So let me break down the options that I passed on first. Pichu, Dark Samus, Lucas. Pichu is the weak link here, and Lucas just feels like a natural loss - as much as I personally love Mother 3. Dark Samus is the one that I feel like I could justify returning, but I decided to bump up a couple of these other series instead. Worst comes to worst, I think they are quite easy to sell back as DLC later.

Lyn could have been cut, but I really like her niche within the Fire Emblem lineup in contrast to both Marth and Ike. Amongst such grace and brute strength is blitzing speed and technique. I think this trifecta plays off each other super well, and I don't really want to part with it. With FE being on top of its game after Awakening, and Lyn still being very popular, why not just keep the whole set? And then there's Falco, no reason to part with him.

F-Zero is in less of a promising state, but after affirming his place in the series for two games I think Black Shadow ought to just stay. And it just kind of feels good to keep some characters around that have become foundational parts of my version of Smash, outside of the ones that have found their place in the real version. So it's harder for me to part with the characters that feel emblematic of what makes this roster unique.

Genesect might be a strange choice to some, but it makes sense to me. First off, Pokemon should probably have one more character to put it at least up to speed with where it was in Brawl. Up to this point I've had a Pokemon from every generation, and I figure I may as well keep that trend going. Genesect is a personal favorite of mine, and it's not an especially random choice either. At the time of roster negotiations, during the transition to Gen 6, this Pokemon was prepped to be a strong presence. It was the last added to Gen 5, and had been prominently featured in the movie that debuted Mewtwo's Mega Evolution (hey, we can recreate it in Smash). On top of those perks, it's also just incredibly cool. The design lends itself comfortably to a very unique kit taking advantage of its bug / steel qualities, and its big back cannon. Its robotic nature will make it pretty distinct not only among the Pokemon lineup, but the roster in general. We have Mega Man, but clearly these aren't the same kind of robot either. So yeah - Genesect is cool! I really thought hard about if there was a better choice than this, and I have a more obvious choice that I was hovering over, but for now I'll strike the Gen 5 iron while it's hot...ish.

Painfully I'm going to cut Krystal. I really wanted to keep her, I was going to use my final slot on her, but knowing that Everyone is Here is on the horizon I need to leave some heavier hitter vets as a selling point and well... To put it simply, Krystal has been scrubbed from Star Fox at this point. The series had been dormant for several years now, came back with Star Fox 64 3D and will soon be following up with Star Fox Zero (the first brand new game in a decade). So they're essentially soft rebooting the series back to Star Fox 64, erasing the progress that had been made and several of the new faces developed over the 2000s. With all this in mind, as well as the addition of a handful of archetypically similar characters in this game, I'm making the unfortunate decision to let her rest for now. I'm confident however that the demand to bring her back will be strong and fruitful.

Instead this final space will go to Dixie Kong. Demand for more DKC content is strong, and it did recently just get a game. Thing is, Tropical Freeze was a liiiittle bit late to have a significant effect on the roster right? Well in my mind, Dixie Kong is comparable to Wolf's production turnaround where she can be developed in a shorter amount of time and maintain some derivative animations and attacks to Diddy Kong. She is pretty unique on account of her ponytail, but is still sharing enough with her boyfriend to be considered a semiclone. We didn't really get any of those in Smash 4, so I feel like there's an opportunity for one. Perhaps as a late stage addition, or simply a happy coincidence corresponding with DKC's newest outing. In any case, it gives DKC fans a nice little treat while a certain reptile waits patiently for his eventual turn.
