I can't even begin to think about where to start here. Surely, I would have Mega Man, Zero, Tron Bonne, Dr. Wily, Sigma, Vile, Bass, Roll, Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, M. Bison, Dhalsim, Phoenix Wright, Jill Valentine, and Leon Kennedy in my roster. But I can't really say who else I would add since the Mega Man, Street Fighter, and Resident Evil games are the only Capcom games I have ever played.

I'm just going to put a roster together and see how it turns out.

I might have missed some key characters, but I'll put my reasoning in spoiler tags.

-Ryu: ...do I need to explain why I'm including him?
-Chun-Li: the first lady of fighting games; she seems like a no-brainer.
-Akuma: much like Ryu and another character on this list, his presence seems almost obligatory for Capcom crossovers.
-M. Bison: the main villain of the Street Fighter series
-Juri: I didn't want to focus exclusively on Street Fighter 2, and while I'm not certain, she seems popular.
-Dudley: given its popularity, I felt like someone from Street Fighter 3 should be included; Dudley seems very different in demeanour, both from the rest of the Street Fighter cast and everyone else on this roster, and while I'm not sure who the most popular SF3 veteran is/was, I found him to be fun to play as.

-Mega Man: again, it seems kind of obvious.
-Zero: out of the Mega Man X cast, he seems like the most popular.
-Sigma: while I haven't played Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, I liked his inclusion in that game, and I feel like Mega Man could use at least one villain.
-Tron Bonne: she's popular enough to get her own spin-off, and given that it's been fairly ignored by Capcom, I feel like Legends should at least be referenced here.

-Morrigan Aensland: when it comes to Capcom, she's the crossover queen.
-Felicia: when Morrigan's included in a game, she's usually not far behind.
-Jedah: while I could go with Demitri, Jedah seems like the more interesting choice, though I'm not super familiar with Darkstalkers.

-Mike Haggar: I couldn't not include him. He's the mayor of Earth!
-Hugo: probably the most visually striking enemy in the Final Fight roster, and he's really came into his own as a character thanks to Street Fighter.

-Akira: while I know nothing about Rival Schools, if she's good enough for Street Fighter, she's good enough for this.
-Captain Commando: his name can be shortened as CapCom - how can I not include him? (plus, his beat-em-up game was fun)

-Viewtiful Joe: I really got into Viewtiful Joe when it first came out, and he'd be a fun inclusion. Shame that he didn't make it into MvC Infinite.
-Alastor: I was torn between Alastor, Silvia, or Captain Blue for a second Viewtiful Joe character, but Alastor was my favourite before I even knew that he was a walking Devil May Cry reference, so you can call this one personal bias.

-Amaterasu: after playing through Okami, I felt like they could have done so much more with her moves in Marvel vs. Capcom.

-Dante: I don't know what to say here; Dante has so many moveset options for a fighting game that I've written what's technically four separate Smash movesets for him and I barely scratched the surface.
-Vergil: sure, I could save him for the special edition, but I see no reason to exclude him beyond continuing that running gag.
-Lady: I could have included Trish, but I felt like Lady would have a more interesting playstyle thanks to her more varied arsenal.
-Nero: his moveset was so fun in Devil May Cry 4 that, by the time I got to play as Dante, I missed being able to pull enemies in and slam them to the ground. DMC5 expanded on his moveset even further, and while four Devil May Cry characters might be pushing it, I feel like they all bring plenty to the table.

-Strider: while I think he's a manga character (I'm not sure how his ownership works), he's included in a bunch of different Marvel vs. Capcom games. I haven't played much of Strider (a bit of the Genesis version, but that's it), but he's got a great design, and his moveset in UMvC3 was fun.

-Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Wesker: I'm not sure if I need to explain these three. While I haven't played much of Resident Evil (mostly 4 and 5), they're arguably the faces of the series.
-Nemesis: when it comes to monsters in Resident Evil, Nemesis is easily the most noteworthy.

-Phoenix Wright: while his moves felt awkward and clunky in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, he's a popular character, and I think they could make him work.
-Monster Hunter: I'm not very familiar with Monster Hunter (which seems to be a running theme with this list - clearly, I should play more Capcom games), since I've only played a bit of Tri. Still, the series is huge, and it has to have something on here.
-Gene: a relatively obscure pick (how many people remember God Hand?), but as a beat-em-up, it seems like a natural fit.
-Frank West: he's covered wars, ya know? Maybe Chuck Greene from Dead Rising 2 would have been the better choice, but Frank's the one that everyone remembers.

-Sir Arthur: while I'm not a fan of difficult games like Ghosts 'N' Goblins, they definitely have a strong fanbase.
-Firebrand: it may be a random enemy, but it's popular enough to get its own spin-off and a spot in Marvel vs. Capcom.

-Nathan Spencer: I've only played a bit of Bionic Commando, but it was fun, and Spencer's grappling mechanic (while maybe a bit too similar to what Nero has) gives him an interesting moveset.
-Edward Falcon: it seems like people really want Power Stone to make a comeback, at least from what I've seen.
-Asura: Asura's Wrath is so over-the-top and ridiculous that I'm surprised that it hasn't made it into any Capcom fighting games yet.

-Zack and Wiki, Tessa: admittedly, in these cases, I wanted to go with some lesser-known bits from Capcom's history.

It wound up being forty characters, which feels like a lot. Even then, I probably could have added more, but I felt like forty was pushing it. If there's one thing that making this list has taught me, it's that I should play more Capcom games. I get that something like Rival Schools or Power Stone isn't readily available, and the difficulty puts me off of games like Ghosts 'N' Goblins, but I have Strider, Monster Hunter Tri, and God Hand, and I haven't really dug into them. I've got a lot on my plate as of now, but when I get the chance, I'll have to change that.

I tried to avoid copying too much from Marvel vs. Capcom in terms of roster selection, but it seemed unavoidable since that's the big Capcom crossover fighting game.

I like it! I only wish more people would consider putting Chuck alongside Frank as well. We've seen in Case West that the two can co-exist.

How about a Capcom fighting game featuring exclusively characters Capcom have made games about but don't own?

Heihachi
Toon Link
Shantae
Professor Layton
Harvey Birdman
Jotaro
Scrooge McDuck
Darkwing Duck
Goofy and Max
Aladdin
Xenomorph
Papa Smurf
Mr. Bill
Little Nemo
Spider-Man
Wolverine
The Noid
California Raisins

Now THAT'S a roster!
The matchup everyone's been waiting for!

Well, for a thread bump, I can't think about an amount of characters for a roster, but I did write up special moves/Final Smashes for a huge library of Capcom's franchises on my wikia sandbox, even looking up obscure games/series such as Pirate Ship Higemaru, Section Z, Hyper Dyne: Side Arms and Battle Circuit.
