This thread is absolutley ridiculous. From what I've seen anyone who actually made sense has gone completely ignored here.
Let me make it clear, I'm not taking a side for Super or Prime because I'm a god **** Metroid fan period.
Super Metroid in my personal opinion will forever be my favorite of the series, it set the stage for everything that was to come, and I love it way better then Prime. That said, I will be surprised if Prime gets no representation. And yes, it deserves it.
I don't know where the hell the rest of you Metroid fanboys were back when Prime came out, but I was pretty much ready to crap my pants. Why? Because we hadn't seen Samus in ten freaking years. I was weirded by the first person thing, but Miyamoto himself, the god of all things Nintendo, made Retro change the game from third-person to first-person. And really, I don't know how else you could play a 3D metroid. I think they made the right decison, those games were amazing. Besides, last I checked, the first Prime game had a ton of stuff from Super Metroid, the series went off and did its own thing, but it didn't forget what made Metroid amazing.
But, that's just my opinion. And I don't know who said sales don't matter, but whoever did, you're an idiot. I don't like to insult, but you're an idiot. As far as us gamers are concerned, it doesn't effect our opinions on gameplay. But if Prime did bad then it wouldn't have gotten a full-fledged series. It's because of Prime that Samus is finally getting attention again. And sales kinda tells Nintendo what the fans like. So enough with this "I think this is better, therefore it will happen my way" crap.
And as for ruining Samus? That's just stupid. From what I've seen she looks like a mesh of old and new. Her armor resembles her Melee suit but it has the same subtle differences from the Prime series. Her moveset looks the same, and who cares if her bombs aren't electrical? She plays like she always had, and if you're a Samus-user. That's not a bad thing, you can't ruin what works fine to begin with.
And for anyone referencing zero suit as a sign that Prime won't get representation, maybe you guys didn't play Prime 2 or 3, but Zero suit is in there, looking practically identical to her Smash counter-part.
So yeah, Norfair is from the older games, whatever, amazing games all around. Just looks like a new twist on the rising acid thing from the last two games. I'm sure Prime will get its fair due. a level or an assist or something. She already has the updated color scheme from the games and Zero Suit (which is from Zero Mission and the Prime games)
...and Dark Samus should be an alternate costume. Yeah I want her in the game, but I would prefer alternate costumes to clones, just one guys opinion.
