Yakuza 0, Kingdom Hearts 2.8, Gravity Rush 2 and Tales of Berseria. All four games I waited ages to play and all four I was so stoked to have and all of them I got day 1. All of these games I've now came to hold in very high regard.
Yakuza 0 -
What was the most unsure to get ended up becoming one of my favourite series of all time. I wasn't in the crowd of "yo, it's ****in Japam GTA!" cause I have intelligence and I had dabbled in the series briefly. I mainly bought it since I wanted to get into more Sega games.
And how blown I was. Seeing both Kiryu and Maijima going through hell all because of a girl and an empty plot of land was amazing. The visuals, the music, characters and the over the top gameplay was poetry in motion. I fell in love and wanted more.
A special mention as well for Takuya Kuroda's performance as Kiryu who along with another performance here fully pulled me into Japanese voice acting and understanding great performances instead of just "jumble".
Kingdom Hearts 2.8 -
I've mentioned in the past how I've had a love/hate relationship with the series. Playing 0.2 was easily a love point for the series with that gameplay, the horde boss fight, the music (the menu theme is one of the best versions of Dearly Beloved) and a nice base for 3 with the animations. Dream Drop Distance (with that amazing gameplay and best cameos in the series) was a nice addition.
Prequel film was fine though.
Gravity Rush 2 - "Fall Again. A New Project from Team Gravity."
That was all from the TGS 2013 trailer to make me shout of joy. Gravity Rush is a game that holds a special place in my heart and the sequel with the ever amazing Kat as the heroine gave me more. The story while a mess at times gave us some of the best and most entertaining moments of the game but most of all it did one thing above and beyond few games have managed to do.
Flight. The sense of flight in this game is something that few have managed to do so perfectly without feeling overpowered. Flying around the twin cities of the World Pillar is one of my all time favourite moments from PlayStation and its games. The sense of wonder, the whimsical soundtrack, the beautiful French comic inspired art style and an ever lovable cast of characters who still shine better than some of the gaming giants present leads. Kat still to this day leaves a stronger impression on myself than the likes of Aloy or Ellie with her strong sense of justice, ever lovable sarcasm and trying to find out who she is in this topsy turvy world (literally). Without Kat (and Ruby Rose from RWBY) my character Sakura would never have became who she is in her present form.
Play Gravity Rush 1 and 2 guys. I can't stress it enough.
Tales of Berseria - First of all, I was not a fan of the battle system. Criticism over.
After playing and loving Zestiria I was left wondering about how Berseria turned out.................then I saw the characters and narrative. I was ecstatic but a bit worried.
"IDK know if Tales can pull a great narrative after how messy the previous game was." I was wrong.
What I got was one of my favourite stories of all time in gaming. A girl now cursed with a vampire arm seeking nothing more than the head of her relative for murdering her younger brother............who has now become a warrior pope. Velvet Crowe is one of the best Tales protagonists and Rina Sato's performance (the second example) also pulled me into how great Japanese voice acting can be. She has a badass design and a coolness to it.
With a great theme of emotion vs reason, one of the best protagonist/antagonist relationships, one of my favourite scenes in gaming never featuring the main character (just Eizen and Rokurou having a drink but something about it blew my mind) it's my favourite revenge story outside of Assassin's Creed II.
Oh and the game is far, far better than Arise. Just saying.
