Gotta admit, I know nothing about Digimon. The only thing I do know is that evolutions (Digilutions?) aren't permanent and tend to radically change designs, more often than not. Also they tend to be all over the place in the various games? I do have an old Book though, which I got as a gift, which lists most (or all, dunno) Digimon from the old Adventures series. Sometimes I flip through it out of nostalgia.

It's a bit hard to explain but essentially a Digimon can become just about any other digimon with enough data, although each one has a "canon" line that is used if the Digimon's data is amplified with a Digivice/Tamer being present in place of regular data consumption. Course an Agumon isn't suddenly going to become Omnimon(still have to go through each step, Rookie->Champion->Ultimate->Mega, etc) but an Agumon could become say a Togemon IF and only if the right type of data is consumed. Some types of Digimon evolution don't follow this such as Digifuse, Spirit Evolution(which is a nother thing entirely) Slide Evolution, and Jogress/DNA evolution(which requires very specific digimon in sync rather than just any two-four digimon)

It leads me to believe that there’s this general mentality that linearity is “outdated” and that we need to “keep moving forward”. Open worlds are just another genre, I still don't understand why the mere thought of them seems to make your blood boil.
Games being too linear is in fact a problem. I hate it when games restrict my movement for the sake of a story, and I imagine I'm not the only one who feels that way.
I feel the same Way with Zelda every game right now is Openworld and that to the Max
Some issues just take a lot more time than others to resolve, but trust me, they will pass. You just need to stay on that horse and keep making your best attempt to do away with them.
