Granted, all but one of them are from Rare but what's up with blonde ponytails?

Ponytails convey character=girl. For simple cartoon animal designs meant for kids, it’s an easy shorthand. Not to say you couldn’t have a female character with any other hairstyle obviously, but y’know.

And blonde is a popular hair color. Especially for women.

If you have long hair then you put it up into a ponytail when you do anything really physical, and blond hair is kind of just the default hair color to a lot of westerners. Which I know has some horrible implications, but that’s just the way it is.

While I've never had any interest in these kinds of games or characters (though I did play classic Crash Bandicoot on the PS1), I can maybe think of a few reasons:

1. From a character design perspective, seeing as 3/4 of these characters have brown/orange color schemes, blonde works as a good complementary color. The fourth one there just looks weird, the hair should probably be white/light gray, but I imagine they all use blonde because of the distinct contrast it has with the fur.
2. Blonde hair is also, perhaps, in some ways more associated with women than men, especially if it's long. The long blonde hair communicates that these characters are girls, distinguishing them more clearly from their male counterparts.
3. Ponytails communicate that someone is sporty or athletic, which, well, fits with platformer games, which are some of the most athletic games there are. In the case of [Banjo's sister?], where she is clearly young, the twintails communicate that she's childlike or perky, as well as just being a more visually interesting hair design compared to a regular ponytail.
4. That kind of distinctly-modeled ponytail requires less animation/modelling work compared to long hair that falls downwards. That's why, especially when you go back to first and second generation 3D games (N64/GameCube eras), women had ponytails or bob-cuts 99% of the time, since long hair is much more difficult to model or animate (and still is). This is probably the real answer here.

Bugs and Daffy don’t have any hair, aside from a few tufts on their heads. But Lola has a full head of hair.

It’s just classic western character design.

Every single pair of Joycons that I've ever owned ended up with terrible drift so I bit the bullet and bought the Hori Split Pad Pro about a year ago. Haven't had a single issue with it yet even after constant use. Yeah, it's a bit of a shame that they're for portable mode only since they lack wireless functionality, but I have a Pro Controller for my TV needs.
