time and patience.

its strange to me to see people like 'dude i'm maining wario'.

like for all you know wario could end up being a ****ty character, and if you care at all about like playing well, you'd be a fool not to switch characters.

it seems like you'd wait until the game came out to see which character felt the best to you. I mean sure if you love wario, you might PICK him first, just see what he's like, but it seems too early to be picking a definite main

like my roomates like "i definitely will never play with Diddy Kong" i'm like wtf, you have no idea how Diddy Kong is, he could be a very fun character.

iono maybe its just me
The answer for me is simple, i will main samus, this is because i already main samus, and even if samus is low tier, i love samus, and will play her. As for new characters, if you like a character, just in gerneral, if they are good or not you should play them, obviously unless you wouldnt use a character you have no exp with in a tourney, just because you like them.

My point if you like a character, use them, so if people like a certain character they will use them regardless.

Im still planning to main Yoshi like in Melee, but who knows what will happen...

One thing I do find funny is that thousands jump ship and main someone else when they are revealed...

"WOMG Im maining Ike!"

*weeks pass*

"OMG Pokemon Trainer's my new main!'

*months pass*

"Sonic OMG OMG hes definitely my main now!"

Because our options open up for more choices. If Geno is revealed, I'm definately maining him. When they update Ganondorf with his new TP look, moveset, badass sword, and (maybe) hovering/floating ability, I might make him my 2nd.

Kirby was my main in 64, Melee, and will be for Brawl no matter what a petty tier list says because I like him. Look at Gimpyfish, the most well known Bowser player on these forums. He chose Bowser because he liked him not because his tier status. Where is he now? Most likely beating the crap out of Fox.

@theONEjanitor: did you ever have the chance to play Mike G? Apparently, before Melee came out, he saw the screenshots on smashboards and said he was going to main Peach. He's the fuxin inventor of that character, lol.

That, combined with the fact that some people just like a character so much, show that people are able to know what character they're going to main before the game comes out, and even still be successful.

Smash isn't just about skill, you know. It's about, say, Snake vs. Pikachu and over a hundred combinations with these matchups. Bowser sucked miserable anus in Melee, but I love playing as him since he's Bowser (and I'm pretty good with him). Sonic looks like he's gonna be incredibly weak, but he's one of my favorite gaming icons, so I'll play as him. My point is, Smash Bros. was made to have your favorite Nintendo characters beat each other up, and we've kinda gone off from that direction, some of us at least. But it's still alive, to be honest.

I don't really have one character I want to "main", persay. I am more just drawn to characters because I think they are most appealing to me. I'll agree with you that it is far to early to decide mains, we should play the characters before deciding that. For instance, I am very interested in King Dedede because he seems to have an interesting moveset. Without seeing how he actually plays there is just too little information to decide that I'm going to main him. Just my opinion. :p

I completely understand what and where you're comging from when saying that.

But there are some people who are exceptions to that. Such as myself, I main Link and always have. Even in Smash 64. Why? My love of the Zelda series keeps me bound to maining Link as if my soul depends on it. So when I say "I'm going to main Link," I can say it with certainty.

it doesn't really matter if their ****ty, if you like a player your going to use him no matter what. You don't have to play a high tier guy just to be good

Please don't mention tiers. There is a difference between a character sucking and not being fun to play. For instance, bowser sucks, but he can be fun to play because hes got a lot of tricks. Roy isn't as bad as bowser, but I have less fun playing as him because hes like marth, only worse in every way, which is somewhat frustrating.

There's nothing wrong with knowing who your gonna main. 'Speci'ly after playing Melee, you sort of have an idea. And since the attacks have been revamped, it's like an extra added bonus! 'Ere's to pulling all nighters ( knowing you have to go to work the next day ) :ness: !

As soon as I saw that vid of a Pichu beating a decently respected Marth (so I was told anyways; don't remember the guys' names but some of you probably know who I'm talking about)...let's just say I've stopped second-guessing myself for staying loyal to Luigi and Pikachu <_>
