Ooh, here's another one:

snip

(If it wasn't obvious by now, I love this game's soundtrack. Especially the badass boss themes like this one.)
Clock Towers Under the Sea is some of the greatest platforming music ever made. That stuff's Aquatic Ambience tier.

Mafia Town and Subcon Forest are also all amazing.

But Mechawiggler takes place in New Donk City.
Mechawiggler is great, but like, I don't get the feeling that I'm fighting a skyscraper-sized robot from it.

It could fit any boss in Odyssey, actually. It's still a good song though, just not one that fits the situation in specific.

Now, I wanna hear your submissions for some of the worst Mario songs.
Yoshi is a Mario sub-series, so I'll just throw this game to the table.

All of it.

The Ground Theme from New Soup U makes me suicidal.

Sure, the newcomers could be from a currently not represented Nintendo series. But I'll be completely honest. I'm convinced by a number of things, that each fighter pack is going to reflect the same ideas. I'll outline a few reasons.

1) "Joker is emblematic of the approach for DLC"
Joker from Persona 5, a 3rd party title that hasn't even been released on Switch yet, is coming with a brand new stage, music, and potential assist trophy from a series not yet in Smash. There's even a chance for new Spirits, or at least I assume there will be considering the regular spirit updates. So, each fighter pack comes with
  1. fighter
  2. stage
  3. plenty of music
  4. potential assist trophy
  5. potential alternate costumes
  6. potentail spirits
At the very least, I believe this rules out more newcomers from series already in Smash. Could I be wrong? Absolutely. However, with the amount of content in each pack it just seems...counterproductive, I guess? Like, for example, we've already got several Mario stages, Mario music, Mario items...and then another character adds yet another? What stage do they get? What music? What else could they add in a significant amount like Persona 5 without making it seem like overkill?

On the flip side, if you add an entirely new series that would similar as to how "emblematic" Joker Pack 1 is, then you include entirely new content that draws in a wider audience. This leads me to my next point.

2) The investors meeting
During the investors meeting, there was mentioning of increasing the exposure the game was getting (I don't have the official quote). They said, "we're working on that". What reaches a wider audience when it comes to a game like Smash...adding another Nintendo character that doesn't reach a wider audience, like (no offense) Bandanna Waddle Dee or (again, no offense) Isaac from Golden Sun, which is likely relatively unknown to the gaming audience at large...OR, a character from a AAA series like Resident Evil, which is not only one of the largest media franchises in gaming, but is one that is recently making a sort of comeback? In terms of broadening the audience of Smash, the answer is clear. If you add new series that can spread the audience outside of the Nintendo fans that are already buying the game, you have a better opportunity to make a profit.

3) That one leak of Joker, Mementos, and Erdrick.
While this is effectively speculation, and only speculation, on my part...the Erdrick pack that this particular leak outlines is on par with the Joker pack. You get alternate skins of Erdrick and the Luminary, you get a stage, and Slime gets in...as basically an assist or part of the moveset. This is clearly "emblematic" of the Joker pack.

Out of 5 packs of paid DLC, two of them are 3rd party characters. Again, there's nothing to say that it's absolutely going to be entirely 3rd party characters, but I think it's likely. This leads to my NEXT point.

4) Nintendo has to be able to sell the DLC packs to a wider audience.
This is basically an extension of my previous point. What's easier to sell? A character from a series not in Smash yet, that brings a new moveset, new setting, new music, and potential new additional content, or a character that non-Nintendo fans will get hyped for?

I mean no disrespect to fans of the character, but selling a character isn't necessarily as easy as one might think. If you start with Joker, and then Erdrick or even if it's just the Luminary and then...follow it up with Bandanna Waddle Dee, a character that fans who aren't hardcore Nintendo players will likely see as "a blob with a spear", it makes it harder to sell the character. Now, Nintendo fans know there's more to BWD (while I'm not a huge fan of the pick myself, he's more than a blob with a stick). would be willing. But those same fans would buy the pack anyway. The point of the DLC is to get sales beyond Nintendo fans.

This isn't even me getting started with the negotiations that would likely take place. From simply a logistical standpoint, I'd wager the process of working with certain IP rights would be far easier with Japanese gaming companies as opposed to Western ones. Could western IP end up in playable Smash spots? Totally. Do I expect it? Not really. There's plenty to choose from when it comes to Capcom, Namco, and other companies that are still high quality characters.

I'll cut myself off here, and I'm not saying there's a 0% chance of Nintendo newcomers happening but I frankly don't think it's all that likely. There's more content to pull from when you look beyond the Nintendo library, it expands the theme of the game being "the biggest crossover in gaming history", and it appeals to a wider audience that fits with the "emblematic" Joker. Adding a Nintendo character does...very little of any of those by comparison.
