As far as gas money is concerned, I calculated that total cost for gas for the trip there and back will probably be a bit more than $55. So, I would ask that everybody pitch in $10.

Yes, Hylian came to one meeting with the old smash club, back when I still played Brawl, haha.
He ***** my TL with his Falco, and narrowly beat me in a Wolf ditto. If only he came to another meeting sooner, I'd be more enthused about facing him again (in Brawl). I also remember him doing random against a bunch of other players. There was this one fat dude who played a pretty decent Marth, Hylian randomed against him and got Mario, and just barely lost. The fat dude was hyperventilating, lulz.

Since there is demand for a Brawl singles tournament, we will hold one this Saturday, April 3rd at 5pm. The entry fee will be $5 and payouts will be 60/30/10% (possibly after a 10% house cut). We're starting to put out flyers now so hopefully the turnout will be good (above 15). We can hold some side events after the tourney and friendlies throughout the meeting. Also, note that there will be a $1 venue fee charged at the door.

Clay and I agreed that set-ups permitting, there should be one that's Brawl +/- only, now that the final version of B+ has been released, and a new version of B-.
And it'd be nice to have a side event of some sort involving those games, if enough sign up.

And it's too late to cancel the admission fee, I already put out flyers advertising it. Anyways, I think you're making it a bigger deal than it is. It's just one dollar and will cover the cost of this meeting alone, maybe a little more. Besides, we need funds and there aren't many other options to get them. It's also a matter of holding events legally. We do not want to collect tournament entry fees with the ticketing procedure due to how annoying/convoluted this process is. However, student org policy dictates that we use the ticketing procedure whenever we charge admission to an event. Only using the ticketing procedure to collect a venue fee seems to be a legal solution.

I would also add that it's not obvious that turnout will be low. It is Easter weekend, but it's only a two-day weekend. This is kind of too short for many people to bother going home. And not all of the Austin Brawl community is going to WHOBO, right? Further, I put out flyers today, which is unusually early and could help turnout.

But maybe it will be a small tournament. If so, that does not mean it is all of a sudden unreasonable to ask for a $1 admission fee. The meeting still costs $20 and has to be paid for no matter what the turnout.

I mentioned the fact that we may have a $1 admission fee at this meeting last Monday (see pg. 82 of this thread) so I think people were given fair warning.

I understand the concern that an admission fee may discourage some from coming to the meeting but understand that we need teh funds (our club account currently has effectively -$15 assuming we reimburse Juan in full for all the meetings for which he has provided snacks) and this seems like a simple, fair way to acquire them. What can be more fair than having everybody that uses the room and the snacks to pitch in 1/20th of the cost? Besides, we've stopped collecting the membership fee and removed that from our flyers/email--maybe that was discouraging people from coming to meetings before. I don't mean to sound defensive, I'm just trying to explain why I think it is reasonable and necessary to have a very small venue fee.

The comment was mostly in jest, but since we have a long notice in advance for the April 17th tournament, as well as a thread made for it, shouldn't we do the same for a Brawl tournament in order to be fair?

I'm not making a big deal of it. All I said was that I don't think it's necessary. Some people will view it as unfair. And even if you have already put out flyers, replacing those flyers isn't exactly taxing our limited resources.

It's going to be much more troublesome enforcing a $1 venue fee and looking like a **** asking people to leave who don't have $1 or who don't want to pay. With an advance notice, this wouldn't be an issue (if we advertised a tourney in May, people would have more than enough time to get their **** together, and the event could be much better organized).

The turnout will most likely be low. At least, in comparison to an event we hosted in May, where we advertised more than a week in advance. And the cost of the meeting does not need to be paid for at this meeting. We'll have other meetings. A real, legitimate Brawl tournament, that the Austin scene will show up to, would be better for them and for us.

The main concern isn't even that some people will be discouraged from coming. That is an issue, but the main issue is that we could simply have the event in May, with good advertisement, with several more (hopefully 30+) people showing up. This weekend, being easter weekend, with there being a separate Brawl tournament that most of Austin will be attending, there isn't much point in having a tournament where we charge everyone a venue fee. A tournament in May simply makes more sense.
