I've been playing Smash competitively since Brawl's release. I always thought I was a decent player, but could never do well in tourneys. I did always have rotten luck where I was paired against the best players in the first match.
But after my tournament today, I realized that, I'm just not that good. I never got that, i'll say, *spark*, where I just understood the game. I'm just... not good.

I'll still be on Smashboards, checkin out specific threads, (ponies), but unless I manage to find, like, a quality teacher, I most likely won't be returning. When the new Smash is released, I will be back. And I will preform well. Count on that.

So... GG's Smashboards.

Smash Bros. just felt like one of the things I truly enjoyed, and was good at. Reality slaps me in the face.

I like playing the game, not cheating the system. :p

i could, arguable, play again. but im too lazy and too proud to lose/learn from my mistakes... i didnt want to make a fool of myself...
Trying again is never foolish. It's courageous. I am stopping altogether due to it being 3 years...

Never say never, I guess if you don't see yourself improving then there's always the next Smash, if you practice now maybe by then you'll feel accustomed to the new game even if it does turn out a little different.

Anyway good luck.

I never really used the term, "main"... Some days, i'm great with a character, another day, i'm not so great. My best are, :pikachu: , :pit: , and :ness:

My ego...It's OVER 9000!
I'm sure you visit the character boards to get some help.

Watch videos of ESAM and Anther. They are some of the best Pikachus around.

All I can say now is that it's up to you on where you want to go from here.

Quite the disappoint. For me I'm one of the worst in TX, and I never venture outside of SA so I have to deal with top names here and our upcoming players here every local tournament. But it's the spark to play that matters, sad that you lost yours :<

That's the worst reason to quit a hobby. Profession or something, I could understand. Hobby, not really.

I've just failed so much, my hobby is becoming less and less fun. Maybe if there was a local scene, I could enjoy it a bit more, so I don't have to travel to MD every time.

That is called ''Mental Suicide''. You're suiciding something you used to do for what? ''I sux''. That is a temporary problem, and everyone goes through this stage at one time or another. Executing a permanent solution to this simple bump in the road is probably why you can't improve 3 years later. You have absolutely no mentality whatsoever to defend you as the person that you are. It's not just our characters that we have to rely on to win at a game. It's ourselves, and how much willpower we have as an individual.

Dang I went to Dallas :(
See, I had this problem like over a month ago. I was debating even cancelling the week long trip I had to genesis. I took a break until one week before the tournament. The tournament that brought me back was one I placed 9th in (one missed thunder away from 5th ;;) and the break allowed me to feel completely fresh in both playing and mentality.

So maybe just take a break for a while, focus on everything but Smash, or at the very least, pick up a new character to have fun with.

I would love to experiment with new characters, I just have NO ONE to play with, which is such a **** shame. I've been playing Smash with my neighbor for 11 years, we have the EXACT same playstyle. Except I'm better :p

you're either gonna have to pick meta up.

or pick a character that is known to have a "decent" machup against him(these just seem to become harder to find anymoer asn meta players learn to play gayer and gayer...certain matchpus that used to be thought to be somewhat even to managable, have now become impossible.)

if you haven't done that yet, then thats what your last resort is gonna be.

this is brawl, and the honest truth is, is you'll never be able to go anywhere unless you pick either that broken masked bat of hell, or one of the characters that can tolerate his BS better then the others.

So you gave up just because you suck. Awesome reason to quit. With that mentality you should quit, because you'll never succeed.

And no one to play with? I've have 1 person to play with if that most of my time as a player. Travel!

I wasn't great at Brawl (I was decent), and I didn't have a secondary in Brawl (in Melee I have too many!), but I still enjoyed myself, and I'm still working on improving myself. I'm also trying to make my brother go to tournaments (he really hates losing, though), since he has ridiculous reflexes and understanding of many types of games, as well as teach my girlfriend so she can learn the games I love (and she said she wouldn't mind going to a tournament with me). I haven't been to a tournament in like 20 months, but eventually I'm probably going to go to one, because I had fun, met a lot of cool people, and learned a lot.

I still remember how I had an awesome match in a match deciding game. I was Toon Link (as I always am), and I had the stage choice. I was going to choose Rainbow Cruise, but he said he'd play Meta if I did that, so we agreed to play on The Summit (I think he played G&W) I remember the match was hilariously fun. We were both of played very aggressively and had very individualistic ways of playing, we both knew the stage, and every 10 seconds one of us almost got eaten by that dang fish (plus nobody camped. YEAH!). We both got up to like 200% damage on our last stock (because we were in the weird gravity area), and the finally was insane (everyone thought I won after I up B'd him, only to find out he barely lived). I barely lost, but I laughed so much, had so much fun in the match, and so did my opponent and everyone watching. Stuff like is what makes playing games with other people so great.

It isn't always about winning, it's about learning, making friends, and enjoying yourself. Besides, if you do the latter 3, they could end up making you a good player. If you look at the history of great smash bros players, many were mediocre until they just "lit up." Mango was around for a while before he became the Mango we know today. And that didn't happen in days, it probably took many months or a few years.

Also, whoever mentioned breaks is right. Sometimes taking a break makes you player better. It clears your head mentally, it causes you to think more about strategies and how to apply them instead of playing, and it really can be your best preparation to having fun and winning.

No. I'm not going to retire. I was in a ****ty mentality after a terribad performance at the last tournament. Just need a Smash Scene closer to where I live, hate the 2 hour trips every time. :/

Next tournament, i'll do better.

If the new smash is bull**** like brawl, you WON'T perform well. The only way to get good at smash is to work you *** off trying. It ain't coming to you in a few hours.

Stop trying to talk him back into playing Brawl. It's a terrible game and it's not fun. I say enjoy your retirement playing fun games.
