It has been quite some time since the last aborted attempt at an inter UC crew battle, and I'm curious as to what the smash scenes are like at the nation's finest public university system. How strong would you say your scene is? Does melee or brawl, or even SSB, dominate or do they coexist? What's the general level of skill? Finally is there any interest in trying to put together another UC crew battle?

I'll start with Davis. I'd say we're doing pretty well as a scene. We've got several regulars and quite a few freshman who say they're interested. I've yet to meet any of then so I don't know how much they will be playing. We aren't huge but certainly dedicated, primarily to melee. Pink Shinobi is very good, and a few others would probably be considered "good" by community standards. The rest of us are about average competitive players. I think it'd be fun to do a crew battle but there would be a lot to work out. That's about all I can think of now. Hopefully this generates some good discussion.

CC people have more time to practice, in general. Its not as intensive as a non-CC, so less work = more time. Makes sense right?

How Ken did it, I dont know.
lol ken was basically good ever since he started playing smash, his playstyle never really changed. who needs practice if ur a beast

well i'm surprised no one from UCSD has said anything here, but our smash scene hasn't really materialized as of yet, seeing as there hasn't been a tri-weekly yet (still waiting on that...). There are some good melee players here (though i don't know if anyone is pink shinobi status... anymore anyway) and Azn_Lep would know better than i about the brawl scene...

Their should be a designated driver or something that would drive each UC crew to another UC's monthly. Cuz we know not everyone has a car.
heh if you started a university club you can try and get the university to pay for it; I would totally do smash as an intercollegiate sport...

Korea already made a sport out of starcraft.

As for UCSB the best brawl player I know of right now is Nezumi

for melee we've been losing all the good players every year...I'm old enough to remember way back to the crew battle in 06' (sorry UCI). we lost all our starters Aaron Wu, Andrew castliio, Auriel, Zander... well technically Zander is still here I'm just not sure if he still plays; and then just last year we lost a really good marth player. The rest switched to brawl...

and I'm not that great...

community college = best smashers.

iunno why, but thats usually how i see it.

LOL
what a joke
UC's have the best players

CC students tend to have less free time they are usually working or trying to get the **** out of there. plus they have to commute everywhere so they don't really socialize with other students on campus
if youre a UC student you basically dorm on campus and you get bored more often then not, so you meet others on campus who play and kill time between classes
I recall mikeY telling me he and Azeem would ditch class all the time because they'd be playing at UCI.
Every UC has atleast one notable player attending, except for maybe ucsb, but they still have a community non the less

At least for WC, the majority of the breakdown (currently) is this:

Baysians (worth naming): They all go to CCSF, with the exception of Zhu, who got good while in HS

Mango/Lucky: I think theyre either still in HS.

Other Socal community: They could or could be in non-CC (All i know off the top of my head is Kira) but sondering their ages, they've been in HS most of this time.

BACK THEN:

I remember watching UCI vs UCSD crew battles, and I think that was the bulk of the top UC players at the time. Ken was at CSULB, and I dont know who else was doing what at the time.

Unfortunately, most of these guys have quit

mango and lucky are in junior year, j666 and some other 8-bit guys are in senior year

a lot of socal goes to CSU Northridge, then everybody else works and/or goes to community college

@ superrad:
I make ucsc sound better than it is, but we're getting this **** together for sure, can't wait to play you this weekend

We were thinking about doing a smash club at Davis. I know there's a Halo club already, but I don' know how much money they get.

The CC vs. UC thing is dumb and not the point of this thread at all.

i haven't been four stocked that many times. thank you smash community for sandbagging against me.
but yeah i sucks. sheridan and minh are way ahead of me.
i have a tendency to play up to other people's skill in teams a bit though. mostly because i can be retardedly "aggressive" and not get punished for it as much.

but it doesn't matter because i'm really cool.
:008:

edit: to clarify, my "if i went to ucsc..." comment was more that I would be able to play melee more often and maybe actually get better, not that I would help UCSC be a better smash school.

You should. get smash some recognition; halo gets too much as it is. and maybe get another college crew battle going

2006 was too long ago. and this time I would get to be a starter; although if last time was any indication of current skill ucsb would get rocked since I'm not much better than I was back then.

I also think a crew battle would be fun, but it'd be a lot of stuff to work out so at this point I'm just trying to generate discussion.

The problem with doing a smash club is that it's hard to get people to commit. Smashfests are done informally here and (not to blow my own horn but) I'm probably the only person who'd be willing to head such a group.

haha, fair enough. our guys are really lazy when it comes to organizing so I know what you mean. I probably should have made the smash club a long time ago. oh well I'll just settle for the LAN parties we have that are paid for by our student government :)

hopefully if we can work all the details out, later in the year I wouldn't mind participating in another UC/college crew battle assuming me and the ucsb crew can find a ride to wherever

aww yeah our two +one man crew. that's me and gosu + junk.
heh...

there are others dante...like 5 other players about my level...it's just that they all live in IV and don't really play when you're available; and I'm not entirely sure if they still play

if you're free some random weekend when they are we can practice a little and get junk to a higher level

I suck at smash. >_>; Cuz my fingers are slow and I play PEEch. If only I could play Fox like Rey and Zhu.

I've been waiting forever for a Tekken 6 machine to come to Davis. >_>; Our Student Union Games corner kinda sucks...
