Sorry If there's already a thread like this, I searched and didn't find one.

Anyway I'll tell you what my favorite is by showing which systems have the most games in my favorites.

Atari 2600: 4
NES: 14
Sega Master System: 1 (Virtual Console)
SNES: 21
NEO GEO: 5
Nintendo 64: 12
PS1: 17
GameCube: 8
Xbox: 8
PS2: 26
PS3: 2 (Don't own played at friends)
Xbox 360: 13 (Don't own played at friends)
Wii: 9
GameBoy: 7
GameBoy Color: 3
GameBoy Advance: 10
PSP: 6
DS: 35

Yes, my favorite is the DS. I love point and click adventures which the DS is great for. Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk, and Trace Memory are my favorites.

when you've got these, you need no other point-and-clickers, especially not TSUNDERE or KAWAII ones

(uninvited falls short of the others so don't mind that, whatever)

If you count the PC as a console then that clearly gets the vote.

If you don't count PC, I believe it's un-debatable that the SNES is the winner. There just simply isn't another console that has that many great games and a variety of great games from all the different concepts and genres the system carried. From Smash TV to Ogrebattle to Starfox, there is always a great game to choose and play for whatever you want on the SNES and I can't stress that enough (really though I just said the same thing twice).

If you guys like I can name all my favorites from the SNES, it may take a while. Lets just say my list starts off with CONTRA motha fukkin THREE.

Well the best overall is probably SNES but for me, it's the N64. I have a lot of memories with the games on it.

The SNES and the PSX had a great number of old school JRPGs, so I'd call those a close 1-2 for my favorites. In more recent times, the PS2 and the DS have both been extremely satisfying as far as my tastes go, so those're both way up there.

I would have to agree with this list. HOWEVER, and I'm going against popular belief here, but, in my honest opinion, if we were to list the top 10 console games in each generation, I think that EVERY generation (Minus the current HD era) would see a Nintendo console filling up most of the spots. Heck, I think that 6 of the top 10 console games from the 128-bit era are GCN games. And I think that 5-6 of the top 10 console games from the 32/64-bit era belong to the N64.

Just my opinion.

I can't choose between the SNES, PS1, and PS2.

They have a really great library of games and a lot of classics as well.

My first system was the NES by the way.

The SNES, hands down. Such a plethora of awesome games and all of them were in spifftastically awesome 2D. Well, except for a few semi-3D ones like F-Zero and Star Fox. In any case, it was an awesome console with awesome games.

Plus, it had Super Metroid, which makes it win in and of itself. :p

Oh boy! Another console fanboy thread!
Lol, oh well. I guess everytime you have a thread about video games you're bound to get into debates about which is better.

Of course I'm a huge Nintendo fan, but I'm not going to go around saying the other systems are horrible. I respect them all, and think they all have their strengths and weaknesses, even Nintendo systems have their pros and cons. But I still think that Nintendo has made some of the best games to date.

Wait, godsmith, I just realized...your answer defies the title. You said which CONSOLE had the best games, but you said the DS won...? The DS isn't a console.

I'm sure you didn't mean for that to happen, you just misworded it, I just wanted to point it out.

I'd say SNES then DS comes 2nd.

Z:lttP (best 2-D zelda game), SMW (best mario game), Super Metroid (best metroid game)
just some games I had for my SNES.

*goes to dig up his SNES*

I definitely see what you're saying and I guess I should take time to list out my favorite games of the contested areas to determine which is truly best.

8-bit and 16-bit eras aren't worth menioning, Nintendo wins by a huge margin in both those areas lol.

32/64-BIT ERA TOP 10
1. Zelda: OoT - N64
2. SSB - N64
3. FFIX - PS1
4. MGS - PS1
6. Super Mario 64 - N64
5. FFVII - PS1
7. Pokemon Stadium 1 - N64
8. Kirby 64 - N64
9. FF: Tactics - PS1
10. Goldeneye - N64

N64 - 6, 3 in top 5
PS1 - 4, 2 in top 5

128-BIT ERA
1. Zelda: TP - GCN
2. MGS3 - PS2 & Xbox
3. Resident Evil 4 - GCN & PS2
4. FFX - PS2
5. SSBM - GCN
6. Zelda: WW - GCN
7. MGS2 - PS2 & Xbox
8. Soul Calibur II - All
9. FFXII - PS2
10. Okami - PS2

PS2 - 8, 3 in top 5
GCN - 6, 3 in top 5
Xbox - 3 2, 1 0 in top 5

Hmm, I guess now that I look at it more, my previous list was more influenced by how the consoles did overall rather than how much I personally liked it. Maybe looking back on them analytically has influenced my nostalgia for them, or vice versa.

Oh well, my list is still more or less accurate.

The reason I think GCN still has the top 5 games during that generation?

SSBM, LoZ: WW, LoZ: TP, Metroid Prime, Tales of Symphonia, Resident Evil 4. And I think Metroid Prime 2 fits in nicely in the top 20.

If virtual console counts, then Wii wins, becuase it has the epic games from some of the other consoles combined.

If not, then I vote SNES, with N64 in a close second.

The PC actually is the best "console" because you can download basically almost every game out there.

Sorry Gates, but the xbox has zero in the top 5; MGS3 was never on the xbox. MGS2 was, 3 wasn't.

By generation I'd say NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, Xbox360. The NES and SNES seem obvious choices, I wasn't ever terribly enamoured with the N64 (though it did have some good 3d platformers) and the ps2 only lacked a good FPS, it had something for everyone otherwise.

As for the current gen, the Wii's struggling to find it's feet game wise, and the 360 has the better exclusive titles between it and the ps3. I guess LBP strives to change that, and I'm excited about Resistance, but there are so few solid playstation only titles these days; everything's cross platform.

If I had to pick any one system I'd say the PS2.

No. They're not even remakes, they're just re-released. Plus, the Wii is still missing a lot of great games from Virtual Console.

Illegally. If you're not up for illegally downloading games, it's not as good. Even if you copy the games you own by yourself making it legal and you have every game in existence, it's still better on the original console (at least in my opinion).

Plus, same thing as the Virtual Console. They are originally on whatever console.

For that matter, you could technically modify any game console to be able to play games from all consoles. Which would in turn mean every console can be the best, which would then mean that nothing is the best, thus rendering the topic useless.
So for the purposes of this conversation, you should address it in regards not to the handheld/console itself, but the games belonging to it. Otherwise, the topic is kind of pointless.

Lol. People love technicalities. Last I checked, the best selling system ever was the GBC. No surprise. My pick for the best system is the Sega Genesis. Sonic, Street Fighter, Streets of Rage, all classics. Why do all of those begin with S? The Genesis is win.

Time for a History lesson:

3rd gen:
Top: NES
Bottom: N/A
Handheld: Also N/A
Nintendo was the only Video game maker on the block at this time

4th Gen:
Top: Genesis
Bottom:3D0
Handheld: Gameboy
Other:SNES

Sega decided that it wasn't fair for Nintendo to be alone, so they stepped up to the plate, even outselling the SNES by ratios around 6 to 4. The 3D0 was the first 3D0 Gaming console, but with prices at $700. Nobody was buying it. The Gameboy was also released, along with Tetris.

5th gen:
top: PlayStation
Bottom: Sega saturn
Handheld: GB color
Other: N64
Nintendo originally was working on a deal with sony, but had some problems with the contract, so they skipped it. Sony, in anger, made their own console, outright crushing Sega and threatening Nintendo. The gameboy color, made sure that Nintendo didn't lose it's status as well.

6th gen:
Top:pS2
Bottom: Gamecube
Handheld: GBA
Other: Xbox
Sony was bragging about how they predicted the PS2 will outsell PCs in sales. Guess who was afraid of this? Microsoft of course! They made their own console, and while it did beat the Gamecube, it failed to beat the PS2. Nintendo, for another generation, was holding on to it's hand console.

7th gen (current):
Top:Wii
Bottom: PS3
Handheld top: DS
Handheld bottom: PSP
Other: Xbox 360
Sony, pinning Nintendo down, now threatens to destroy it with it's own handheld console, the PSP. Nintendo clearly can't keep up with Sony on the Power department, so they have to go a different path in order to stay alive, sideways. Instead of going for graphics and power, Nintendo went for innovation, with the DS, outright beating the PSP in sales. With the Xbox360 out, Nintendo and Sony also had to release their systems, and Nintendo went for innovation as well with the Revolution. It (for some weird reason) was renamed the Wii. Nintendo was going for the crowd that had trouble with the typical control scheme, and it worked. Sony, on the other hand, went too far with the PS3 and failed to keep it's lead this generation. Not only that, they outright lost it to the company they are trying to destroy! The 360, look up Ring of Death.

I think the Super Nintendo Entertainment System get's my vote. I loved a lot of the games on there, and so much good games. It's very close behind Playstation 1 (Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, etc.)
