I mean, I love me some wordbuilding but when it's been going for this long, it's clear it's padding(not that it's Oda's fault, it's likely an editorial decision and this is what hurt Naruto so much but that already went for far too long and One Piece is much bigger than it).
But when I look at the current anime landscape, I just can't get into such a big series with such a slow pacing and I'd rather get into Black Clover at this point.
I don't think One Piece has gone on this long because of editiorial mandate (although that isn't to say that the publishers
don't love how long it's gone on); Toriyama's editor couldn't stop him from ending Dr. Slump or Dragon Ball, and don't think Oda's editor could do the same if he decided he had had enough.
The fanbase has repeatedly made jokes about Oda's complete inability to predict how long the series will go on for, he thought the series would only go on for 5 years, and now look where we are. At one point the Skypeia arc (which started in Chapter
237) was considered (by Oda himself) to be the "halfway point".
Unlike Naruto, One Piece's core design lends itself very well to a long-running series. Naruto has a very small "world", the only things that matter are the things that directly effect Konohagakure, when those things aren't the focus, they might as well not exist, By the end of the series, you could pretty much count the number of countries Naruto (the character) had been to that weren't Konoha on one hand, and even then, we were fully aware of all of the world's biggest players by that point, meaning there wasn't really anywhere for the series to go.
In One Piece, each island the crew goes to is unique, with a culture and flavour to them that Oda takes time to establish (some moreso than others). The world of One Piece is
huge compared to Naruto, and things happen even when they don't effect the main cast; not only that, the secondary cast is constantly shifting, and there are characters who come back who, in other series, would be discarded never to return (I won't say who for the people like Zinith who are actively reading it), this even applies to characters
outside of the series (the main character of one of Oda's old single chapter pilot manga actually appeared in One Piece).
Speaking of the pilot manga chapters,
Zinith
, I recommend looking into
Wanted! at some point.
