Using the word Owned

Although I "Own" people often in video games and other competitive activities

I feel that the word "Own" should not be used other than what it actually means,

people using it in a context of gaming or other competitive activity do not actually "Own" their opponent and should use a more accurate term like "defeated"

The term "Own" when referring to another person is a negative hateful term which reminds us of the terrible days of slavery,

I propose that using this word too casually could possibly cause a re-emergence of the slave trade

...... which would be bad.

anyone else think of negative terms that we should eliminate from our vocabulary?

In the title of the thread, you wrote "word". Imagine how mute people feel whenever they hear that used so casually.

It must feel very bad... shame on you jugfingers.

The word "Owned" potentially ressurect slavery. I'm all for tact but seriously that really is ridiculous. When we use Own in context of, utterly defeating an opponent, we all are fully aware that it does not literally mean we consider the opponent as Property. It's just like using the term "****" in the same context for humorous reasons. Although if it was "****" that you have an issue with I would find that understandable since those who were a victim of the crime actually are traumatized by it and sets them off in a way like the infamous N-word offends an old fashioned, sensitive angry black guy. Ack went on a meaningless tangent there. Anyway, if you get offended about "owning" or getting "owned", I will have to say that you're over reacting. With all due respect of course.

*sigh* This is preposterous to say the least. A needless voracious display. Seriously...being obsequious isn't going to get you anywhere.

Using "owned" isn't anymore offensive than saying, You got "wrecked" "destroyed" "beat" "whooped" or anything else of the like.

What I can see people getting offended over: "Gay" (which I personally care less about) "****" (which I can understand) "Pissed on" "Getting off" and anything similar to that which might give the wrong impression to those not in the gaming community. Some might just be downright offensive to people.

Then you have random sayings that are funny ways of going about something:
"Broken", "Free", "Pringles" "R. Kelly'd" "Ace'd" and some other phrases that have become rampant in the fighting game community.

Also as someone who prefers to be tactful, and who is black...I could care less if someone used the "n-word" so long as I knew no ill intent was meant by it. I personally don't like the word, but w/e. If someone was hype and was like "yo this n**** is handling business!!" I'm pretty sure I don't need to take offense to it. It's really obvious to see when a person is serious about it. (no matter what race. It's happened already...didn't bother with it. I laughed, actually)

This is truly a thread that...probably shouldn't exist. At least not for the word "owned". I'm all for tact...heck I don't even curse. However...this is just outrageous. I wouldn't be surprised if a Mod closed this. I would be if the discussion went any further.

Oh well, cya on the boards =p.

I doubt the parents of the young kids that come to this site will care if they start using words such as owned.

However, they wouldn't want their kids to be exposed to words such as ****, gay, and n***a at such young impressionable ages, it desensitises them to such thinga.

This.

Parents won't think much of "Owned".

Seriously...have you heard some of these kids on CoD? Actually any FPS.
They got a mouth on them that you wouldn't believe.

See, I don't like the use of the word owned, but not for the reason the original poster laid out. No, what I hate is when people use it when you outdo someone in everyday situations. In my opinion, it should pertain to Video Games only.

Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. Just because I wanted people to THINK before they speak, doesn't mean other active members should be posting obvious spam and trolling.

no one thinks before they speak. It is kinda on a buffering system. Sometimes you can be aware of it--to me it feels like an echo. >.>

But!! We can change that system, and thus eradicate certain words from our own private...vernacular.
