I'm kind of upset about little mac being announced, I wanted Ridley!! Dixie king k would have been fine too. If ridley doesn't get in I will be so upset
If this proves anything at all, it's that characters that are attributed to stages already announced are by no means deconfirmed, and that the Western audience does matter.

With Little Mac's inclusion and the "alterations" made to the Boxing Ring stage, I'm like 90% sure we're getting Ridley now. Sakurai was clearly toying with us with the Boxing Ring. He's likely doing the same with Pyrosphere.

this.

Samus making fun of Little Mac for being too small for Smash and her Morph Balling around the gym is a great affectionate nod to the Metroid fanbase.

I'm even more hype for Ridley than ever. of course, I'm also lending my support to the future Little Mac mains cuz GODDAMN HE LOOKS SO ****ING HYPE TO PLAY AS

If Samus doing a size comparison isn't a nod to Ridley's situation, I don't know what life is anymore.

****, it's even a perfect joke to call back to in Ridley's trailer.

Sakurai confirmed for knowing more than we think he does.

EDIT: Eh, nevermind, turns out it's a reference to the old Smash Bros. Dojo.

Maybe in the next trailer, Samus once again pokes fun at Mac's size.

Then Mac points over Samus' shoulder, with a "look who's talking now?" face.

We then pan out to see Ridley crouched behind Samus. Ridley shrieks, and both Samus and Mac hightail out of there.

"Ridley Descends Into Battle!"

Not to dash hopes but i think its just because Samus is tall and its belittling for a woman to point out a man's height being that they're generally shorter.

Sakurai's tip of the day :
"When you see someone talking about the size of characters in smash, just punch them".

It's kind of funny, Little Mac's reveal pretty much reinforces some of the counterpoints we've been making:
-Reinforces that western appeal is being considered.
-Reinforces that being in a previous role does not doom them.
-Reinforces that stages being confirmed before the characters does not doom them.

Just watch as this is twisted into Little Mac's favor and newcomers related to these are shoved aside because "it's different!"

They brought in one of the smallest/shortest characters. It's only a matter of time before they bring in the biggest. ;)
I REALLY WANT YOU TO BE RIGHT.....But, is just that, this day seemed, oddly perfect. I mean, here where i live, some days ago, the weather was cold, and today, the Sun showed up, the sky was clear, later in school, I was so lucky that it did not have to do an exam, they delayed it, and the only thing that I needed to make it the perfect day, was to see the nintendo direct, and finally see Ridley confirmed, after SO MUCH TIME OF WAITING, I couldn't sleep. and when i arrived to my house, and eat something, I went to the computer, search for the damned nintendo direct, but my slowmo internet made it difficult to watch, so i tought, better I see the Smash bros page directly, and the Chellenger aproaching sign apeared, and the image started to show, but a saw GREEN, not PURPLE, and when i went down, I saw LITTLE MAC, not RIDLEY....What a great way to start valentine's day a day earlier.....with my heart broken....

I'm actually all aboard the Little Mac train. He looks fun to play.

But as others have noted, what this shows is that a Newcomer can be revealed long after their home stage has been introduced.

I mean, the "Smash Circuit" stage was revealed at E3 2013, and we've only just gotten a Little Mac confirmation eight months later.

It's therefore a safe bet to think that Pyrosphere will be Ridley's home stage, and that Palutena's Temple will be Her Grace's home stage.

We're Space Pirates, Andrea. We don't give up quite so easily. ;)

Little Mac had his own stage the whole time.
Palutena has her own stage with the leak.
Now lets just say that my hype is back.

I was a little bit sad, because as much I like Little Mac, he isn't one of my most requested newcomers.

Then I read your posts and all of my hype is back.

I love you, guys!

You know, if it makes you feel better, this may actually have actually boosted Ridley's chances.

I mean, first we have Charizard, who's been a Pokeball summon in 64 and Melee, and later playable in Brawl.

And now we have Little Mac, once and Assist Trophy in Brawl, and now playable in Smash 4.

So who's to say Ridley can't pass from being a boss in Brawl to playable now?

What new Pokemon character would they possibly add WITH Mewtwo? I'm thinking it's much more likely that we'll see the Brawl cast return with the addition of Mewtwo.

I think that should open up one slot on there.

I knew it!

I knew that Sakurai was willing to change his mind on certain characters regarding their roles! First we had Charizard, and now it's Little Mac. It's only a matter of time until we find out about Ridley.

I actually laughed out loud when I saw Samus point out how small Mac was compared to her. It might be just me, but I think Little Mac was sized up from Brawl.

I think you're right, he probably did get a little bigger. He was miniscule in Brawl. Nevertheless, he's still decently small.

I am not sure if there will be new Pokémon rep this time, besides Mewtwo. A DK character isn't a shoe in either.

I think 12-15 Newcomers is the sweetspot for Newcomers (especially if we grant No Cuts + Mewtwo). So Ridley can surely fit in there***. The final roster will likely be between 45-52 characters.

***He may need to take up two slots to himself though. :troll:

A Dixie-Diddy duo is still plausible, despite their absence from today's Direct. And of course, K Rool's a-koming.

As for Pokemon, I'm thinking Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Lucario, Mewtwo, and a standalone Charizard.

Jiggles because Original12(4Life), Mewtwo because of the landslide of arguments and factors in his favour, and Charizard because he's the ostensible poster boy for the Mega Evolution mechanic, and was prominent in X&Y(/Pokemon Origins). The Pokemon Trainer idea was very novel and unique, but the Swap Out and Stamina gimmicks held all three Pokemon characters back, so you might as well keep the most deserving one.

The most deserving one is Ivysaur, though. IMO they can scrap the Pkmn Trainer (he looks awful) and give separate slots for Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard. The characters are already complete, there is no need to fix anything in their movesets (I think...), so they only need to upgrade the textures, etc. As of Donkey Kong, yes Diddy/Dixie is still possible, especially if he isn't revealed on the 21th, but I wouldn't say a new rep for the series is a "shoe in". Perhaps Sakurai think DK and Diddy are more than enough to represent the series.

I guess three separate Pokemon characters is a possibility. But this would mean seven individual Pokemon characters int he roster. I went with Charizard due to his recent prominence in the Pokemon series.

If they are to return, then the only moveset changes would be a new Down B and individual Final Smashes.

At this point, I do agree (sadly) that Diddy-Dixie are more likely than K Rool, and that the latter's chances are much less secure. But who else is going to show those pesky Kongs what's what? ;)

Little Mac, of course. He's already taken on Donkey Kong, so Diddy and Dixie should be no problem. :awesome:

So much genwunnerz that it I almost made me puke. :p

Seriously though, I don't give a single **** about Pokémon reps. I played the series for fifty years, but after XY, I finally lost my interest for the series. I am done with it, so whatever. Anyway, back to the point of the roster size, I wouldn't worry about that. I don't think it affects Ridley's chances that much.

The only Pokemon game I've ever really played was Pokemon Stadium for the 64 (in fact, I got an N64-PK Stadium bundle as my first ever game system on my birthday). So I'm neither concerned by this Generation thing.

The thing about roster size is that the bigger it is, the more time it takes to develop and finalize, since you have to balance every character in relation to everyone else. This time around, you don't have SSE hogging resources, and Namco-Bandai is helping out; but on the other hand, you have two versions of the game for two systems to develop.

For now, I'll stick with Charizard as my go-to Brawl hold-over. But I'm keen on learning how big the roster will actually be, in the end.

You wouldn't believe how many times I've played each mainline game in the series. When I think about how many games I could have finished with the time I spent with only Pokémon, I feel depressed.

Anyway, what you said is true and it is the reason I doubt most franchises already represented in Smash will get new reps (like Star Fox, Zelda, Kirby, Pokémon, etc). So far, Sakurai seems to be including characters of franchises yet to be represented in Smash with playable characters (Animal Crossing, Wii Fit, Punch Out and Mega Man), Rosalina being the sole exception. Actually, I would worry about Ridley if Rosalina weren't revealed two months ago, because one could think that there would be newcomers only of unrepresented franchises, making Ridley's inclusion unlikely, since we have two versions of Samus in the series already. My point was that worrying about roster size is pointless, if Samurai decided to include Ridley, he will and end of the story.

If you guys want something to worry about, here it goes: What if the 3DS version screw up Ridley's chances of being playable? The 3DS hardware is a joke (sorry, it is) and since Sakurai had trouble with Olimar + Pikmin and Ice Climbers (apparently), who is to say that he didn't give up on Ridley because he couldn't adapt the Space Pirate for the 3DS version?

Because characters like Olimar and Ice Climbers (and probably Rosalina) are significantly more complicated than any singular character would be. Also, the 3DS is comparably powerful to the Wii.

It depends. We all should agree that given Ridley's body structure, he is a difficult character to work around. The 3DS is comparably powerful to the Wii in some ways, but in others it is far weaker than the Wii, let alone the Wii U. Even if the 3DS had the exact same power as the Wii, that wouldn't mean much. Don't get me wrong, I am planing on buying the 3DS version, so I am not just hating on it.

Monster Hunter has monsters far larger and far more complex then anything Ridley would bring to Smash and to top it off 2 of them can be in the same area along with smaller monsters. If anything, characters like Rosalina should've been more worried about getting as duo characters are more taxing on the system.

Olimar and the IC would be more complex because you have multiple characters/objects at play at the same time. You have to program the behaviours of the Pikmin and Nana (and the Lumas, and perhaps the passive Kong in a Diddy-Dixie duo). I can see such a thing being an obstacle on the 3DS hardware.

On the other hand, Ridley is a standalone character. If there were to be any programming troubles, it would consist of perfecting his animations/accounting for his aerial-heavy playstyle/etc.

EDIT: Ninja'd. Point still stands, though.

But dual characters are harder than any singular character. Period. They're going to be way more work for the console than anyone with slightly strange proportions; the toughest thing there would be animations. There's no reason whatsoever to believe the 3DS can't handle Ridley.

Your forgetting the E3 trailer where they show off Ridley, King K. Rool and Krystal after announcing a Wii Metroid and 3ds Metroid, a new Wii U star fox and tropical freeze for the 3ds.

Monster Hunter has monsters far larger and far more complex then anything Ridley would bring to Smash and to top it off 2 of them can be in the same area along with smaller monsters. If anything, characters like Rosalina should've been more worried about getting as duo characters are more taxing on the system.
No need to tell me that, I have more than 100 hours clocked on Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Monster Hunter isn't a fighting game, though.

I see, that makes sense. It is a little bit relieving too.

Anyway guys, forget I said anything about Ridley and the 3DS version. :p
