Tips against fighting a VERY good olimar

My friend has a VERY good olimar, and at times it seems extremely difficult to get up close and **** him with mk. I've tried approaching him with mach tornado, but he knows how to out prioritize it. I generally stay away from attacking olimar from above because I'll get *****. I can't do my forward+b because he'll just knock me out of it. I've tried shorthopping and then going into a fair and it has worked well, but it's predictable. I've also walked away from him to avoid being hit then ran to him to either dash attack or shield grab him from my dash. I've also tried using mk's forward tilts as well as his down tilt to try to peck at him.

It just seems like olimar just outranges mk in terms of ground fighting. His aerials come out really fast, and his pikmin are annoying. Can someone please help? I was in a tourney yesterday and I lost in the quarterfinals because of his ridiculous olimar.

Be patient. Wait until his ending lag, and then attack.

A good Olimar player won't just spam fsmash and the grabs all the time, though. If you try to wait for this to happen, the Olimar can just start chucking Pikmin at you...and the Pikmin rack up damage much faster than one would expect. While your theory makes some sense on paper, this won't always be the best solution.

I find myself having troubles with a very good Olimar myself...Olimar's ridiculous ground game makes me question the supposed 70:30 matchup that MK has going for him on paper; I believe that this match is a bit more even than that.

Well, MK's falling uairs do wonders when it comes to juggling Olimar, but getting Olimar that high up in the air is much easier said than done. Any ideas for making this easier?

key to fighting olimar is catching his lag, getting him off the stage, and gimping him. once you knock him back enough to where he cant return just by jumping, you've got him, just ledge guard him and its GG.

I can usually attack him out of down+B attack if he is camping, every so often. Just short hop, diagonal down+B to the ground, and you'll attack him from behind. Infinite Dimensional Caping also helps in this match really well in this match.

That might make a useful mixup of sorts on rare occasions, but the attack doesn't come out all that fast, and if he whips out his shield in time, it's basically another free grab or a free fsmash. I'd use this tactic seldomly...

Oh, and IDC is banned in pretty much every tourney. :ohwell:

SH nair will kill the pikmin he's throwing and allow you to get closer.
Wow, I never thought of that...lol I'm dumb...but thanks for pointing that out :) This would obviously still be a bad idea if you're close enough since he can just punish your SH nair with a grab/pivot grab if you space it incorrectly.

But yeah, I'm going to go reread the Olimar and MK boards for their opinions on the matchup; I'm tired of getting owned by this insane Olimar that my friend plays :dizzy:

I thought Olimar tips were supposed to be funny, like "grab the edge and wait for the word GAME! to show up on the screen."

Retreating SH fairs work, as does nair to get pikmin off of you, if you want to camp back a bit.

mk has a garteed KO on olimar if grabed and slide to the ledge and olimar wastes his second jump on the dtilts.

you gota take this matchh verry seriously because if u dont out gay olimar YOU WILL eat a purple pikmin and DIE at 80%

olimars mad dumb tho lol his grab game is like 3 bowsers its insane. and he can rack up realliz good damage fast. DI outa the upair

Another problem I've noticed is that olimar can KO metaknight with his upsmash at around 100%.

Keep him in the air. Olimar is easy to juggle Sloop works good for this. the only thing to worry is his dair. I allso find that a unsuspeting nado works well to.

If you juggle him with falling uairs, you don't have to worry about dair because uairs outrange dairs (you can be hit out of a Shuttle Loop by Oli's dair). Also, Olimar has a MUCH harder time getting around falling uairs than Shuttle Loops...he can just airdodge or whistle through a Shuttle Loop, but falling uairs, when "spaced" accordingly, keep the hitbox on Olimar for long enough to outlast the whistle or airdodge, thus keeping Olimar in the air more safely and surely. The only problem is that getting Olimar high enough in the air to juggle with falling uairs is easier said than done...

Olimar is a major pain in the ***. I recommend going directly after his pikmen when he uses a ranged attack like F-smash or >B toss with quick attacks (D-tilt, f-tilt), and then jumping over and using your Nado.

If you can wear down his shield at all, Nado ASAP and go for juggles.

Otherwise just stay aggressive and mix it up with your FASTEST attacks at all times (D-tilt, D-smash, F-air, Jabs, Up-B). The goal is for Olimar to fail to punish something and get knocked off the edge where you have a shot to gimp.

spot dodge, go for a dtilt, then don't let the pressure up till he's off the stage or in the air. dair to tornado works well, since they ussually usmash after dair and the tornado outprioritizes usmash

Meh, I play Olimar AND Meta Knight. If I was fighting my Olimar with my Meta Knight, I'd play it safe and use well timed fakes with retreating fairs and nairs until an opening appears. Once you get Olimar off the ground, then that should be that.

Olimar's airgame is also pretty good from all directions but below. But his priority doesn't compare to MK and his attacks aren't quite as fast.

I have something very simple and easy to do so that you can never have to worry about Olimar again:

Attack from angles.

MK's down air attack has a wide, arced range and dodges smashes as well as Pikmin throws while attacking when he's vulnerable. It can also knock him back to the side if you time it just so and you can wall of pain him off to his death or edge guard.

I personally prefer the wall of pain as it is great for shattering confidence. You can also chain grab heavier characters with MK's down throw, but I doubt it would work with Olimar.

MK's forward air has a pretty high priority. It will kill tossed Pikmin, and I haven't checked, but I'm willing to but since you're up in the air, it wouldn't matter for his forward smash.
