'Aite. Question time.

For those whose most wanted character (or one of your most wanted characters depending on how realistic your requests are) is in the game as a spirit, do you use their spirit often? Do you like its effects? And are you happy with its ranking (like I'm sure Geno was given a 4 star legend status as a kind of acknowledgement of his popularity)?

Personally I'm happy with the Skull Kid/Majora's Mask spirit. Getting the legend status is nice and the secondary effect (lifesteal) is really useful. I ended up using him for a lot of World of Light and now have him equipped on many Spirits battles unless they're difficult enough to require a specific setup.

How's about you?
I use the Isaac spirit decently often, I actually used him for the Final Boss, though I'm not sure if his ability actually helped at all (it depends on what the game considers "Energy Shots").

Yeah, I use the Shantae spirit regularly enough. And, yeah, I'd say the Ace ranking does make the most sense for her. :)

So, assuming Smash is now 20, what was everyone's first experience with series?

I remember Melee being played at my cousins' house, but I was pretty young then, so I don't think I played it that much

Then, fast forward to some time in either 2008 or 2009, we're at our cousins' house once again. This time, they had Brawl... Being older, and already getting hooked on gaming thanks to the Wii craze at the time (who I'll also thank my cousins for introducing me to), I picked up a controller, and picked :yoshi2:... It was a blast. So much so, that it was basically tradition that whenever we went to their house, one of the first things we did was play a couple rounds of Brawl. My family loved it so much, that we ended up buying our own copy of it, and it was likely our most played Wii game...

So, if it weren't for Brawl, I probably wouldn't be on these boards, or part of other multiple Nintendo fandoms... So I'm gonna take a second to thank Brawl for introducing me to Smash, and a ton of other amazing Nintendo franchises.

I think a video on possible non-fighter pass DLC could be a good idea

Shovel Knight, Specter Knight, Lyon, Wonder-Red and Zoroark are all low-rank Primary Spirits with few slots so it sucks but I still use them.
Nino has a terrible support effect and Hector's is trivialized by the skill tree.

At least Alucard, Chun-Li and Hydreigon are good
I don't think One Piece has gone on this long because of editiorial mandate (although that isn't to say that the publishers don't love how long it's gone on); Toriyama's editor couldn't stop him from ending Dr. Slump or Dragon Ball, and don't think Oda's editor could do the same if he decided he had had enough.

The fanbase has repeatedly made jokes about Oda's complete inability to predict how long the series will go on for, he thought the series would only go on for 5 years, and now look where we are. At one point the Skypeia arc (which started in Chapter 237) was considered (by Oda himself) to be the "halfway point".

Unlike Naruto, One Piece's core design lends itself very well to a long-running series. Naruto has a very small "world", the only things that matter are the things that directly effect Konohagakure, when those things aren't the focus, they might as well not exist, By the end of the series, you could pretty much count the number of countries Naruto (the character) had been to that weren't Konoha on one hand, and even then, we were fully aware of all of the world's biggest players by that point, meaning there wasn't really anywhere for the series to go.

In One Piece, each island the crew goes to is unique, with a culture and flavour to them that Oda takes time to establish (some moreso than others). The world of One Piece is huge compared to Naruto, and things happen even when they don't effect the main cast; not only that, the secondary cast is constantly shifting, and there are characters who come back who, in other series, would be discarded never to return (I won't say who for the people like Zinith who are actively reading it), this even applies to characters outside of the series (the main character of one of Oda's old single chapter pilot manga actually appeared in One Piece).

Speaking of the pilot manga chapters, @Zinith, I recommend looking into Wanted! at some point.
I understand WHY it works so well as a long-running series, the nature of a mysterious treasure means you can push it for as long as needed as its actual place and requirements aren't known.
But I reaply doubt Oda isn't being forced to pad it for this long, authors may not admit but no writer would make something this long if there wasn't corporate intent behind it.

Honestly, more manga should follow the Jojo format. Make a confined story and then go to a new cast of characters. It allows readers to get payoffs to big arcs while making sure the series can go for as long as it's needed without it getting stale, in the sense of character casts, tones and genres.

KH III releases this Friday. If a Direct announcement is made on Wednesday, I'm placing money on Sora being announced as character 2.

There was a problem fetching the tweet
He seems to dislike them and want to punish it by slowing them down in general if they are campy.

I wish he should implement that. Campy players ruin the pace of the game. They can get boring imo.
As the link says, how do you exactly get an AI to know what camping in? Because when you have zoners who can play keepaway such as DHD and Belmont, you could end up making a system that actively punishes a character for playing how they're supposed to. And what about Sonic's old hit and run style? Where they hit you and then run away. Sonic could easily abuse an anti-camp system by going in before the AI detects he's camping

It would have been really funny if they had those anti-camping mechanics introduced in the game when they brought in the most campy characters (the Belmonts).

All I'll say is, if you think you'll enjoy it, disregard the length of the story and just go for it; don't worry about trying to catch up and read it at your own pace.

As someone who has read the story (more than once), I've only very rarely felt the hand of the editor, and the biggest one that comes to mind is a situation that reduced the length of an arc, not lengthened it (Oda introduced a collection of new enemies in the middle of an arc, only to have them all accidentally taken out by one of their allies shortly afterward).

Is it just me or does it look like Shantae's skin is constantly changes shades between gameplay and official artwork?

Shantae vs 2B = Too many cheeks.
You mean something Snake lost the moment he returned to Smash, and Falcon lost his as well, while Samus only got hers nerfed in favor of legs...but Bayonetta got to keep her booty

It would completely ruin the playstyle of zoners like Villager and Isabelle and instantly kill any of their potential viability if you did that.

It wouldn't be a good move.

5 methods of characterization: speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions, and looks

Steve: none, none, none, anything, and crude

There are many characters I don't like that I can see make it in smash, but Steve is in another category entirely. He falls short of my (and it seems, many people's) criteria to be considered a character at all. We struggle to see a Dragon Quest protagonist rise above the level of generic avatar, but even then they all have a thematic look, move-set, and effect on those around them. Some people see the blank slate as creative freedom, but the truth is restrictions are the things that require creative solutions (see: Captain Toad).

I mean, there are characters like Mr. Game and Watch, and imo he's one of the funnest characters to play.

Literally every argument I've seen used against Steve can be used against these characters as well, and yet, here we are.
