Paper Mario: The Thousand Year is the definition of my childhood (that, and Mario Kart Double Dash). I'd love to see this guy in Smash, and the moveset potential here is nuts. I do think he'll sit in the Mario Spin-Offs group though, since I believe he's second party (Intelligent Systems made the games I think).

Moveset and other stats:
[collapse=Paper Mario Moveset]

Stats and Attributes
I'm envisioning a character who's really light, and the attacks don't pack a huge punch. Paper Mario, instead, relies on combos to go places. To show off the Action Commands, each of his attacks can be cancelled into another upon landing them (like Lucario in Project M). This makes up for his lack of overall strength because he's now a combo savvy character.

Weight: 78 - He's a 2D character like Mr. Game and Watch, so he should weigh around the same.
Walk Speed: 1.3 - A little faster than Mr. Game and Watch since he doesn't walk frame by frame.
Dash Speed: 1.6 - Same reason as above
Run Speed: 1.7 - Again, same as above
Air Speed - 1.35 - Faster than Yoshi. It makes sense since he's literally a piece of paper.
Falling Speed - 1.35 - A little faster than Jigglypuff, due to being a piece of paper.

Moveset
Jab - Paper Mario sticks out his hand. A one hit jab that comes out very fast.

Dash Attack - Paper Mario runs and spins his hammer around him while doing so

UTilt: Spike Helmet Sticker - Paper Mario applies a Spike Helmet sticker to himself, and spins once
FTilt: Sombrero Sticker - Paper Mario pulls out a sombrero and sticks it in front of him
DTilt: Tail Sticker - Paper Mario applies a tail sticker to himself, and attacks with a sweeping tail strike around him before the sticker falls off

USmash: Hammer Throw - Paper Mario charges and throws his hammer skyward
FSmash: Power Smash - Paper Mario charges for a hammer smash. Has a 50% of having no added effect, a 25% chance of burn, 15% chance of freeze and 10% chance of causing sleep
DSmash: Quake Hammer - Similar animation to the FSmash, but anyone in the immediate range of the attack will trip 50% of the time.

Neutral Special: Charge - Paper Mario charges for an attack. His next attack will deal more damage and will have more range.
Side Special: Paper Tube - Paper Mario rolls into a tube and slides in the direction he's facing. Can be used for recovery purposes.
Up Special: Spring Jump - Paper Mario crunches down and springs upwards. Has a lot of range. Opponents hit on the upward portion of the move will be spiked.
Down Special: Dimension Flip - The box appears around Paper Mario and he flips dimensions. He can't move while in the dimension and the move only lasts for a shorter time than Dimensional Cape.

Grabs: Paper Mario pulls out Thoreau who he throws to grab.
UThrow: Very similar to DK's Cargo Throw. He does something like this in Super Paper Mario.
FThrow: Paper Mario throws the opponent forward
BThrow: Paper Mario throws the opponent downward
DThrow: Paper Mario throws the opponent downward and smacks them with his hammer

We can also call the Spot Dodge "Close Call".

On the Paper Mario stage, Paper Mario's partners from the first two games will be sitting in the audience. They can be activated with a codec call.[/collapse]

I wanted to show off materials from all four games. Partners aren't included because I wanted the codec call to exist for Paper Mario due to the unique personality that most of them have.
Love your moveset, though I would've incorporated less hammer attacks that were similar and used the spin dash from Paper Mario 1 as the dash attack but incorporating attacks from each game is GENIUS! :)

Right, that Spin Dash thing from Mario Mario 64. That makes way more sense.

In fact, I may post my own Paper Mario moveset later today with some of my ideas, I'm looking forward to the critiques :)

I wonder what metal paper mario would look like

Paper Mario should be the only playable character with a unique metal appearance (like how Yoshi has a unique shield) - his overall colour would go darker and he would become "shiny" (like when you get a foil Pokemon card). It'd still have the exact same effect as it does for everyone else but it'd be a nice visual touch to make his character stand out a little bit more.

Do you guys think Paperize could fit into a Paper Mario moveset?

Ok guys here goes my moveset, which has partial inspiration from ThatWasPeachy and I will mark the inspired moves with this: *

Paper Mario

Special Attacks:
Neutral B- Superguard [If timed right you get a move similar to Marth and Ike's Counter with PM's respective animation]
Side B- Shell Toss [PM jumps on either Koops's or Kooper's shells quickly and they act like a normal Green Shell, only they have a boomerang effect]
Up B- Spring Jump* [You must charge it up until PM is fully folded]
Down B- Bomb Buddy [PM sets down either Boomer, who can be picked up and thrown, or Bombette( or Bobbery), who will run across the stage at Bombchu like speeds and eventually either of the three options will blow up if left alone]

Standard Attacks:
Neutral A- One normal hammer swing, then one horizontal swing
Side Tilt- Vivian is summoned and does her Shade Fist
Down Tilt- PM pulls a sticker from the ground and his arms do the damage
Up Tilt- PM summons Lakilester(aka Spike) and he holds a Spiny Egg above his head, causing damage
Dash Attack- PM does a Spin Dash that has a similar damage pattern to Olimar's cartwheel

Smash Attacks:
Side Smash- Super/Ultra Hammer
Down Smash- Tube Roll* hits to the right first, then the left
Up Smash- An item appears above PM's head and the longer the charge, the more damage the item does (uncharged=Dried Shroom, partly charged= Courage Shell, Fully Charged= Pow Block)

Aerial + Recovery Attacks:
Neutral Air- Jump Attack, a gimmick where if your feet are near someone's head, you do damage
Back Air- PM does his Belly Flopesque stylish move and his feet do the damage
Down Air- PM does a Spin Jump (Ground Pound)
Forward Air- Parakarry does a Sky Dive or Shell Shot which do the same damage (is done to the right)
Downed Attack- PM starts to get up, then jumps to his feet with his whole body doing damage
Edge Attack- PM uses his hammer while getting up from the edge with one hand

Grabs:
PM uses Thoreau for his ranged grab*
Grab Attack- Thoreau punches the opponent in the stomach
Forward Throw- PM throws the opponent slightly forward, then Watt comes in and shocks 'em
Back Throw- PM dimensionally flips and does damage to the opponent in the 3rd dimensions, and sends the fighter flying backwards*
Down Throw- PM uses Kersti to try to Paperize the opponent on the ground, the pressure then sends the enemy flying
Up Throw- PM carries the opponent like DK*

Taunts:
-PM does his hat fastening like his victory pose
-PM gives a thumbs up like his victory pose
-PM's Pixls come and dance like the end of a chapter

Also codecs from Goomario, Goombella, and Tippi would be cool*

One thing for Paper Mario's codecs would be talking about HP, Attack and Defense.

Like HP being the minimum percent at which Paper Mario can KO his opponent in question.

Attack being the maximum percent the opponent can do.

Defense being their weight aka knockback resistance.

What stage do you guys think would best fit Paper Mario? I'd have to say the battle stage from The Thousand Year Door, or maybe something from Super Paper Mario.

Only problem I'd have is the similarities to the new boxing ring and Smashville, even though I REALLY want the Thousand Year Old Door stage
EDIT: then again, that may not be such a bad thing...

Glitz Pit would be awesome but that's already kinda like the boxing ring.

So is Sammer Kingdom.

Maybe Toad Town? Fight on the roofs of houses.

I just want this soundtrack in the game please Sakurai. It's like the Xenoblade for my 12 year old self.

Not only the ttyd stage would be very good but you can also implement some hazards (like bucket or the audience trowing object) add this music and it's perfect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EhA1L5yXHI

this is btw one of my best boss fight song I ever heard I can even have the feel of it when I'm listening on my pc while not playing the game this music speaks by himself

Can we all agree that everyone here who supports Paper Mario wants him more than Toad, Waluigi, and even Bowser Jr.?

I dunno if I'd say that... Toad is my main man in terms of a 5th Mario rep, because of his timelessness and his ever-growing role in the canon Mario series, but Paper Mario is probably my number 2 because although I don't think he's as deserving at face value, he could definitely do some very interesting stuff.

Bowser Jr. would be my third choice, and Waluigi needs to stay as far away from a playable role as possible.

Toad is iconic, yes, but he is Toad. He would essentially redefine what it means to be a playable character. His inclusion would open doors to other characters like Starfy *shudders* But then again, there is Jigglypuff. For me, I had to decide between Paper Mario and Bowser Jr., and I had to choose Paper Mario simply because I think he has more to offer. But he is a close second, and if I reconsider, I could even put him above Paper Mario. And yes, Waluigi needs to stay as far as possible from Smash.

How does that logic follow through? He can do near enough anything that Mario or Luigi can do (see: Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii/U, Super Mario 3D Land) and to quote his Brawl trophy:

"Toad's incredible uprooting speed in Super Mario Bros. 2 is unrivaled, adding to the rumor of his superhuman strength... however out of place it might seem."

If speed and superhuman strength (as proven in Mario 2) don't make for a fitting playable character, then what does? :p

I can say that Paper Mario is my most wanted Mario rep.

I do like Toad, Dr. Mario (don't kill me) and Waluigi as well, and I won't really complain if they get in instead.

Definetly
Paper Mario is BY FAR my most wanted newcomer especially since I played TTYD. I had a long story with this game that lead me to glitch hunting (that's how I got my avatar)

I would be fine bowser jr but not sure for toad is the guy that is supposed to protect peach is allready reprentated by actually protecting her in her neutral b? I don't hate him but I'm not sure about his inclusion

We've been over this to death but Paper Mario shouldn't be a "Super Mario" rep because he isn't a "Super Mario" character. To compare him to Bowser Jr., Waluigi, and Toad is just strange. And as I always say, I personally find that, regardless whatever "rep" he is, he brings much more to the roster and the game in its entirety, opening up a large array of PM content possibilities into Smash.

Dr. Mario is its own spin-off series but he was counted as a Mario character.

Note that I say "shouldn't". At any rate, I'm not too hot on comparing Paper Mario's SSB4 addition to a last minute clone addition to Melee, the latter not adding to Smash with its series (with a lot less potential in the regard relatively speaking, but I digress) nor putting much time and effort into him, let alone making any distinction with the character's presence (which was their intent of course).

Agree but please use his battle victory theme in ttyd as victory music that'd be great

I made a thread earlier without seeing this so I'll just copy pasta my post over here without any edits.

I'm sorry if there is already a Paper Mario thread, I don't see it. Most of the threads in this section compose of a characters chances of appearing or in a form of wishlist.

I'm feeling a moveset thread could be a fresh feel for us.Now then, lets look at the franchise of Paper Mario(I haven't played Sticker Star but I grasp the concept. However, because of this I will not be using Sticker Star potential movesets).

Use of items, badges, star power, jumping, and hammer prowess. He also has a pethora of partners from his previous games.

I won't comprise an entire moveset so you guys have room to think up your moves as well.

Neutral A(Standard attack)
-Bow(Paper Mario 64), consecutive slaps.

Forward Smash
-Ultra Hammer. Mario takes aim and spins his hammer. Initial hit has strong hitbox, the rest of it does multi hit(Young Links Up B).

Up B
-Parakarry/Yoshi. Carried high into the air. Acts like Snakes Cypher. If you press B again while flying, Yoshi will throw an egg and Parakarry will perform a shell dive(Mario Kart Blue Shell without explosion).

Down B
-Watt. Watt smashes the floor making anyone within range paralyzed for a set period.

Down Throw

-Goombella and Goombario will headbonk into the ground while Mario holds his opponent.

Taunt1
-Mario turns to the screen and wags his finger.

I think that PM's specials should almost exclusively focus on his partners, and add a bit of variety to the playstyle. Let me explain a bit:

Up Special - Parakarry or Spike quickly flit out of Mario's pocket and carry him up by a solid enough distance and then jump back into his pocket.
Side Special - Mario bounces on Kooper or Koops's shell and sends them forward. If Koops, Mario can hold Koops in place for a little bit before sending him back.
Down Special - Bow (Air) or Vivian (Ground) grab Mario and make him intangible/Underground for a bit to avoid an attack.

Or something like that.

But it's the Paper Mario stage that REALLY shows off the companions. They're all there in the background (possibly Smashville-esque but maybe more inclusive). Once in a while, Flurrie will come out and blow the characters around, Sushie will spit water on the ground to make it slick, Bombette & Bobbery will randomly explode or it'll get real dark and only Watt's area is lit. And then you can have a Shadow Moses-type explanation of all the enemy characters on the Paper Mario stage with Goombario or Goombella using Tattle in the background.

It's such a longshot but Odin above wouldn't it be awesome?

Neutral Special - Hammer Throw. Could work similar to Snake's grenades.
Up Special - Paper Airplane. Can glide ala Meta Knight.
Side Special - He kicks a shell of one of his partners to the side he is facing.
Down Special - He uses one of his bomb partners as an explosive attack.

Smashes should use his hammer and I think his dash attack should be his Spin Attack.
I'd give him the unique feature of if his footstool jumps connects, it does 2% damage. Maybe give that to Mario and Luigi too, as all three are known for their ability to kill enemies by jumping on them after all!

Final Smash should definitely use the Star Power attack from the original Paper Mario. The attack focuses on one target and then strikes them out of the stage.

Wherever his stage is set at, he should definitely get a special taunt like Snake and the Star Fox team on his home stage. Have Goombario or Goombella tattle whoever is on the stage!

I LOVE this character, definitely my #1 most wanted newcomer!
Here is my take on Paper Mario's moveset:
I envision him as a mid-weight, high-jumping character. He should be a tad faster than Mario and have average fall speed. A lot of people say he should be floaty, but I disagree - yes, he is made of paper, but I'd prefer him to feel like he does in the games. I'd say he should be a bit lighter than Luigi.
Paper Mario's attacks aren't about power, they are about combo building. He mostly wields his hammer for his attacks, but his specials utilize his partners. I specifically chose to only use the partners from the first game - they are the most memorable. Think of it like how they gave Pokemon Trainer the Gen 1 starters as opposed to the newest ones of the time.
Anyways, onto the moveset itself.

Paper Mario is the master of hammers, so naturally most of his moves reflect that.
Jab: Hammer ~ Paper Mario attacks by thrusting his hammer forward. Does 6%.
Forward Tilt: Hammer Throw ~ Paper Mario tosses his hammer; arcs in a similar way to Yoshi's egg. Does 9% if it hits.
Up Tilt: Hammer Upper ~ Paper Mario swings his hammer upwards, knocking foes upwards. Does 7%.
Down Tilt: Hammer Thump ~ Paper Mario swings the hammer and slams the ground - his most iconic move from the game. Does 8%.
Dash Attack: Spin Attack ~ Paper Mario twirls around like he does in Paper Mario 64. This doesn't deal much damage, but has surprisingly nice knock-back. Does 3%.

Up Smash: Spring Jump ~ Paper Mario takes a few seconds to coil into a spring (he is vulnerable while doing this), and then launches himself upwards. It is much like the Super Dedede Jump, but instead of attack foes on the way down, Paper Mario's highest damage is on the way up. If a foe is struck by Paper Mario as he is launched upwards, they will be dealt 10% damage and are quickly whisked into the air. Note that this move does not function as a recovery, as it can only be initiated if Paper Mario is on the ground.
Side Smash: Power Smash ~ Paper Mario slams the ground with great power. This deals a nice amount of damage and will occasionally stun opponents. Does 11%.
Down Smash: Quake Hammer ~ Paper Mario turns to face the camera and pounds the ground with his hammer, causing tremors around where he stands. Anybody near him at the time will take damage and will trip. 10% if directly under the hammer, 5% from just the tremor.

Neutral Aerial: Twirl ~ Paper Mario spins around in the air, dealing low damage but good knock-back. Does 4%.
Up Aerial: Tornado Spin ~ Paper Mario spins quite rapidly, lifting himself up a bit. Not the best recover, but it can work in many situations. Does 5%.
Back Aerial: Hammer Flip ~ Paper Mario does a half backflip with his hammer extended. This move can fling foes behind him. Does 8%.
Forward Aerial: Hammer Slam ~ Paper Mario swings his hammer of his head and falls downwards for a few seconds, spiking any opponents caught under his hammer to the ground. Does 10%
Down Aerial: Ground Pound ~ Paper Mario does his iconic ground pound move. It deals good damage and knock-back to anybody caught underneath it. Does 12%.

Paper Mario's grabs are quite unique and require a different approach.
Grab: Paper Grab ~ Paper Mario latches onto opponent, turning them into a sheet of paper (the opponent's appearance doesn't change, it looks like it is printed on a piece of paper)
Pummel: Crumple ~ Paper Mario squishes the newly paper-ified opponent a little bit with each press of the button, slowly crumpling them into a ball, as well as doing 1% of damage with each crinkle. It takes 7-8 presses to turn them into a crumpled ball of paper. They must be a paper ball or they cannot be thrown. The challenge is crumpling them up before the escape your grasp.
Forward Throw: Trash Toss ~ Paper Mario hurls the crumpled opponent forward. Good for tossing off ledges. If they hit the ground, they are dealt 9%.
Back Throw: Litterbug ~ Paper Mario carelessly tosses the crumpled opponent over his shoulder. When they hit the ground they are dealt 8% damage and are un-crumpled.
Up Throw: Trash Bounce~ Paper Mario flings the crumpled opponent into the air. When they hit the ground they take 10% damage and are immediately un-crumpled and un-papered.
Down Throw: Paper Crush ~ Paper Mario slams the crumpled opponent on the ground and proceeds to squash their crumpled remains with his hammer. When Paper Mario initially slams them down it does about 5% damage - but his hammer does 10% with great knockback, and also un-crumples them.
The opponent can automatically un-crumple themselves by mashing buttons, if they ever need to save themselves from impending paper doom.

Now, his specials is where it gets exciting.
Neutral Special: Partner Cycle ~ Paper Mario cycles through his partners. (Goombario, Kooper, Bombette, Parakarry, Lady Bow, Watt, Sushie, and Lakilester)
Side Special: Partner Side* ~ Paper Mario's current partner uses their side attack.
Up Special: Partner Up* ~ Paper Mario's current partner uses their up attack.
Down Special: Partner Down* ~ Paper Mario's current partner uses their down attack.
Final Smash: Star Beam ~ Paper Mario's summons all seven Star Spirits and unleashes a powerful beam of star energy that can easily KO opponents. It cannot be aimed like Lucario's Aura Storm - it is always a vertical beam, but it can be moved back and forth. If an opponent is touching the beam, they will be dealt 3% damage every second. The beam is also partially solid, it works as a wall, so by moving back and forth you can push characters off of some stages.

Taunt 1: Faces the screen and gives a thumbs up.
Taunt 2: Turns sideways (paper thin) and then normal again.
Taunt 3: Changes depending on the partner.*

*Wondering about the partners and their abilities? Well here they are.
Paper Mario will always have a partner closely following him. It is hard for Mario and his partner to be separated; even if a partner falls of a ledge they will teleport back to Mario. They only way to kill a partner is by attacking it (as they are immune to any stage hazards such as spikes). A partner is easier to kill than Nana (from the Ice Climbers), but Paper Mario has eight to go through so he should be good for most of the battle. The partners can be cycled through by using Paper Mario's neutral special - this is achieved fairly quickly and uses the 'jumping out of Mario' animation used in the game. If all the partners die, Paper Mario is basically screwed - so managing your partners' health is of upmost importance when playing as Paper Mario. Its important to note that healing items affect both Paper Mario and his partners.

Goombario:
Side Special: Headbonk ~ Goombario jumps in the air and lands a short distance from Paper Mario, damaging any opponents in that spot. Does 8%.
Up Special: Multibonk ~ Goombario repeatedly bonks Paper Mario, launching him into the air (recovery move). Does 5% to opponents touched by this move.
Down Special: Charge ~ Goombario takes a few seconds to charge up. Goombario will have a red tint while charged, which wears off after a few seconds. If a headbonk is achieved while charged, it will deal 12% instead with higher knockback.
Special Taunt: Goombario grins and hops on the spot twice.

Kooper:
Side Special: Shell Toss ~ Kooper climbs into his shell, and Paper Mario kicks him forwards in the direction he is currently facing. Does 9%.
Up Special: Dizzy Shell ~ Mario sits on Kooper's shell, which spins around rapidly, lifting Mario and Kooper into the air (recovery move). This also has a slight vacuum effect on nearby opponents. Does 6% to opponents touched by this move.
Down Special: Power Shell ~ Kooper goes into his shell, and does a more powerful but less ranged version of 'shell toss'. Does 12%.
Special Taunt: Kooper smiles and waves at the screen.

Bombette:
Side Special: Bomb ~ Bombette lights her fuse and walks a few steps forward before exploding. Good damage and high knockback explosion. Does 10%.
Up Special: Power Bomb ~ Bombette explodes right underneath Paper Mario, launching him upwards (recovery move). Anybody caught in the explosion will be dealt 8% damage.
Down Special: Body Slam ~ Bombette Lunges forward, slamming into the ground and damaging opponents. Does 7%.
Special Taunt: Leans forward slightly and winks at the screen.

Parakarry:
Side Special: Sky Dive ~ Goes into shell and swoops down from above. Does 9%.
Up Special: Air Lift ~ Grabs Paper Mario by the arms and lifts him upwards. Controllable like Pit's Wings of Icarus, but a bit slower (recovery move). Does 2% damage to anybody touched by Parakarry's wings.
Down Special: Shell Shot ~ Climbs into shell and spikes down from above, dealing a good amount of damage. Does 11%.
Special Taunt: Takes a letter out of his bag, reads it, and then puts it back.

Lady Bow:
Side Special: Smack ~ Floats forward a bit and slaps opponent. Does 3%, can be spammed pretty easily.
Up Special: Fan Smack ~ Sweeps Paper Mario up into the air with her fan (recovery move). Will also sweep up any opponents. Anybody swept by her fan (including Mario) take 2% damage.
Down Special: Outta Sight ~ Makes herself and Paper Mario invisible. They cannot move while invisible, but cannot be seen or damaged and can be walked through. This lasts a maximum of 8 seconds.
Special Taunt: Winks and makes a kissy face while fanning herself.

Watt:
Side Special: Electro Dash ~ Charges herself up and rushes forward, electrifying anybody in her path. Does 8%.
Up Special: Turbo Charge ~ Electrifies Paper Mario from below and launches him upwards (recovery move). Does 5% to anybody who touches watt at this time.
Down Special: Mega Shock ~ Zaps opponents nearby. Does not do damage, but can paralyze opponents.
Special Taunt: Flashes brightly, lighting up the stage for a brief second.

Sushie:
Side Special: Squirt ~ Sprays water in the direction she is facing; functions just like FLUDD or Water Gun. Does 1% damage for every two seconds of being sprayed.
Up Special: Tidal Wave ~ Summons a large wave from below that lifts herself and Paper Mario upwards. (recovery move). The wave can also lift opponents. Does 3%.
Down Special: Belly Flop ~ Flops onto the ground below her, damaging opponents nearby. Does 7%.
Special Taunt: Smiles and flops at the ground three times.

Lakilester:
Side Special: Spiny Flip ~ Tosses a spiny in front of him. The spiny walks around, dealing 5% to anybody who touches it, until it disappears after around 10 seconds.
Up Special: Cloud Nine ~ Paper Mario climbs into Lakilester's cloud and is lifted upwards. (recovery move).
Down Special: Hurricane ~ Blows a gust of wind around him that can push opponents away.
Special Taunt: Grins and waves at the screen.

Series: Paper Mario
Series Symbol: His Hammer
Victory Fanfare: An orchestral version of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mdpDdwNRUg
Victory pose 1: Jumps up in the air, and then turns to face the screen and gives a thumbs up.
Victory pose 2: Closes his eyes and wags his finger at the screen.
Victory pose 3: Adjusts his hat and then gives the 'peace' sign to the screen.

If he does a taunt on a Paper Mario stage, he will have Goombario use 'Tattle' on an opponent. It will be like the Codec messages that Snake had in Brawl - complete with using the exact textbox and font from Paper Mario.

EDIT: Added more stuff

So that concludes my approach at Paper Mario in Super Smash Bros.
I'd like some feedback. This is the first moveset I've ever made, and I am not an expert at the metagame, so I need people to tell me whether some moves are too weak or too powerful.

Still up Peach's dress.

Honestly this is how I feel. In an ideal world we'd get a new Mario rep alongside Paper Mario, who I do feel is deserving of some spotlight too.

Obviously I'm rooting for Toad, but since TTYD was one of my favourite games of all time, I really want some kind of representation for old flat face.

Keep Waluigi as an assist trophy though; he's one of my favourites.

That would be incredibly awesome.

I'll still hope that Glitz Pit is the stage, but to be honest; the partners are what I loved most about the series. I was kinda disappointed when they were removed in later instalments. Worst decision for Paper Mario in my very very biased opinion.

I just wanted to tell an idea about his aerial move what if he uses the move he does when you get a stylish in TTYD? like backflip or figures that would be good

I don't know if you guys look at the Make Your Own Challenger Approaching Screen thread, but I had an idea for SSB4 having character-specific APPROACHING screens, and Paper Mario was one of the ones I threw together for it.

For Paper Mario:

This is the next chapter screen from the N64 Paper Mario game. Got his silhouette, the text in the original font and everything.. I think it's a cool idea with some real potential and PM is one that could really utilize it well.

I think Paper Mario's down B should toggle through three to four partners. The partner determines the B and side special.

Ok this post will be VERY long since I'il state my opinion on the "another mario" counterargument so, I'il just put that in a spoiler
First of all, even if he won't be a clone (this thread allready established why) there's still one counterargument that makes some people not interested in his inclusion: he is a reincarnation of mario so it seems too "similar" (you'il understand why I placed the quotes). This is undersandable. HOWEVER, I think that the way he looks make him a very great addition instead of an edited character here's my point:
if you have played at least one of the first 2 games (especially TTYD), you'il understand what I mean. I tought alot about his inclusion and I figured why the counterargument doesn't necessarily matters in a sense. See, one of the reason I just LOVE paper mario (I talk about the serie) is the fact that the environment in those game are very unique. tbh, when I played ttyd, it feels like a comic it was very special and interesting way of playing that just match perfectly with the rpg experience. I'm not the only one who believe this here's the trophy description from melee
EDIT: I had an image but it doesn't work but just look on internet for the complete description (you can still understand my point without it)
read the last sentence "What the visuals lack in realism, they more than make up for unique artistry" This sentence truly explains my point it's actually one of the big reason of why I loved so much TTYD (and so the first game) the graphics, the music and more is very unique and those game deserves creedits for that. Now I think you're starting to get where I'm getting. I will not deny it he IS a character based on mario so is dr mario BUT, that does NOT mean that he is just the same mario in paper version. Here's an example: did you liked tloz wind waker? I did but the bigest reason I did was it's art style and even if I knew I was playing at link, it felt that it was not the link we all know it felt something else. I'il even go as far to say that master hand is an example of this feeling he's based of a kirby game but the way he's made and the way he's in game felt not like a boss from kirby. But what does it have to do with paper mario's chance? it means that his design does NOT feel like mario even tought he IS based around him but instead it feels like a NEW mario not mario pape version. I know toon link ended up being a clone but let's just forget his moveset just take his design and stats do you feel it's not THE link? that's what I felt when I played wind waker like I said (alltought, come to think of it, the brawl design doesn't represent him it fit the brawl art style but not the character why he's outfit is pure green?) So to wrap this up: imagine toon link with his design but a completly different moveset (mayabe using items from his game like deku leaf or something) would you like that character? I would and paper mario is the same case but he has an advantage : alot of unique moveset potential (something that would actually make him stand out like partner or paper ability) and imo the best thing that can make a character like g&w awsome is how well the moveset and design represent the character himself most of the characters in the series feels like that and some doesn't (brawl ganondorf is one of them) So that's it paper mario isn't a case of dr mario but, in my words, a "toon link case decloned and completly different" case

short version: it is a "toon link decloned and completly different" caseI would like some feedback since it's the first time I posted a very long opinion and if most people think it would be pertinent, I would like this to be added to the op please thanks for reading I will appreciate feedbacks

I agree with what you're getting at. Toon Link is just Link with a different art style. Sure, he can be decloned to have a completely different moveset, but he'd probably still not be bringing anything particularly new or unique to the table. Paper Mario is more than just Mario with a different art style. There's no delicate way of putting it, so I'll be blunt:

HE'S A PIECE OF PAPER FFS.

He's literally a piece of paper, what veteran or potential newcomer can boast that? Just think about the potential and possibilities that brings from visual and gameplay point of view. If him being a piece of paper is used to it's fullest, if the gimmick is milked as much as possible. then Paper Mario could bring something very special and different to the table that no other character can bring.

I agree with what you said I actually wanted to say the second paragraph at the end of my post but I didn't found a way to say it and I allready said that this thread allready answered the question of being a clone so I didn't put it
but let me tell you about your last paragrah this is the "completly different" that I meant in my short version it's basicly the advantage he has over toon link (yes you can fill in something that link don't but like you said it won't be enought) thanks for the feedback I think I should add this in my post also, I only considered the character in my post not the moveset since it was discused allready so that's why I didn't talk about it

Had an idea for some things PM could do.

The badges were an important part of the first 2 PM games. it would be hard to implement all of them in, or even some, but I think it would be possible.

If you recall, there was a mechanic in brawl where you could jump off opponents heads when you approached them from the top. I was thinking that when Paper Mario does this, it could cause an effect from some of the Jump badges.

For example, it would sometimes activate Shrink Stomp, reducing attack power for a short time. Sometimes it would activate Dizzy Stomp, which could result in random misses or stumbling of the opponent for a short time. It could even be Power Stomp, which could have a spike or meteor effect.

The same can be done with the hammer. If PM gets a chargeable hammer ability, it could result in several things happening based on the badges when the move becomes fully charged. For example, a Super Hammer attack where he spins and knocks opponents into each other could be implemented, where getting knocked into someone/something could result in big knockback.

Some moves:

Up-B: Paracarry lifts him slighty and moves him forward, anyone caught in front will be kicked by Mario.

Side-B: throws a hammer in an arc similar to the axe in castlevania, can be briefly charged to do a low bounce off the ground once.

B: Lady Bow charges the slap, and can be released to cause good damage, with no knockback

Down-B: Bombette/ Bobbery gets pulled out and explodes after a few seconds. Can be held to diminish some time or thrown overhead. The bomb walks forward slightly and explodes on contact or after the time is done.

Dash: quickly rolls up into a tube and rolls into the opponents feet.

AAA: jab, kick, hammer smack.

Side a: side hammer swing, spins opponent and knocks them back.

Down a: kooper appears slightly behind mario and slides in front.

Up a: spike helmet, or goombario jumps up and bonks tge person above. He comes back down and dissapears when he hits ground.

F smash: hammer. Can get up to 2 additional strikes if action command is done correctly.

D smash: spin/dizzy attack

U smash: Holds up Watt and shocks the player above. Lightning bolts go to his sides to initially protect, but has huge lag

Final Smash: 2 ideas.
Showstopper: large stars rip through the back of the level like its a canvas causing massive damage to those hit. 6 stars total.

Tattle: PM jumps off the screen like Snake and has a time limit to select as many opponents as possible. After that, the Star beam from the first game blasts the opponents selected.

Paper Mario is my most wanted newcomer! Expect me to be posting a moveset soon.

Edit: I honestly believe that Paper Mario would be perfectly fine fighting without his helpers, so my moveset will not include helpers. Parakarry is a pretty good idea for an up B though.

I don't think his moveset should use them. His moveset should be based around his being made of paper and the abilities he's able to perform because of it. If it isn't then the big gimmick of the character would be completely wasted. No other character who's ever going to be in Smash Bros will be made of paper, that's why his moveset's got to make the most of it.

Just because Mr. Game and Watch is 2D doesn't mean his entire moveset is based on that idea though...
