Marth players tend to pick up Fox as a secondary because Marth/Fox is a fantastic combination. That, and **** Sheik.

I think a lot of Marth players switch from Marth to Fox because of the styles that each respective character has. Some Marth players like to be aggro, but cant figure out how to do, so spacies are the best options. If they pick Fox up as a secondary, its for the MU's.
But thats my personal opinion(This is the exact reason why I went from Marth to Fox)

Right now, I play a little of Marth, fox, falco and falcon.
My main is probably marth, but I just don't like his style anymore.

Whenever I play against someone that's even a little better than me, it feels like I just get completely shut down.
Playing marth, I'm either ****** someone, or getting *****. There is no middle ground.

I'm going to commit to this game harder and learn the fundamentals of the game that i never got to learn in preparation for SMYM. So if you have any tips for practicing, that would be great.

I am not a patient person. Although I'm learning to be more patient, it is not in my nature. I would like to play one of the characters I listed because I do not want to relearn a whole new char. Fox - I like his ability to pressure with nair shine and shine to grab, and I feel like no matter what happens, he always has options. Falco I really like because i'm good at wave shining with him, but I feel stuck under pressure. Falcon I really like, but against spacies, I will have no options except to wait for them to **** up.

So I'm not patient, I like automatic things... meaning if i do the tech skill required, I will get the results I want. which char to i commit to and practice?
Sorry if this post is bad to read. I'm really ****ing tired right now.
you should play mario. if you are as impatient as you say, mario's poor approaching + your natural aggression will actively force you to be more accurate, precise, or smarter with what you do, but mario is also not so bad that you will get ***** once you put some time into the character and he is naturally resistant to a surprising amount of strategies.

after you play mario for 6 months you can go to a better character. if you can wiggle out of sticky situations well, go to fox. if you play him solidly without chaingrabs, you can go to falco and if you play him solidly with chaingrabs, you can go to sheik or doc. if you like playing him shifty with chaingrabs you can go to ice climbers if you like not being susceptible to extensive combos, you can go peach or jigglypuff. if you just want to hurt things, you can go to falcon. if none of these applies to you, you can just go back to marth and you'll at least appreciate how good his range is.

regardless of how you play, you should figure out what you excel at as a player, and you should be able to diversify and improve your skill set. you can pick the correct character later. the character you play is much less important than your ability as a player, so focus on that first.

Out of the characters that are generally considered tournament viable (Fox through Samus) there are enough differing playstyles that one of them should make a natural fit for you. Patience is something you will have to learn to an extent, but if it's something that isn't natural to you, you should stick with offensive characters. That leaves you with Fox, Falco, Falcon, and to an extent Sheik (she's patient and then punishes mistakes hard). Then you need to decide the amount of mental effort you want to put in during matches. Falco takes the most mental effort, followed by Fox, then Falcon, and then Sheik. Then decide how much practice you want to put in. Fox/Falco are tied imo, followed by Falcon and Sheik. I would suggest starting with Falcon as he is the easiest to learn with your patience level and is a great character to learn the game with.

wow thanks for all the responses guys.
It's a really weird feeling when you watch videos of all these great people and then you see them post in your thread. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside =)

Anyways, these past 2-3 days, I've been practicing fox/falco and a little falcon trying to get a feel for them.
Falcon is by far the character i am most comfortable with because the degree of difficulty (like how well i can control him) FOR ME is lower than the spacies. I can combo with him pretty well and the L-cancels on his moves are easy for me to hit.
S2J: whenever I see a top fox play a top falcon, the falcon is shielding 90% of the time and just waits to get some distance from fox in order to approach. then when falcon lets go of the shield he eats a nair from fox. Idk, maybe there was a few matches that I saw that made me feel this way, probably isn't always like this though. I just don't want to pick up a Char that has a lower cap than others.

Idk why, but fox "feels" much easier to control than falco. The timing for fox is to press everything as fast as possible. But for falco, I always try to wavedash too quick and waveshine too quickly and it takes too much mental energy to focus on that. I'm sure it'll be no problem with more practice tho. Right now, I feel more at home with fox for sure. Also, I don't understand the usage of lasers very well. I play against people (while i'm marth) that can shoot a laser at me outside my grab/Fair Oos range and by the time the laser stun ends, they are already grabbing me or shield pressuring me. This type of spacing is outside of my reality.

Anyways, I'll record a match with all 4 characters I somewhat know how to play and see what you guys think =) Heads up though: quality will be **** since i'll record from my macbook.

Mainly i want to get ready for SMYM and at least make bracket =)

wow very detailed.
thank you, but i honestly don't want to play mario lol.

about what i excel at... nothing really comes to mind except for maybe spacing with my dash dance. But one thing that I am really BAD at is what to do in situations. I pick unsafe options while unaware of them and I don't know the fundamentals of fighting games very well (i started out with FPS games). I feel like I need a character that can just randomly "get into" my opponent, and have cookie cutter combos and finishers. I know at a higher level this is impossible because players will have ways to get out of stuff, but I think by that time i will understand the game more.

Based on this Fox/Falcon would work best for you imo. They have cookie cutter combos, can be played very aggressively, have tried and true finishers, and don't require the mental energy falco does. Falcon will be easier to become a mid level player with, but has some bad matchups. Fox will be much harder to get proficient with, but does well against the whole cast and will get you further faster. Both are excellent 2v2 characters too if that's a concern at all.

Ballin just play marth. If you get bored switch to falco.

If you lose and it isn't based on you messing up then you obviously got opened up. If you mess up your tech your either out of practice or having an off day. Just Learn how to control your character well to where its subconcious to you and concentrate on your opponents strategies, if they have one.

Focus on learning individual matchups with those chars and you'll see results
