Ok, want to see is represented?Actually I think this is a good time to ask this
I'm currently in the planning stage of writing my fantasy novel and I do want to include a diverse cast of characters. It's not set in the real world although there are some cultures that are inspired by real world countries. So specifically for the black users in this thread, how would you want to see yourself represented?
I'm asking this here because i've been told consulting people of the demographics I want to represent is the best way to represent them well, and I don't know that many black people irl but I'd like some input on this
Just write us as normal characters that do normal everyday stuff.
A lot of media potrays us as gangbangers who old steal, ****, and pillage, and if it's not that then we're reserves to being comedic relief to the white man (and we're also unimportant too). And if it's not either of those two things, then we're just stereotypically black (as in excessive Urban culture and AAVE that feels like a out of touch white man wrote us).
Truth is, we're not a monolith. There are millions of black people in the world and we place has their own culture. All over the world, we mixed our culture with white culture thanks to colonization, and what you see now is black culture. Yes, AAVE, Hip-Hop and urban culture is relevant to black culture, but please keep in mind how you portray that. It's one thing if a black character uses AAVE and listens to hip-hop. It's another thing if that's their ONLY personality trait.
If you wanna get into oppression and social justice **** though, you definitely should get a 2nd opinion. A lor of white people try some black-white allegory and that **** flops hard because it's clear they don't know what they're talking about.
