I’m happy ultimate leaned hard on the fan favorites, but it had an unintended effect of making people think the roster would be only fan favorites.
Leading to unfortunate reactions.

Guess I should mention that I don't dislike fan favorites, far from it.
I just wish some of these fanbases could maybe...Chill a little when displaying that passion. Perhaps in a way that isn't so blatantly tribalistic and hostile.
Not to say all character fans are this way: It's just a small, vocal group. A very loud, vocal, entitled group.
I appreciate it when we're surprised as well. I sometimes like being won over to something I didn't know I wanted, like Hero or Mythra and Pyra.

Can't be too disappointed with roster picks if you're willing to broaden your horizons and try out new things. There were a few characters that I was initially mixed on until I played their games. Now they're some of my favorite inclusions.

You know… aside from crash… a handful of other characters I’m expecting it could be include rhythm heaven, the BotW champions, the Mario Rabbids, a Dragalia Lost rep, EMMI, or maybe something I can’t even think of.

Definitely feels like Ultimate has spoiled the community a bit, haha. Certain folks seem to have the mentality that big reveals like Banjo and Joker are the norm, while characters like Byleth are just disappointments. I always had the mindset that folks like Byleth are the norm, and characters like Joker and Banjo are pleasant surprises. And even then I don't think that "the norm" is bad by any means.

I don't think predictability would be that much a problem. The real is that the hardcore fans often have more niche tastes and fail to see the bigger picture - they game is dependant more on the silent majority then the vocal few.
A lot of us are also caught up in our fandoms and see characters as bigger deals then they really are. For instance, as important as Dixie Kong amd Bandana Dee are to their respective franchises, they're incredibly minor next to juggernaughts like Steve. Not to say they couldn't or shouldn't happen, but their importance can be a bit overstated.
Its always good for big games like Smash to include things for the hardcore fan, but a Triple A game like it couldn't exist without mass appeal.

Why are everything?
Patapon has been low priority as it's also physical. Have never played it or Locoroco, but have heard a lot of good things. Midnight Carnival is digital only so might as well just in case.
Definitely not the best name for a sequel. That's for sure. Haven't played the original but I want to get into the series at some point. The original did get a physical English release while the second didn't, best to get it now while I still can. I saw it's on PC, but my computer sucks and RPGs are just made for handheld.
It amazes me to see that the PSP was still getting new releases even into 2015. lol

And would it be THAT bad if just one character in each pass could still appeal to hardcore fans?

I was mixed on Bayonetta, Corrin, Little Mac, Terry etc but now I'm enjoying them. Corrin's trailer theme got me into FE and Bayonetta 2 is one hell of game.
I like to call that "the Smash Bros effect" in which a crossover game gets me into other stuff.

That's the thing. Since Smash loves its lowkey finales, and Smash fans are now spoiled by Steve alone, that would be the perfect time for someone who's the opposite of that to come and qualify as a "disappointing finale".

With all due respect, you kinda take anything slightly negative towards first parties/forum picks and turn it into a big thing. No one in this thread is dumping on fan picks, nor is anyone in here obliged to say they’re the best option.

No, but I would consider most of the content that got added to Ultimate base, and having Banjo be the plan B when Sakurai still couldn't make Steve, appealing to the core fanbase.

Ok but you see, a second ballot means my most wanted will be a lock and the only reason people wouldn't want a second ballot is because they hate my super popular character because he's not in the top 3 best selling franchises on the planet, it's literally impossible that my massive genius brain was wrong in this calculation

There's a difference here.
In this case, the "Core fanbase" being discussed would be stuff like, Ridley, K.Rool, Snake, etc at the time. Bayonetta wasn't unheard of, but she had a large amount of "Front runners" ahead of her.
She was much, much more popular with a silent majority than the "Core fanbase".
