Went to a tournament this Saturday. Got 17th place. I got on stream with some hot Lucas on Lucas action.

Nice one, dude! I loved your footwork and that spike was absolutely disgusting. Good to see some more Lucas rep in the Midwest, as there aren't very many Lucas mains here in Indiana

HaKii took 2nd in Shockwave 62 with primarily Lucas, but he used Captain Falcon and Samus during some matches.

hey there!

Can someone critique my Lucas play, please? I love the character so much and really wanna be as good with him as possible:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K72oS1-cHr0

How did I do in the neutral? was I too spammy? I'd love to know :-)
A few things I noticed from your footage:

- lack of Zair. Don't forget that Zair snuffs Mario's pills; it's your go-to zoning and read tool in this match-up, since Mario struggles with disjoints. Catching him unawares with Zair can lead into D-tilt shenanigans.

- lack of D-smash and PK Freeze at the ledge. PK Freeze can bait your opponents to recover low, after which D-smash will often catch their recovery.

- remember D-tilt as an OoS option. It's often safer than a simple shield-grab and has more reward than your jab.

For other nifty tricks, see HaKii's videos above, because holy crap his Lucas is solid.

I have no idea how that worked, but my guess is Falcon's dash is so extended behind him that perhaps the hitbox hit his butt cheek as he was running past.

I don't understand this game sometimes.

So I recently went to a tournament and got 2nd place. This in of itself isn't bad. It's the manner in which I lost. I played a character who, in my opinion, is versatile, in a very linear manner, which led to me getting read like a book, and taken out like a chump.

That, coupled with the Genesis 3 matches I watched made me really want to make my play more dynamic and unpredictable. As well as adding reads and mindgames/baits into my gameplay as well.

So in the videos I included are specific ones. The first one against Peach, I noticed that he was Float Cancelling. I'm not familiar with the MU with an experienced Peach at all, so if you could tell me some thing that I could have done but didn't, that would be helpful.

Vs Peach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD6fHZgGiBI

The other matches are against a Mewtwo who I played a decent amount of matches in a row against. The main thing I want to draw attention to is how well we adapted to each other, how well we mixed each other up, and how well we adapted to those mix ups.

Vs. Mewtwo: (Multiple matches)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX0KVcTBddQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdsQ2L1k6ls

And one final thing I want to ask for is a general guage of what you think of my skill level. Where do you think I would have ended up at something like Genesis?

Thanks.

I made a video tutorial showing how to do lucas's down throw to up air kill confirm combo. I know most lucas mains already know how to do this, but if you don't know, you should check it out!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7HwgO0sNos

Also, I call it the PK Hoo Hah in this video, but I've heard it called other things too. If there is an official name for it made by Lucas mains that I'm unaware of, let me know and I'll update it.

Hey I was wondering if someone could please critique my Lucas. Certainly not the best I've played, got real sloppy in the last game:

You can't really see it much in this set but I struggle a lot with defensive play styles.. Usually forced to swap to someone like falcon in certain match ups.

May not be the best person to give you tips, but I did notice a few things:

- Handling pressure: While Ryu is pretty safe on shield with some decent moves, you kind of broke down as soon as he got near you. I'd suggest trying to use some fast moves like jab or f-tilt to push them away and retreat, or possibly follow up depending on the situation.

- Handling projectiles: I saw you adapt in this aspect in some of the matches, but it seems you had trouble with Ryu's projectiles when he threw them out. Keep in mind that z-air can cancel most projectiles and is decently fast and safe. I wouldn't recommend always using PSI Magnet as it can be punished when used a lot and always isn't worth using to heal, especially against Red Hadouken.

- Use poking options: Always make sure to keep pressure on your opponent even if it's from far away. You used the PK Fire bounce very well and accurately, but something like z-air would likely keep you more safe in these situations. This doesn't always apply to every matchup or situation but just keep this in mind.

This is what I found and I hope any part of this helps. TBH your Lucas looks LEAGUES better than mine, but I thought I might put in some effective input/tips if I could. Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a fantastic day. :b:

For sure work on fighting that fire spam. if you time it, you can jump or roll back after absorbing something, but red hadoken isn't worth much at all so try more to zair them or bat them back.
You also were fishing really hard in the last match for a grab, which did eventually work, but try to switch it up with some zoning moves (since you were at kill percent).
Great games.

Thought you guys might enjoy this.

Me vs Marss from yesterday's weekly. He secondaries Lucas so we've ditto'd the last couple times we've met in bracket.

Anyone have any tips for Cloud? Every time I run into one at locals that's basically the end of it for me.

Here's me playing a Cloud on FG https://youtu.be/_Oe8siQ0GsI I got destroyed in several games with this guy. This is the only one I won where this person played Cloud. I frick up my out-of-grab aerials pretty frequently and I gotta work on that

Here's one where I lose (as ROB though) https://youtu.be/Khm8gIBQMxc

The matchup is a big blind spot for me. I can deal with camping Clouds but aggressive ones are out of my league. I don't know if I should find another character for the matchup or if I just gotta work at it until I get it

EDIT: Sorry, might have misunderstood the point of this thread. If I should take critique requests somewhere else I'll gladly do it

Hey Everyone, ViceGrip here, former brawl ness main and I now main Ludwig and secondary Lucas in smash 4. I use Lucas to cover some of Jr.'s bad matchups such as pikachu, villager, megaman, and mario/rosalina. Here is a recent match of me playing in tournament, if anyone has any advice or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated, thanks! Lucas is a lot of fun and has a plenty of tools to keep up in a lot of matchups imo.

Hey guys, got some videos for ya! They are both from a tournament I attended last month. Didn't feel like I played very well, especially compared to how I've played during practice recently. If you have any tips, they would be very much appreciated. Just FYI, I lose both matches. So that's why I'm really trying to look for some feedback, if possible. Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a fantastic day. :b:

I never knew I needed this in my life but now I do. Check what Lucas does at the 0:43 mark. >.<
Yo!!! this is so good. I need to learn this.

Also, would anyone be willing to give feedback on my lucas? I don't main him, but I am trying to get better with him so I can viably use him as bigger tournaments. Here are some videos from a recent weekly where I went full lucas:

Winners Bracket vs inkline (Marth)
Winners Quarters vs Zubair (Luigi)
Losers Semis vs savagestevo (Fox)
Losers Finals vs Zubair (Luigi)
Grand Finals vs Ragna (Ryu)

For reference, I am currently 6th on my regions PR. Zubair is 9th and Ragna is 2nd. The other 2 players aren't top 10 in our region, so I am expected to beat them every time, even if I am playing secondaries.

Any feedback on things I need to do better, or matchup tips would be great. Thanks in advance

EDIT: Took out a whole lot of text

(Completed as of 7/21/16 8:22 AM CST)

This is a month old but I finally got around to posting this thanks to the Lucas discord reminder!

Date: 6/19/16
Tournament: Smash Fight Club (SFC), Weekly Tourney

Location: Houston, Texas
DISCLAIMER: Our tournament had a redemption bracket called the "Smash Pit" for those that go 0-2 in winner's and lose round 1/2 of the loser's bracket. So my placing may not be eligible.
Placing: 2nd in Smash Pit (a.k.a Redemption Bracket)

Match: (Disregard the disrespectful commentators) (The youtube comments are a nice read though for some) -
.

I've been watching my stream matches a lot over the time since I competed at Smash Fight Club and I really could not find a moment where I performed exceptionally well. I've been at it replaying moments where I did stuff wrong and constantly pausing to see what moves I should not use when I get punished, my rolling habits, etc. I also asked the Lucas Discord for help with the match so I'll just jot down here the collected observation from me and the Discord Group.

Notes I have collectlively gathered for my set:
  • Do not play on Battlefield like it is Final Destination; make use of the platforms
  • Learn to punish Gravitational Pull
  • Watch my percent and mix up my ledge options, getting pummled and thrown off stage is what brought the Rosalina player back in the game
  • DO NOT challenge Rosalina when she is above me while I land, fair never lands and I always ate an f or and up smash; instead do my best to drift towards safety
  • Break the habit of air dodging low to the stage
  • Go in on Rosalina and do not play as a zoner all game; utilize short hop fast fall fairs as an approach when appropiate
  • Do my best not to lean on magnet hands when a smash attack is charged in my face XD
Any other advice or habits you guys notice would be appreciated. If this is not the right thread for feedback, I will cover my own back and post the video in the Lucas video thread.

This thread seems to be a little dead, I figure I'll try to revive it a bit.

I've picked Lucas a secondary to cover yoshi MUs I don't like, and for now I think he's been doing a decent job. There are MUs he doesn't cover very well, but at least do better than Yoshi.

So, on to business. Those are the first tournament sets I used Lucas, and I would like some observations or advice about my gameplay.

Those ones are pretty recent, they're against a diddy kong player. He sent me to losers 1-2 but I managed to beat him in Losers Finals 3-0 later, I used only lucas in both sets.

Set 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqh7355d5wk

Set 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERl5bsgDLIs

This one is from last month, against a Meta Knight player. I used Ness in the first match and Lucas in the rest of the set. I lost 1-3 but I felt like I could have done better and that I should stick to Lucas the next time I face any meta knight. It seems like the key factor in this set where how well he was able to take some of my stocks by edgeguarding.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH1uwS7LHE4

That's all for now. I plan on posting more videos in the future if I receive advice.
