I know we often cover "why Ridley should be in the game as playable", but my friend just asked me a very interesting question. "Why does it matter so much to you?"
To be perfectly honest, I was kind of against Ridley at one point in time. To me, it was really a matter of how would he fit in? Is he really too big? Or would he just be a clone of Charizard? But I guess seeing this thread develop, it's actually a lot of fun seeing that the people who genuinely want Ridley see him as a great addition to Smash Bros. In reality, Samus and Zero Suit Samus are the same person, and that basically means only two variations of 1 character representing her own franchise. And I agree, the Metroid line-up in Smash Bros shouldn't be limited to just Samus Aran.
With the theories going around that he can be scaled down, I wasn't completely on board with it, and still had some skepticism. And then we had the Direct. Seeing that, I thought Ridley was done for, but with the speculation regarding the shadow, it got me intrigued True, I wasn't sure on how one could make Ridley a unique fighter in Smash Bros, as if I was in Sakurai's place, "How can you make this character a completely different character from Charizard, who can also fly and breathe fire?" I couldn't even come up with a moveset for Robin, as I was more concerned with what they'd look like, and even if it's just the default build, Sakurai made Robin look great! (That hair...)
Regarding Ridley, many users such as SchAlternate, said that Ridley has a lot more potential than being a 'Charizard Clone': and one user also brought up Firebrand from Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, and I guess after that, I thought: "That might not be such a bad idea." For now, I'm more interested in seeing what Sakurai can do with Ridley. He can make a character better than anything I could attempt!
I guess you could say that for now, I'm supporting Ridley as a 'passenger', and I think seeing him would be a great way to show people who aren't familiar with Metroid that there's a lot more to it than a space bounty hunter, and I know that there are many people who love Ridley's role as the Metroid antagonist, and it would be quite fitting to see him and Samus fight it out together in Super Smash Bros.
