tbh it always depends on the situation but tl;dr if you can, avoid the punish/bad situation.

Hey guys. :p

I'm wondering, what is the generally agreed upon best version of Toon Link? Did he have anything notable in previous versions (i.e. like Charizard's 2.5 infinite glide) that has since been taken out? I'm making a custom version of P:M with the best versions of all characters in it. Thanks again!

3.0 toonlink is easily his best version. In terms of design AND how good he is.

Wasn't AGT nerfed from one version of him to another?

Other than that, yes. 3.0 T. Link is easily the best version of him.

in 2.6, hitting the bomb with up b was harder due to the % up b gave out, you'd hit the bomb away a lot. in 3.0 I believe this was made easier.

How many Spin Attacks can you do before TLink's Spin2Win stales too much to not be able to do a bomb jump?

I had originally thought that TLink could infinitely bomb jump because TLink's Spin2Win was a lot more powerful than Link's but I was messing around with TLink's bomb jump timing and the bomb started bouncing off.

after a while it stales but its still technically possible to do infinitely. Whenever it stales, the timing just becomes harder iirc, still possible.

Your Toon Link seems solid, I think the most important thing for you right now is fighting a few bad habits. That will bring you far. For example:
- Stop throwing out too many hard reads like f-smash
- Keep a bit more space when using projectiles
- Practice movement a bit, your approaches are too straightforward
- Instead of trying prophylactic attacks, shielding an approach fares well sometimes because TL has great OoS
- You seem to string combos into up-b /up-air too early if they don't kill yet. One more fair/bair inbetween would often have been great (also after any kinds of throws)

@Lunchables
What do you think of grounded up-b on shield. You can mix up the charge time and the multihit will catch too late punish attempts.
Also do you use grounded up-b ledgecancel (when facing the other direction) -> jump -> aerial or something? It covers quite many options surprisingly
AGT down + bomb down -> up-b (instant explosion) ->continue recovery, if you are at high enough %s the bomb will pop you up high enough for more recovery and the opponent is threatening to hit you out of standard recoveries.
Also you know the spindrop, it is actually possible to land onstage with it and just have one little up-b hitbox out (not really important but wanted to post it here)

@ Chesstiger2612 Chesstiger2612 your advice helped i also didnt know about the agt down +bomb dowwn+ into up for recovery. Also the point of the up airs is to juggle because most of the cast(not sure if everyone) can't handle or do anything about it or they all try to challenge it which isnt the best idea. Also what did you mean by my approcahes(spelled that wrong)
Thanks

Up-air juggling is kind of hard because the move has such a long animation (except if you land, during platform techchases etc.). Fair/Bair and sometime even nair are often the better options.

Fadeaway nair on shield seems solid, is hard though because you need to hold away on the last jumpsquat frame, reset to neutral to nair and keep holding away afterwards. It would be easier with any other aerial because c-stick

Okay, thanks I would always get shined when I would tether, in all your matches you would seem to drop the tether and go into a upB which I cant do, is there a guide on that. @Lunchables

I want to get back into Toon Link, but I have to re-learn AGT using a different shield button because I took the hard press out of my L :urg: (PMBR light press air-dodge pls).

So I'm about to start watching a ton of Lunchables matches. I have much to learn.

btw the match up there vs. UTDZac is kind of garb. First tourney using 3.0 toonlink so I just spam spot dodge for 2 games LOL.
I'd recommend watching anything besides that, also

Hey Lunchables, you posted back in like January or February that you were working on a Toon Link guide. Did anything ever become of that, or is it scrapped?

Oh also I think I mentioned I was going to make a toonlink guide a during early 3.0. Well, obviously I never ended up finishing... I recorded a bit of footage but then got lazy. Now that I have dolphin and a very huge amount of knowledge on my character compared to the past, I will try to not be lazy and make a video like I said I would.
Yeah I never ended up getting around to it. I want to but I just don't know where to start. I've been getting REALLY bored over this summer though so eventually I'll make it... eventually?

Not enough general discussion.

Guys we need to convince PMBR to get rid of T.Link's side taunt and replace it with him taking a selfie with his pictobox.

Toonlinks side taunt is his best one because its his only one that he can taunt cancel.

What we SHOULD do is give toonlink a taunt where he holds out the gossip stone and talks to the King of Red Lions, and if you hold the taunt button, he'll continue holding out the stone. (This would also include the "Hey!" Sound effect :D)

http://smashboards.com/threads/toonlink-hitbox-frame-data-thread.361606/ Oh and also I'm working on this.

That would be fine too.

But selfies. With him making random faces.

The best.

Taunt cancelable or not, I don't care for the side taunt, and I've heard rumors of taunt cancelling possibly not making it into the next build so if that's true anyway...

Def just found my favorite T Link movement option. You can short hop -> bomb throw -> waveland. I'ts like Wolf's lazer -> waveland and feels soo crispy and aggressive. Just thought I'd throw that out here.

I'm gonna put this out here to try and save my own sanity. I understand that the tether part of grab won't connect when your opponent is in the air. However, I have found that sometimes I can grab just as the opponent is hitting the ground off of some other attack (let's say a nair for illustrative purposes). So I nair, he gets hit and flies off some distance and sometimes my grab connects just as he's hitting the ground.

BUT sometimes this doesn't work, he'll hit the ground, then maybe bounce once and my tether will go right through.

My question: Am I just getting lucky on the times when it hits? Hitting some magical frame? Or is there a recognizable pattern that I should looking for?

I sort of get the feeling that I'm not understanding a more fundamental mechanic here, whether it be knockback or hitstun. If that's the case, a knowledge drop would be absolutely awesome.

OK let me try:
There are three hitboxes on Toon Links grab. One at the chain (ground only), an inner one at the tip (aerial and ground), an outer one at the tip (ground only).
What do you mean by hitting the ground off? The missed-tech animation? Only can give details if I know which animation you mean.
In general, what is relevant is only if the character is grounded/not, if his hurtbox connects with your hitbox or not and if he is intangible/invincible/or not.
I'll try to look for the grounded criteria, sometimes they are obvious, sometimes not.
As first assumption it might be that you are talking about the missed tech animation and you get the inner grabbox also catching aerial opponents when he is at the highest point of his bounce while he is too low otherwise.

Would that make sense or not in your example?

when I said "hitting the ground off of some other attack" I meant he is in hit stun. Just that he is hitting the ground after being hit by one of my attacks.

In the scenarios I'm thinking of, I'm catching them at the end of the chain, not near my body at all. I don't know if that's what you mean by "inner hitbox". Honestly I had no idea there were that many hitboxes. How do you find this stuff out?

But yeah, maybe all my scenarios involve the missed tech animation. Is it possible to grab them out of a tech animation? I imagine it would have to be a tech in place if it were possible.

I understand that my description has some ambiguity. I would provide a video but the fact that I can't accurately predict when I'm going to hit the grab kind of makes the video a daunting endeavor.

I don't have a graphical hitbox program, but think of it this way (sry for my bad paint skills):
Well, you can grab them out of missed tech animation, it is best if they are at the highest point. For the tech animation they are intangible on the timing where you would be grabbing normally so you need to react quickly. Both the missed tech and the tech animation are 26 frames long, but the tech animation is only grabbable on frames 21-26 and the depeding on the character the best frame to grab non-techers is somehow around 10.
I would try to react to their tech choice but if you did some kind of tech trap (hitting them when they prepared for teching) you can basically be sure they don't have the tech window available in which case you can just throw out thr grab at the right timing.
