I started buying Premium back when I browsed this site mostly on devices that couldn't use Adblock for one reason or another because things chugged like hell without it.

At this point I'm paying for it out of a mix of sentimentality and as insurance in case I ever want to browse on nonstandard devices again. But I use uBlock Origin on top of it because pretty much every site I frequented without it sooner or later bonked me over the head with an ad that was secretly some really shoddily programmed ransomware or some other garbage. Only shut it off if a site makes it even more obnoxious to browse with it on, and even then I'm not even remotely happy because at this point my trust in ad services is completely shattered.

While I'm here and not playing Resident Evil 0, I guess I'll throw my 2 cents in on at least a few of the DLC choices. I'll just outline what I think we're looking at.

In my previous post, I mentioned that I don't think we'll get more than one character from any one company.

Capcom
From Capcom, we already have Mega Man and two picks from Street Fighter. These are two of Capcom's most celebrated series to date. We also have the Rathalos, the iconic monster from Monster Hunter as a boss.

Despite the amazing result of Monster Hunter World, I agree with friends of mine when they've said that Rathalos is basically the mascot of Monster Hunter, and is their most iconic piece. A Monster Hunter fighter could be cool, but it just seems like...weird. It's nothing substantial, but I just don't expect it to happen.

While Monster Hunter World is the highest selling Capcom game ( I think of all time? It really is great though), their highest grossing franchise is none other than Resident Evil. There's no other franchise or genre in a playable state in Smash already. Do I think there might be minimal comparisons to a Snake moveset for Jill, Leon, or another RE protagonist? Maybe. But there's some interesting stuff for a long-ranged, strategic zoning movesets for these guys. The stage options are fantastic, and even some items (collecting green and red herbs to restore health, anyone?). It's a multimedia franchise that is certainly known to many a gamer.

Aside from Resident Evil, Capcom has other series to go to. Unfortunately, we already know Dante hasn't been picked. Amaterasu from Okami, and Phoenix Wright of the Ace Attorney series are also nice choices. Phoenix Wright especially would be a "less than expected" choice.

Namco/Bandai
By no means do I think a character from NB is guaranteed, but I will at least comment on the fact that Sakurai went out of his way to specifically mention Heihachi and Lloyd Irving specifically in interviews about the content of the game. Both of them have had Mii Fighter costumes. I think it's entirely plausible, if we even get a NB character to begin with, that it's one of these two dudes.

That said, i think we could get neither. Or, simply nothing from Namco at all.

Square Enix
There are some great picks from SE, but I firmly believe Dragon Quest is going to be the pick. It's simply got the legacy for JRPG titles, the longevity, and...I'm sorry, but after that last Direct spending enough time on DQXI, I felt that it was simply happening. They treated the title like it was the next coming of Gaming Jesus. I entirely think we're getting Erdrick/the Luminary.

Other great picks, however, would be Lara Croft, Sora, or another Final Fantasy character. Or Chrono.

SEGA
I'm not sure whether to count Bayonetta and Joker as "SEGA characters" already, but aside from Sonic I simply don't know that I expect anything from SEGA. Sorry, SEGA fans!

Koei Tecmo
I've never played Ninja Gaiden. I've frankly only played Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors. I have no experience with Ryu Hayabusa, but I also have no qualms with him being in Smash. I simply view it as, "Meh, not one I would have picked", but I will be satisfied simply because I can see it as a legacy series that started in the old days of gaming. He's also, like, the original ninja in the first place.

SNK
i watched my friend play King of Fighters one time.

I have little experience with these games, but my questions is more or less, what would Terry Bogard bring that Ryu doesn't already? What fighting style does he bring that makes him stand out from the rest? This is one in particular that I'm simply not convinced of.

I could absolutely see him getting a Mii Fighter costume though.
I wish I could write essays like you do. You have absolutely no problem speculating like this but when I do speculation once I start writing I can't stop writing fed to the rules and I hit the ground running and the next thing you know I have a ten+ page speculation piece.

People talking about nostalgia from the late-2000's/early-2010's having grown up in the decade before that.

Yuck!

If Terry at one point gets added, the best part will be hearing this for the 999th time.

Us 90's kids are gonna bully the 2000's babies.

And then the 80's adults are gonna bully us 90's kids.

It's a vicious cycle.

I've flip flopped a lot on the idea of DLC being all 3rd party, but at this point, yeah, it probably will be. Releasing Joker and Erdrick to then go do someone like Bandana Dee or Dixie doesn't really fit with what Nintendo's hyped up the past few months. It would be viewed as a disappointment by a lot of folks outside the Smash bubble, methinks, and I do agree with Scoliosis Jones Scoliosis Jones somewhat about Nintendo's desire to reach a larger demographic with DLC picks. However, I feel it would be wise to consider that picks may also be influenced by recent business decisions and partnerships on Nintendo's part.

Assuming leaks prove true (and by the looks of it, odds are they will) that P5 is coming to Switch, I believe it is the result of Atlus and Nintendo working closer than ever now thanks to Joker's Smash inclusion. Nintendo may be using DLC picks to advertise the good relations they currently have with major Japanese developers and use it as an opportunity to work closer with them to bring key titles to Switch.

I'm personally not sure how high I'd rate western characters chances, TBH. Nintendo typically focuses on what's popular within their home market first. Banjo would be swell for super hardcore Smash fans in the west, but everyone else? Hardly anyone will know who the bear and bird even are if they didn't own an N64 as a kid, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not believe Banjo & Kazooie ever had much of a presence over there. Apart from DKC, Rare games were a western Nintendo fan thing similar to how Metroid has its fans over here, yet it's not even a tiny blip on the radar over there.

Nintendo wants big and exciting, and they typically focus on what's popular at home. Like others have already said, I think popular picks from Japan will be what drives this DLC.

Is it selfish to not like the Idea of the DLC being all 3rd party cause you haven't played a lot of third party games?

Cause that's how I feel, I'm a Nintendo fan first and foremost plus all the 3rd party Characters I want have some history with Nintendo (Geno & Banjo) or are some exception (Sans).

It's interesting that you bring up Terry. I'm not going to argue he would be super distinct from Ryu but he's still unique. Fundamentally, compared to Ryu's proper martial arts Terry is mainly a street brawler, which gives him a different style to his punches and kicks and a different personality in the way he animates. Looking at actual moves, Terry's known for his signature moves Burn Knuckle and Power Wave

These I think are somewhat unique in the larger context of Smash, certainly pretty distinct to the street fighters. That's not to mention Terry's acrobatics too

Overall, while I think Terry wouldn't be the most unique character of all time, I'd say he has more than enough to make him feel distinct.
When the character from another fighting game franchise is more of a street fighter than the mascot of the Street Fighter franchise.

The DLC will be entirely third party imo

Not one first party promo rep or anything like that. They got 5 chances for HUGE bangers. They can't wimp out and have 4 huge third party characters and then some promo rep for an upcoming Switch game imo.

I'm sure I'll be wrong though.

Smash Tour
Oh **** I forgot we might get Smash Tour back in 3.0.0...

PLEASE

A better Smash Tour would be amazing.

That's why we're going to get a bonus "promotional" Nintendo character.

And that's going to be the Astral Chain Twins. Mark my words on this one.

If DLC characters tie-in with new Switch releases, I can see Banjo-Kazooie coming with Rare Replay on Switch.

I've read that there's a cult-following for Banjo-Kazooie in Japan, but tbh I never actually researched this please excuse my laziness.

I wouldn't doubt at least one Western DLC character, though; Ridley was added pretty much because of the West (I realize he's owned by Nintendo and his series is still going, though).

I also stand by Ezio being a sleeper pick. I did a whole rant about him. I’m fact, since I am nothing if not repetitive and a shill for myself, here’s that rant in all its glory. Forgive the sudden wall of text. Ahem

Ezio is the main character of Assassin’s Creed 2, developed by Ubisoft. As an assassin, his family is killed setting up a revenge quest against the Templar Order. Ezio quickly became a breakout character. Assassin’s Creed 2 was received better than the first, and Ezio would later go onto star in several more games. He is undeniably the series’ most popular character, and the series itself continues to thrive and sell well to this very day. Hell, Assassin’s Creed 2 alone sold over 1.6 million in its very first week, and has sold well over 10 million copies. Ubisoft has famously had a rather strong relationship with Nintendo as of late. Rayman, another of the company’s mascots, was featured as a trophy in Smash 4, one of the only third party trophies without a character in the game. Rayman alongside the Rabbids are featured in Ultimate as spirits, and Rayman legends was pledged to be a Wii U exclusive and wa spublished by Nintendo in Japan. Hell, just look at Mario+Rabbids or Starlink. Nintendo has a tight grip over their IP, so the fact that they trusted Ubisoft with these crossovers, even with their biggest franchise in Mario, just demonstrates their relationship. Needless, to say, negotiations wouldn’t be an issue, and based on datamining it seems Rayman was included as one of the earlier spirits. Ubisoft was one of the first developers to announce a Switch game, alongside Sega(got a new character) and Square(rumoured to get a new character). Now, you may by asking:

Why wouldn’t it be Rayman then?

Here’s the thing, Rayman, while certainly finding success, is just eclipsed by Assassin’s Creed in popularity. Remember, Nintendo is ultimately the one deciding here, and Assassin’s Creed is arguably Ubisoft’s biggest franchise these days. Ezio himself is very iconic, and with the DLC lineup seemingly going for popular third-parties, Ezio fits that lineup quite nicely.
Here’s another thing that’s pretty interesting
https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&t=2045&v=VZ8VyX8-PV8
That’s Xander Mobus saying that alongside Rayman, one of the fake names he got given was Altair, protagonist of the first Assassin’s Creed. This suggests two things. One, NOA at least has Assassin’s Creed on the mind. Two, NOA has other Ubisoft franchises apart from Rayman and the Rabbids on the mind. There’s also the question of Rayman being a trophy for two games in a row now which makes me wonder if the Smash team really thinks he should be added.

But Assassin’s Creed isn’t popular in Japan!

That’s another interesting thing. Surprisngly, even to me, while the series initially seems to have sold poorly over in Japan (Assassin’s Creed 2 sold around 250,000 copes in Japan based on the notoriously innacurate VGChartz), the more recent entries seem to have flipped that around. In this interview http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2018/09/12/assassins-creed-odyssey-rpg-series-transformation/ Ubisoft Asia general manager Steve Miller says the series has a “core following” in Japan and is one of the most successful Western series over there. That’s a direct statement from a guy who would know about this. These articles http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2018..._assassins_creed_odyssey_starts_strong_on_ps4
http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2017...rts_assassins_creed_origins_climbs_into_top_5 depict the recent entries in the series topping the sales upon their week of release. With this, I think it’s fair to say that the series at least isn’t a flop over there. For comparison, here’s how Rayman sells over in Japan https://nintendoeverything.com/rayman-legends-sells-under-1500-copies-in-its-first-week-in-japan/ https://gonintendo.com/stories/302881-japan-rayman-legends-definitive-edition-first-day-sell-through
This is just another argument for Ezio being chosen over Rayman. Whether it’s the East or the West, Assassin’s Creed frankly eclipses Rayman in popularity.
Here’s another thing, in Soul Calibur 5, the guest character for that game was our main man Ezio himself.

While Soul Calibur has included characters like Geralt who are far more popular in the West than Japan, this just further demonstrates that Ezio has clout. He’s been noticed by Japanese devs. He’s not an unknown. Ultimately no matter which way you slice it, Ezio is gonna be a bigger name than pretty much anybody else from Ubisoft,

The series has no history with Nintendo!

While the series ain’t exactly known for being on Nintendo, it’s made appearances. There have been several Assassin’s Creed games for the Wii U and 3DS. Just two days ago they announced that Assassin’s Creed 3 and Liberation would be remastered for the Switch. Hell, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has been ported to the Switch too, albeit through a streaming service and exclusively in Japan. Another thing is that while Joker’s press release mentions SMT’s history with Ninty, Persona itself has never been on a Nintendo console, and with NOJ making decisions here I do have to wonder how big a factor history really is. With the rumoured Erdrick and the confirmed Joker, Nintendo seems to be wanting to draw in new audiences to Smash with the DLC. Ezio certainly does that considering he’s coming from a popular series that doesn’t have much overlap with Smash. I will concede though that this is a blow against him.

He’s too violent!

While Ezio is, y’know, an assassin, his actual weapons aren’t really much more violent than Snake choking someone or Joker using his knife. Plus Ike and Samus are mercenaries! They managed to fit him in Soul Calibur, Smash shouldn’t be too much harder. Again though, this is a bit of a point against him.

In conclusion, while Ezio is held back to an extent by his lack of history and violence, if Ubisoft is gonna get a character, I think it’s gonna be him. While Ubisoft couldvery well just not get a character, I think their (to put it bluntly) sucking up to Nintendo in recent years might just net them something in terms of Smash. Ezio is honestly an underrated character right now imo.”
There, now you know why I think E

I still need KMDP KMDP 's tributes, as his slot was reserved but does not have any named tributes yet.

Soon as that's done, my Hunger Games sim should get started!

Eh? Wha- huh?

Oh, right. Tributes.

Well, if you didn't just give up waiting for me and are still waiting, here's my picks.

I'd share it here, but its ecchi.
Its from an artist called SlugBox, who I love the artstyle of, and includes both her and 'Becky'.
As an idea of what kind of ecchi it is..I literally bought a body pillow of it at Metrocon since I literally couldn't find any other stuff of her there (got plenty of art prints for Makoto Niijima and even one of Tae Takemi).
Just search SlugBox Kawakami_Sadayo on Gelbooru or Google and you'll come across it eventually.
*looks it up*
Ah, yes. I see.

Fun fact, I've drawn this kind of ecchi drawing before of one of my OCs.

...And that's all people here are going to get out of me on the topic outside of PMs/Discord.

It turns out that Nintendo never approached Criterion Games to actually make a F-Zero game. Much earlier, there was a story or interview about how that developer had been a candidate for developing a new F-Zero.

Therefore, it seems like Nintendo definitely doesn't give a single **** about making any F-Zero game anytime soon.
normally i'd say F-Zero GX HD would fit everyone's need for F-Zero's return in some shape or form since many consider it the series' pinnacle

...but then i remembered Amusement Vision disbanded :c

tbh with how closely Nintendo and Microsoft are getting nowadays I wouldn't see them saying no to Banjo-Kazooie if Sakurai wanted to get them as a fan-pick. He did consider them for Melee, with Microsoft buying Rare just causing legal issues back then.

I feel the same. I always only ever had Nintendo consoles. Smash Bros. started as ''Nintendo's All Stars'', so most of the faces were known to me, and I thought that it was the ultimate game for Nintendo fans. But now, I feel like I'm poorely rewarded to be with them since my childhood.

Don't get me wrong, I actually love most third party characters that are already in, because I know them too one way or another. But thinking that Toad or Dixie Kong will probably never get in just because there are bigger stars up there feels, well, unfair.

Again, this is just a feeling.

After characters like Joker and Erdrick? Yeah, it'd be viewed as dull IMHO. Hardcore DK fans would like it, but what about everyone else? What about people outside hardcore Smash speculation? Nintendo's going big with this DLC. Joker was just the beginning, I 100% guarantee none of us will ever see it coming when all is said and done for DLC.

You're darn right that was an intentional reference. I don't care if it's overdone, I saw the opening and took it, dang it.
