Alriiiight, break still not over, but I got something something good!
osby
I finally managed to finish OFF! Took longer than I expected, mostly because I got distracted by alot of stuff, but today I played the game in full, annnnnnnnnd....
It's quite a tricky one to
judge (haha) honestly.
On one hand, playing this game wasn't exactly fun. It's a very, very basic RPG, there isn't alot of complexity to it and all around, the most you do is raise your stats to be bigger each time & then hit the enemies with your strongest spells/attack. There's poison & other debuff you gotta worry later on, but all around, barring a few moment here and there, the battle system is just not really fun. And unlike Hylics 1 - which also lack of depth - , OFF last much longer the random encounter & infinite enemies respawn make it quite tiring when you're trying to do puzzles and/or backtracking. (enemies in Hylics 1 dies forever & can be avoided on the world map to compare, Hylics 2 as respawning enemies, but you can sitll avoid them on the map, especially since it's a 3D games with lots of options to do so, plus, ya know, the actual combat is more fun/interesting)
The graphisms (not the art style mind you) are also quite mixed all around, while they do a great job at making the world of OFF feel so...off.
ahem
After a couple of hours playing it, the veryyyyyyyyyyy simple environement kinda take you a bit off the ride, especially when, again, you're trying to backtrack or do complicated puzzles.
I'm not one to care too much about graphics I say, 8 bits, high polygon and everything between those are all good to me so long as the game make whatever style it goes with work, and again, OFF pixel arts does work very well in a few areas, notably for the battle sprites, dialogues sprites & some of the late areas in the game. I don't hate it or think it's even bad, but the world design didn't work too much for me, which I hope make sense.
And lastly, some of those puzzles really made my dummy brain work out like crazy. Which is like, frustraling good, 'cuz when I found out the solutions to alot of those puzzles, I did got some "Ohhh!" moment & glad I didn't found out the solutions. Sadly, there's like endgame 1-2 puzzles I did look up online to know what the deal was about, but outside those, I appreciate that I had to think really hard for some of those...even if my brain really wish I didn't try.
With that all said, while those nitpicks I had definitly won't make OFF one of my favourite game ever. I can still certainly say that I'm glad I played it all by myself & not by watching a LP or the like. You can tell games like LISA, Undertale, Oneshot, Omori & many others were influenced by this game just as much as YN & Earthbound did too, and I went to highlight a few points that really standed out to me:
1) The musics, my god, like countless games like Undertale, YN, Hylics and etc.., the music really carry alot of the ambience & idendity OFF as. It can be really catchy, really weird, sad, ominious,...it's really varied what i'm saying. It elevated alot of moment that would be otherwise quite boring due to the very simple world you go in with very simple overworld sprites that don't go too crazy. I definitly will relisten to the OST on occassion like I do with many games I love!
2) The characters & the story overall was really worth the rollercoaster. The characters all have something memorables about them that, no matter how much screen time they have, and the game really make you want to know more about them once they're done. Which is quite impressive, considering the numbers of actual good person in this cast can probably be counted on 1 hand. The Batter stoicness is quite standard by quirky weird RPG games, but his dubious intentions, glimpses of personalities & backstory make him very mysterious yet simple in a way. He isn't going to win any "Nice Bro" medal of the months for sure, but dang, was he such a good lead for a game like OFF, and his design is just iconic by how simple yet fitting it is.
While I won't go in depth with others, character like Zacharie, The Judge & The Guardians were definitly highlight too. Each of them bringing their own brand of weirdness & memorable moment to keep you guessing. With Zacharie notably being pretty funny & likeable for a shop character. Hope him & RE4 Merchand got to have some fun in crossover land.
I won't go too much into the story here due to alot of variants (notably the fact that's it's very late here and that i'm tired), but I say that it's definitly why peoples should try out OFF or at the very least, see a LP of it. I was able to play in it's original French version, which was really cool for someone like me who play alot of games in English these days. I will say it's not a story some folks may like due to the lore & world being pretty mysterious & basically leaving you imagine what could have happened for x or y to happen, but for me, I say it worked out really well, and I probably will think about it later on once I got some rest.
Finally
3) The art style
By that, I mean everything related to the drawings made by the devs.
I said before that the pixels art didn't do much for me, but by god, those weird ass drawing give this game so much idendity. Some of the enemies design are so out there, you can't help but keep fighting them even though the battle system isn't that fun. Even a simple cat or "human" like Judge and Batter respectivly look memorable thanks to the art style. While the musics & writting definitly help out alot, without this art style, I don't think OFF as a game would really hold up today. Kinda like Hylics 1, whose a game who is also veryyyy simple in lots of aspects, but the wonderful art style just make a otherwise short weird game very memorable & make oyu want ot try out just to see everything it got.
All ot say is, I'm probably gonna be looking up for alot of OFF fanarts for the next few days, just to see what artists could come off with those weird design that are very open to interpetions in places. Which I love too.
Briiiiiiiiiiief, I wanted to say some things like, (like how I might wanna replay it to do some of the bonus stuff like
The Purged Zone & the ending, including a puzzle that had some big ass Oneshot vibe), but i'm just too tired to explain any more of my thoughts. I'm sorry if this is quite confusin' & poorly written in soem areas, but I wanted to get my thoughts out now before I forget, didn't have the time or lost motivations. Especially since it's thanks to you, osby, that I finally gave this game a shot. I really wanted to finish it to talk with it with ya, and once I got some sleep. I be quite happy to talk about it some more if you're interested! If not tho, still, a huge thanks for recommending it to me!^w^
Oh and, now that I finished it:
Ya know I had to do it.
With that all said, idk what I play next, I got lots of options. So I see what come first, until then, thanks for reading all of this mess & hope you have a wonderful day!
