Use what you got and swap some character names for new ones, change more that is directly associated with it, and boom. Being derivative is a incredible kickstart to new ideas.

You know, as much as I love Greninja, it's kind of interesting how it completely outshadowed its counterparts. While Greninja is pretty much everywhere in terms of promotion, Delphox and Chesnaught are barely present in the franchise nowadays (and arguably even in the Gen 6 days). The former doesn't really shows up and even gets overlooked by Braxien in promotion, while the latter pretty much doesn't exist at all. Hell, the only major appearances the latter has in the anime is a generic PotW showing and an obligatory movie appearance alongside the other two, that's terrible for a Starter.

Even Blastoise and Venusaur, who also get overshadowed by their counterpart, get some love in the franchise via new forms or merchandise. Delphox and Chesnaught have almost completely fell into the shadows compared to Greninja.
