So my life has been a bit of a chaotic mess lately.
It's not fixed yet but most of it is over for now.
I can dedicate more time on this beautiful place now so I'm already slightly happier

I actually have a question.

Do Assist Trophies really deconfirm characters?
Is there truly no hope for Zero, Skull Kid, Takamaru, Knuckles, Issac and Lyn?
Or could we potentially see it happen?

I'm just wondering because of the fact that Little Mac made it into Sm4sh, but was an AT in Brawl. A lot of people want characters like Bomberman and Zero (my two personal top AT picks :colorful:) and could this mean that the Smash team might just add these characters?

I mean, the moveset potential for characters like Alucard, Zero, Bomberman and Akira is incredible, and these characters are surely popular enough to be in Smash. Surely?

Yes. We also can't have Young and Toon Link in the same game, Pokemon Trainer after 4 removed transformations, playable generic enemies, and multiple reps for third-party series.

No, Assist Trophies definitely can be fighters. In the next installment, that is.

I mean you can never be 100% certain, but the fact that they put in the effort to make them assist trophies in the base game shows that they probably didn't have any plans to add them as DLC later on. It's pretty dang unlikely we'll be seeing any of them as playable in the near future.

There's nothing theoretically stopping them from upgrading an Assist to a DLC character. But it's highly unlikely it's going to happen: those characters were likely made into ATs in the first place because they weren't deemed high priority.

Yes, assists do get uprgraded, but for the next game. So in Smash 6, we should see an assist get upgraded, as that's been the case in every game since Brawl, with Charizard first, then Mac, then DS and Isabelle.

So place your bets on the next upgrade

Assist trophies getting upgraded is entirely possible.

If/when there is a wave 2. This wave was decided on a month before the game released. It's very, very unlikely that any assist trophies will get promoted when they could have held them back as a fighter.

Color TV-Game 15 is basically a lock for the next game, tbh. Flies & Hand and Dr. Kawashima are high up there but wouldn't put too much faith in them.

I'm on the side that ATs deconfirm characters but really what's stopping Sakurai saying "OK, I hear you Waluigi." Obviously it takes time to make a brand new character from scratch but is removing an AT from the base game for that character difficult/doable? I know it's not like removing a feather from G&W but....

  • Waluigi is by far the most likely candidate: Nintendo might feel bleh about him but they can't deny his popularity and at this point, there aren't that many characters they can pick from without ignoring him
  • Shadow is also popular (or his popularity climbed significantly after this speculation cycle), but that really depends on what Sega wants to do as he's third party
  • Isaac remains a favourite in the speculation community, but I don't think he's ever becoming more than an assist trophy
  • Ashley is also a likely candidate, though that might depend what's happening with the Wario games over the next few years
  • I dunno about Krystal: hopes for her were stamped out pretty quickly this time round as her trophy was shown at E3
  • Bomberman is occupying a more prominent position after being made an AT, but again, depends what Konami wants to do
  • Alucard: ditto Konami, though I feel his chances could be decent as they might have more time to implement him
  • Not gonna lie, I really, really want Skull Kid as a playable fighter; but that will depend on the Zelda fans uniting behind a single character (his support, while a thing, came too late in Ultimate's development cycle)

There's a bit of irony in my Brave natured Ponyta having the Run Away ability in my current Platinum playthrough.

Brave is Ponyta btw.

I don't think they'd remove an AT from the base roster entirely. That'd be removing content for people who haven't bought the DLC.

They'd probably have to either make it so the AT doesn't show up if Waluigi is being played or make it appear darker or something. Either way though I'm not counting on it happening.
