Slightly Semi Serious thoughts on the moderation though, there have been a couple of times where I got infracted for something I really thought would have been acceptable considering past posts, but that's the problem with having a bunch of moderators each with different ideas of what's infraction worthy all operating at different times. Sometime it's just a toss-up as to whether you'll be warned for something depending on who's looking at the thread at the time, which is a bit unfortunate.

Honestly it's one of the weird things about being a mod. When something gets reported and you're stuck between "well I think it's fine" and "well what would the other mods do?" Moderation has to be consistent or people will challenge everything on the basis of "favoritism".

Being able to separate oneself/knowing when to step up are definitely the hardest aspects of the job. Just because you have a banner doesn't mean you don't have the right to express your opinions or ****post, but at the same time you need to recognize the times when you need to be impartial, when to step aside, and that often times you're setting an example for others to follow.

Consistency is also tricky as there are often times multiple interpretations and solutions. It would be nice if we were a hive-mind, especially when it comes to warnings, but we thankfully aren't. 70% of the talk in the Staff board is regarding this issue.

Communication online is a crap shoot due to the lack of nuance and Moderating is basically an unpaid Customer Service position.

Respectfully disagree TBH.

Background is honestly not distracting to me, I can tune it out pretty easily. I also find the shape of the stage to be what makes it interesting. It'd be nice to see the community break out of its Town and City and Stadium comfort zone.
A lot of the points against it seem over exaggerated to me, but eh, to each their own.

Lol yeah. I was second-in-charge of Smashboards' biggest competitor for a couple years.

Yeah. I have some perspective on the issue due to my past experience in admin positions, which is why I’m speaking out about it. I agree with you.

Also about the too lax thing, I kinda feel like that’s a good way to go mostly. Consistency doesn’t have to be “all eyes on the boards and infract every rule breaker”- that’s impractical. However I think the prioritization should be adjusted as well as communicated properly so that everyone is able to actually know what to expect instead of people being blindsided randomly by an infraction they got for a post they made like 5 hours ago that they thought was fine.

Like for instance, some of the more minor things, I feel like most of the infractions for those are hard to substantially justify. In which case, I would understand infractions those if they actually cause problems but because the current method is preemptive, then that leaves a whole lot of (and too much) wiggle room for individual discretion and punishment for something that probably wouldn’t have happened otherwise. Whereas if it’s a thing that has been reported to have caused a problem either through the report form or as a complaint in the thread, I get handing out an infraction for it.

I think one of the cores of the issue is also the “family-friendly” image that is being advertised in the terms for participating in SWF. I’m sure literally everyone here knows that especially in threads like this that that isn’t the case, so it almost feels like infractions for very minor offenses in the name of preemptive appropriateness is disingenuous.

If it carries on too long in the thread you can always carry it on in a PM, or group PM with those who want to be involved. Discussion is healthy.

To clarify my comment though, because I want to be clearer, I feel like there's a difference between an administrator's role and a moderator's role. I've been both. As an admin, you can afford to be more lax and guide your staff with a gentler hand. How you approach situations or vocalize to your staff how you want to approach situations can change the direction of the site as a whole. As a moderator for a single forum, as I am, you don't have that same liberty. If mods A, B and C would infract for Post X, and mod D wouldn't, then there becomes a potential issue of perceived favoritism or a simple inconsistency that brings into question the legitimacy of the infraction.

Essentially, moderators need to keep up with the stream, admins dictate the stream itself. And I have more experience as an admin than a mod, so shifting my perspective is my goal for the sake of being consistent with everyone else here. If I'm hanging out in the thread and let a post go, then another mod comes in half an hour later, sees the post and infracts, that's where the "blindsided" thing comes from. Consistency is key.

IMO, infractions should be more "last resort" than "go to", but the reality of it is that infractions are designed to essentially do nothing at all unless you are constantly getting them. We didn't have a similar system set up for AllisBrawl. Mods could basically only edit/delete posts and then tell an admin or a super mod to get involved. That was it. Infractions are helpful for keeping track of past behavior and automatically applying temporary bans if the user's been a problem for multiple separate mods. Not using the infraction system as designed kind of defeats the purpose.

Anyway, sorry for the long scatterbrained post that's like half an hour late. Busy day at work today.
