Sounds like a vent, probably is, but I've had this on my mind for a while now. Communities of games tend to be so... picky and dense half the time. Let me set up a few examples:

Final Fantasy:

Everything after X gets more trash than praise. XI excluded, let us look at XII and XIII. XII had way more positives then flaws, but I've read and heard more of the flaws than positives. XIII tends to be worse. Not saying XIII is gold, but it has some good points, and all I read (not here, but other places) is negative reviews and bad comments here and there.

Sonic:

I'm not real avid Sonic fan, but I bought Colors last year. I loved it, and beat it thoroughly. I did reading just to find out people found things to complain about it, even though compared to 06 it was a gem. Also, Episode 4 fits in with this as well. A solid game bashed way more than praised.

Now I'm not saying EVERY community is like this. Street Fighter hasn't been too bad (I've heard >insert this< is better, but that's not really what I'm getting at), and there are good communities I'm sure. But even Smash can do it, because Brawl is a casual game, doesn't mean it's fail. (But I'm not arguing over that, lol)

Anyways, I just don't get where we've found ourselves to be. Is it either (A) We have nostalgia goggles glued to our retinas, or (B) They just suck now. I look back and think, maybe it could be both, but I feel like it's more of A.

Don't get me wrong, FF1~10 > 13 for sure, but if 13 came out before 7 (gameplay and all), would I be saying it backwards? See, I can't answer that, which really makes me think it's A...

One thing I've learned over the years is that a good 75% of the people you meet on the internet are either idiots or self-important *******s who treat other people like trash because they hide behind anonymity.

Anyway, I think that nostalgia has a big effect on how people see things. For instance, if you grew up on the N64 you might find it to be a bundle of pure joy while someone else who didn't might see it as an outdated fossil.

I think my biggest problem regarding this that most nostalgic die-hards are so busy clinging to their SNES and insisting that the 90s were the golden age of gaming to the point where they won't accept anything new because they like that blanket of familiarly too much. And honestly, it's kind of annoying when people go on about how if you dare enjoy playing your PS360 then you're a *** who doesn't know what "real gaming" is.

Yeah, the WoW community was once good.

Now the large majority of it sucks.

I actually think it's the internet in general affecting the communities surrounding games. Not just because of the anonimity, but also the culture surrounding the internet is spreading to certain game communities.
WoW is filled with those cancerous little preteens that spout memes because they're so randum xD. The community is filled with terribad players that, upon a minor scolding pointing out their flaws, just vomit "umadbro"s and "no ur bad"s.
In this way, I wish Know Your Meme had never existed. Internet memes are exactly like diseases, however cancer isn't contagious, really.

For the record, I'm not targeting Kupo15 at all, but yes.

It just gets really annoying, because new games are quite hard and not so bad. Getting 100% on XIII isn't near as impossible as IX, but it's still kinda hard. 100% on Dragon Age is pretty hard, too. SSFIV is impossible (because I suck), and so on.

In regards to Sonic specifically, some of us can remember when Sonic wasn't only good, it was GREAT. The criticism thrown at Sonic now is entirely deserved, because none of the new games can hold a candle to Sonic 1-3, Knuckles and Sonic CD.

And Sonic 4 Episode 1? That's just a really blatant and insulting way to milk fans for a 2-D product.

^ I'm not saying it's the best thing ever, but the latest ones definitely are a step in a better direction. If you get criticized for doing something wrong, with little to no praise at the improvements, it doesn't help things. Sonic CD was one of my...still is one of my favorite games ever, but I'm not going to hate on Colors because it isn't as good, is what I mean.

Bottom line is, "It's getting better" mentality > "It still sucks" I guess.

I think the thing is with the... interesting... fanbase Sonic has there will always be more complaints than praise. Trust me, just go find any random Sonic forum and just get ready to be blown away but the Sonic fanbase.

Plus at this point Sonic is so far down hill it's easier to be all pessimistic and hateful then it is to hope he will be as good as he was in the Genesis days. Although I do agree that Sonic Colors is pretty damn good.

This all stemmed from the hate of FFXIII on gamespot/gamefaqs. Really annoying, tbh. I went into 13 expecting it to suck, because everyone said it did, and was thoroughly surprised.

So, you liked a game most seem to dislike, and you're mad at them for not liking it for the reasons you did, or at least giving it credit for the reasons you did...?

Here's a thought, if there's no reason to care, DON'T CARE.

^ Apathy is nice, but it's not like this keeps me awake at night. I just don't get what happened to make things so twisted. I don't remember communities always being so negative, lol. That's all I mean really.

Nostalgia is stupid, people just do and say ******** stuff about it.

Even though Sonic games went downhill, but I heard that Colors was actually pretty good.

Final Fantasy:

Because it is trash. I couldn't even take the series seriously after FF X-2 =/

Brawl is a good game, but it is a fail fighter. People shouldnt say "Brawl sucks" because it doesn't. There's lots of content, nostalgia and value. However it's not a fighter and that aspect sucks. As for Sonic i agree that community is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too fussy. People *****in about Sonic's eye color in Sonic 4... some kind of joke? Then they bawlin about the physics because he stops if you n-jump. THEN JUST HOLD THE DANG D-PAD FORWARD, PROBLEM SOLVED. Oh some people even *****ed about homing attack. I bet if sega excluded it they would of *****ed about the game not having anything new.

only thing that pissed me off about sonic 4 was the name. It isn't Sonic 4. 4 implies a sequal, and it was purely a homage.

The physics are the only legitimate complaint about Sonic 4.

Anything else is simply dumb.

Also, XII is actually a great game and is way better than X-2, XIII, and XIV.
It also has a large amount of side quests(Mark Hunting is fun) and is more freeform than most of the other fantasies.

The license board is annoying, but they did revamp it in a re-release..... that is Japan Only. :(

I don't understand why Square wanted to experiment with XIII when they already did with XII. :/

I miss the mark hunting already.

I'll leave you with this.
Lengthy, but it does give insight on why the Sonic base is like how it is now.

This. I'm actually rather fond of FFXII, and sure most of the cast isn't that well characterized and the story isn't anything special but it was fun, had great dungeons and great combat. Sure, the license board sucked but whatever.

And for everyone complaining about FFXII's poorly developed cast, well, it's not like FF ever had characters that were that well developed in the first place.

What happens is, everyone complained XII was too much exploring and had poor character development. So XIII has lots of development and no exploring. It's their fault for going too far on the other extreme, but then again there was nothing but negativity on some boards when 12 was released. (Though I liked it)

Where people get NOTHING.
I never had a sega cd growing up. My first console was a Genesis with Sonic 3.

Having played all the genesis Sonic titles through childhood..I played Sonic CD on the Game Cube a few months back and I really don't see how superbly amazing it is. =/

Yes it has teh awesomenesses of animated cutscenes and Metal Sonic. But the level design was..um cooky to say the least. It's pretty hard to keep momentum it's not a traditional Soinc game in any case. It was almost like a metroid lite on crack lol going all around and back and forth in time to get a perfect future for each zone.

Maybe the quirkyness is its appeal to some people.

Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 and Knuckles was, is, and always will be my favorite and my opinion the best Sonic game created to date.

Sonic 4 my only gripe is they didn't spend enough time making the physics work right and it's too short! lol I really enjoyed that game..and well for continuity's sake..I would have liked the younger shorter Sonic for that game but that's irrelvent really.

Too get back on the main topic..yes communities suck ***..or get ***** if you're from here lol

i donno about games being magical while being young. I found majoras mask and ocarina of time to be the most magical game and i had a sega genesis, gameboy and playstation before that. Oblivon for 360 is pretty magical too when its not stuck in load times ><
