For those who missed it. Its a randomized game akin to the Hunger Games simulator, but it's marbles going down a track and you can actually see the action instead of it being reported to you. These are the 91 marbles that will be racing. Each person can volunteer themselves and three other Smashboards users.

It doesn't take too long to run because the track is built, but it is a nice change of pace.
Put me under white because no one seems to have taken that yet

Just imagine it spoken out loud. Haha. No! No one talks like that!
I would agree, but this is the same series that had a teacher bring a muppet version of himself to teach. Everyone also agrees that Mr. Ushimaru has a stick up his ass so he could just be a stickler to being very articulate. I've had a Calculus teacher like him, but less abusive. Teachers can be pretty eccentric

Gotta say, even among the funny **** that's going on with the shared stages (although they removed the people ****ing and similar). Im surprised by the amount of Minecraft stages, especially going by the most popular ones.

I love how Yusuke and Morgana's spirit battles are a reference to their voice actors.

How Morgana and Pikachu share the same actress and how Yusuke and Chrom share a Japanese and English VA.

Don't forget how Haru is referenced by :ultvillagerf:, both being cute, axe-swinging girls who might or might not be homicidal.

In general, the Smash fanbase in my humble opinion needs to dial back expectations of a western character or a Microsoft character in general. People everywhere on the internet are banking on it, and almost every time this sort of thing happens it ends in disappointment.

At this point, Steve and Chief are basically out of the running. Banjo is a popular pick among Smash fans, but:

1) His series is dead, and arguably doesn’t have the same legacy as Castlevania or other 3rd parties
2) Similar to Geno, is a popular Smash fanbase pick. Geno is a Mii Fighter costume (most likely)
3) Banjo is western, which we have not gotten yet in Smash. Certainly, Microsoft has had a cooperative relationship with Nintendo recently, but...there are Japanese 3rd parties with similar if not better relationships, and have stellar picks left that reach wider audiences than Banjo.

I would love Banjo. I still think he’s a pipe dream.
How do I respond to this without just saying **** you? I don’t think I know how.... how about this.

1. Banjo might not have a specific legacy. But Rareware does. Especially with Nintendo. They were Nintendo’s biggest supporter during the SNES and N64, and they didn’t jump ship to Sony. The folks at Rare flat out expected Nintendo to buy them, they were that close. (We still don’t know why Nintendo never offered. Would love to ask someone someday). Heck, they trusted Rare with reinventing Donkey Kong! They are an important part of Nintendo’s history. And Banjo is there mascot character. The DKC crew have been separated and co-opted by Nintendo. They don’t represent Rare anymore.
2. That’s true. Geno was a Mii Fighter costume. Likely because Square’s content is so expensive and they have no reason to push Geno. But even if Banjo hasn’t had a new game in a while, they still use him in ALL their marketing. Banjo still shows up in ads, they put the duo in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing (two years AFTER Nuts & Bolts flopped). And Phill Spencer, the head of XBox, outright said he wants Banjo in Smash. That is most likely one of the characters they’ed bring to the negotiation table if talking to Nintendo at all. And if he did well in the ballot, then he was probably on Sakurai’s mind too.
3. We haven’t gotten a western character YET. There’s no rule that says we can’t. Arlo made a video about this, and I highly recommend it. Because at the end of the day, most of our “rules” were made up by us. They have very little concrete statements from the dev team to back them up. We don’t know why a western character made the roster, true. But they do talk to western studios. There’s content from Ubisoft, Wayforward, AND Yacht Club Games already in Smash. Communication between international devs is easier than ever, and translators have existed in the corporate higherarchy for decades.

Basically what I’m saying is. Banjo could happen if they wanted it. And we have every reason to believe that they want it.

Something I don't like about Joker is that Arsene just comes out at will. I'd much rather pull him out by pressing down special again, then having my specials and attacks more powerful. Having it at complete random just makes no sense.

Other than that, he's pretty cool.

I have some counterpoints.
  1. Banjo might be "dead," but we've seen evidence of them constantly being marketed or referenced by Microsoft. I went down to my old Microsoft store last month, and they had a promotional poster using Banjo & Kazooie alongside IPs like Master Chief and Minecraft despite having no new games in a decade. Last year, we've had figurines of Banjo officially released thanks to Microsoft. Phil Spencer's notorious tweet is also something to consider given how he's officially wanted by some Microsoft employees. Banjo might be a dead icon from the 90s with only three main games, but his standing still holds strong.
  2. I would say Geno has nothing on Banjo, as cruel as that sounds. I've already mentioned how Microsoft actually still gives a **** about Banjo, which is massive compared to Square and their care for Geno. I would also mention Banjo's fanbase is one of the most relatively active support groups for a Smash newcomer or just for the series in general over a dead icon. Countless YouTubers remix the series music, fan polls typically rank the duo in the top 10, and Yooka-Laylee--the intended spiritual successor of Banjo--was funded millions above its intended kickstarter goal. You've acknowledged Steve and Chief are out of the running now, so if Banjo was getting in, there's no way he'd be a mii costume because he's all that Microsoft has left.
  3. This is the trickiest point because it really is fair. In Japan, Banjo sold about 400,000 copies in its initial run and Tooie sold half that. However, being western specific really touches little when Erdrick being eastern specific is a widely discussed topic. You say Japanese 3rd parties would be practically more advantageous, but what if there was a long term purpose for Nintendo working with Microsoft? When you have one of the biggest western gaming companies at your door, both sides are going to milk each other. Given how Erdrick is said as a good way to market Dragon Quest over to the west, perhaps Microsoft could use Nintendo and Smash Bros to market its company over to the east. Meanwhile, Nintendo can appease its core fanbase with the old N64 classics or sweet new Microsoft content. And honestly, who knows where this relationship can take us if it works out well? Banjo would be a symbol for this relationship.
The sad thing for me is that I can't see Banjo as a pipe dream anymore, so it will actually be disappointing if he doesn't make it in this time.
These are fair.

My point on the Mii costume wasn’t so much that Banjo would be one, but that Sakurai was aware of the popularity of the character and that’s what he ended up making him. Geno was considered up there with Ridley and K.Rool in terms of something like a “Big 3”, and that Banjo was up there too.

Basically, if a popular pick that isn’t very relevant now (Geno) merely got a Mii Fighter costume, what implications would that have for a similarly popular character (Banjo) from a company that isn’t in at all?

Could happen. But I guess we’ll see.

My god that is lame. None of my teachers were like that.

I kind of want a western dev to make a Persona side story set over in the states now.

Pfft! I wish I had a teacher use a puppet for my high school classes. I mean, have you ever had that high school teacher who would put on some boring and honestly cheesy YouTube video to teach kids concepts? It's like the puppet but without the teacher actually giving a crap.

No. My teachers would put on videos like Crash Course and VSauce. Actual quality YouTube content.

Honestly if she just shared that her game was the best of the three that would've won me over.

Nohr 4 life.

I think the difference lies in that Banjo has a much wider audience. Geno is very much a product of Smash Speculation and Sakurai's statements on the character so much so that finding a person outside the little Smash bubble that knows who Geno is is rather Rare.

That's not exactly true with Banjo-Kazooie. If you grew up with the N64 it's very likely you crossed paths with Banjo. A whole generation, me included, grew up with Banjo and his N64 ganes and is remembered far more often and fondly without the Smash Bubble than Geno. There have always been people clamoring for Banjo in Smash since Melee, can't say the same for Geno who gained relevance around Brawl due to statements from Sakurai. People have been clamoring for a Banjo-Tooie sequel since Rare got bought by Microsoft and they still do even to this day. That's not the Smash Fanbase. That's the Banjo fanbase.

Tl;dr Banjo is popular within and wothout the smash community bubble. Geno, not so much, he's a relic of Smash speculation. Notable that he got a Mii Costume because of it, who's to say Banjo and his considerable popularity can't get more?
