An open letter to the Tournament Organizers of the Smash Community
Dear valued TOs,
You guys work so hard for this community, and none of us can thank you enough. Some of our most valued and iconic moments in the Smash community would never have happened without you guys. You all are the reason the Smash community has lived so long through thick and thin, turning a party game into something more, and even catching the attention of our valued game's developers. Tournament play is the sole reason Smash was able to evolve into something more than just a casual foray into gaming history, and instead into a deep and complex game filled with so many variables and strategies. You could even compare it to chess. Without tournaments, Smash would be nothing. And without tournament organizers, there can be no tournaments.
Sure, you guys have made some shaky decisions over the years. Keeping custom moves legal for so long in Smash 4, not rebanning wobbling in Melee after EVO legalized it for some reason, and not banning Meta Knight in Brawl. However, despite all of this, we have stuck with you. You are the ones who make our communities great, regardless of which game it is. We are very grateful to have you in our community.
However, there is one issue that I cannot excuse.
And that is the decision to legalize Deathbox in the Smash Ultimate stagelist.
1. It's a very boring stage
Deathbox isn't even that interesting. It's a box with lava on all sides. That's it. No platforms, no ledges, there's nothing here except for the lava. This is objectively one of the most disinteresting stages in the entire game.
2. It is a stage which actively encourages degenerate play
Tell me, in Deathbox, what exactly is the "optimal strategy"? I'll tell you: it's to corner camp. Since there's no ledge here, corner camping is a viable strategy, and that makes it very boring. Most games in Deathbox go like this: one player wins neutral once, gets a decent percent lead, and then they just camp in the corner and back throw the opposing player into the lava and watch them bounce all around the stage until they hit them once to send them out the little hole in the top. There's no strategy here, it's mindless. It's brainead play. Tell me, how is this fun to watch? I'll give you an answer: it isnt.
3. It's an unbalanced stage
Deathbox, being such a large stage, inherently gives an advantage to faster characters such as Fox or Sonic and cripples slower characters such as Ganondorf or Incineroar. The moment the faster character wins neutral, it's over. Slower characters cannot camp as easily, and the larger space gives the faster characters more room to run circles around their opponents in that first neutral exchange. It's inherently uneven and unbalanced, and the decision to make it a starter of all things is baffling.
I hope you all have listened to my points carefully. I'm not trying to be pushy about anything, but I just feel like the stage actively harms competitive play and hurts the overall spirit of the game.
I hope you all have an honest, open conversation about banning Deathbox, and an honest, open conversation about not legalizing custom stages anymore.
With regards,
Gayfoshill.
