Honestly, for how much focus between Sonic and Elise get, it never was the biggest problem with the latter. The issue with Elise's character is that it's defined by her being a prison for Iblis' power and that point serves exclusively to move the plot forward then the character herself. Eggman wants access to it, so he kidnaps her all the time, Sonic is then forced to protect her because of all that, and the Mephiles wants to release it from her so he makes a plot to trick her into releasing her emotions and thus Iblis, but in terms of herself she doesn't really get anything out of it. She does open up a bit, but they don't really go too far in depth into what it means to hold back your emotions or having to feel the weight of the world on your shoulders when just one tear could release the Apocalypse, she can't move things forward for herself as she's constantly put in a state of distress by Eggman, and the only real major contribution she makes is saving Sonic from death. She functionally exists to just drive the plot forward and she doesn't stand on her own all that well, and for someone who should have a lot more focus considering her situation that hurts her far more then having a one-sided crush with Sonic did.
If anything, cutting down on the number of kidnappings and putting a bit more focus on her inner issues and concerns would've been better for her. That way she would've been more defined as a character rather then a plot driver.
