What kind of Smasher personality would you hold more respect towards?

Please give your honest opinion.

Let's say for example you get consistently beaten by someone in smash who is obviously better than you. Which kind of personality do you prefer that person to have?

Let's say there are two types of people. Person A is simply talented at the game and doesn't need to practice in order to win. Then there is person B who practices day and night in order to win their fight.

Both types have their pros and cons but it's tough to decide which one should be given more respect.

Basically, what kind of personality do you think a pro smasher have?

Pro Smashers practice a lot. You can be naturally good at something, but that isn't going to win you any tournies. You'll be stale without playing against multiple people, and you can't naturally be good at the techs without practicing them.

It took effort not to snark this topic.

I'm not much of a Smasher, but I do know that in music and band in particular, there is always somebody who is at the top, but doesn't care and doesn't ever practice. I'd much rather see somebody better than me that practices and cares more, but usually those above me are those with natural talent.

as long as the person doesn't seem arrogant after they cream you.

I've always been pretty casual and just kind of picked up on a lot of techniques pretty easily, so I would probably be more of an A. And I don't really have much respect for somebody who is too much of a B, simply because I can't respect a person who devotes as much time as some Bs do to simply getting better at a video game.

I practice a lot when I'm not on the forums. Plus, I'm not that lazy I won't practice for an hour or two.

I think I would respect an intelligence or kind hearted smasher the most who has a competitive edge and helps out and points out flaws and tries to help you.
That's it.

yeah this is so true of band. i make a lot of people think that i'm just naturally good and don't care... instead, i AM naturally good at my instrument, but i still care very much and do practice as long as it takes for me to get something down (true, i DON'T have to practice near as much as other people in order to get something, but i really do care a lot more than i let on)

and duh, i prefer pros that practiced a lot...but not to the point of bitterness. i hate bitter or unsociable pros, regardless of practice... but i like anyone who WILL practice a lot, regardless of if they're good or not. respect is not really about ability so much as it is about trying and not being a jerk.

I admire people who have the dedication to practice so much at this game. Person A types will most likely get bored of the game, assume it's way too easy, not take it seriously, be all, "lol let's play Halo it takes skill."

I could be wrong, though.

Originally, I was the former, but that was only due to the fact that I did not have a gamecube and was not desperate enough for it. Currently, I'm the latter due to the fact that I'm playing people nearly twice my skill level in almost all aspects. People I have have faced within the past few months that you might know were Zhu, SS, Falcomist, etc. Although it was one day, I would say thanks to them I am B. It really depends though.

Essentially, I've had this conversation too many times to continue any sort of argument.

I'd have to say i would rather loose to person B. If i get beat i want to know that they had to work hard in order to win. Not someone who can just stroll in and win whenever they want.

I would chose person B who also won't rub it in your Face.

Only time i would Rub it in some one's face would be a Smash Virgin who keeps saying you can't beat them, and are better than you because they play DoA or Mortal Kombat.

B.s are better.

As many of the people in here have already stated, A.s would be asshats as soon as they win a match. I know its not that simple, but this isn't really a broad topic.

We can throw around tons of ideas detailing how we think people should act, but the reality of it is that we don't have the right to tell people what to do. Even talking about it feels wrong.

Yah. Just because somebody is good at a game even though they don't waste all of their spare time practising it, they're automatically going to be an *** just because they beat you. Yup, you have every single B described perfectly, because they're all the same, and it's imposible to be good at a game without either spending too much time playing it or by being a jerk. Makes sense.

i dont know. i mean person b makes more sense, but as long as person b practices and doesnt look like a complete nerd or actually has a life then ill respect him. person a is just unfair.

From personal experience i have a friend who is good at everything, hes straight A's, was top of our class, and all without trying. SO i figure there is something i can be better than him at, smash, but we play and hes better than me and all my friends. He never practiced or learned any techs and yet he was still able to beat us. This was when i was first getting into melee. It just made me mad that even though i begun learning ATs he could still beat me like nothing. But the moment i feel i can beat him and have learned enough, i found out he had already "retired from smash". But honestly, i always shake my opponents hand, but i respect the person who worked hard to get where they are. I applaud people for being that good naturally, but its nothing big, i think its better for someone to work their way up from being a bad player to being a good player
