I feel like, similarly to the other roster rebuild game, if we opt not to add three Miis we should probably have two extra character slots. I suppose we'll get there when we get there but I was trying to count up based on the upcoming prompts and wasn't sure if this was factored in or not.

We’re treating the Mii Fighters as three movesets, so feel free to reduce Mii fighter down to one and then add two unique newcomers.

The veterans are mostly a pretty safe selection of characters where I’m building up veteran franchises. Lucario over Charizard is fitting here as the transformation splits were revealed a little bit later. In terms of newcomers, Palutena highlights the Kid Icarus revival with Uprising, and she was a notable request going into the For games, and Shulk provides a more surprising choice, given that Xenoblade hadn’t grown into a large franchise at the time. Also, the Monado gimmick provides something new.

"Zelda is a newcomer?" Well yeah, for Melee and Brawl I attempted to do that quirky thing where the more rambunctious, battle ready versions of Zelda were playable instead of the princess herself. I'm kinda over that now and I feel like the fans would be too. But like, not completely over it because I want Tetra back. Zelda has earned at least four characters (spoiler alert, I'd like to bring Ganondorf back) and the Toon games are still around. Even though she doesn't pop up in Spirit Tracks (at least not physically), she still feels like a strong enough ambassador of the style. Anyway, getting this out of the way now so we can have more fun with the newcomers later.

Greninja feels obligatory, and unlike in Brawl I don't feel like shaking this one up very much. I think he was the right choice. But I am also keeping Blaziken around from Brawl, to play into the fire vs water dynamic that I think is important. Blaziken taking precedent over Charizard (for now) might be a bit controversial, but he's no slouch around this period either. He's getting a prominent Mega evolution alongside a launch event for XY, and he's still a popular face. So there you go. And then the other two are Bowser and Sonic, duh.

There is very little to explain as to why Yoshi and Zelda are here. Captain Falcon is a case where I want to bring in an extra franchise, and Captain Falcon is the Falcon Punch guy. Ike is here to help expand the Fire Emblem selection. I went back and forth on whether I wanted to add one of my Pokemon Trainer pokemon as Pokemon Trainer was my only transformation fighter at this point, and I decided to to hold back for now as I need a more time to fully figure our what I really want to do. Greninja is our promotional Khalos pokemon.

With Mario, Zelda and Pokemon being expanded on already, this time I will continue the trend of expanding on established series with Fire Emblem. Robin is one of the most obvious characters to keep around from our universe with Awakening's massive success and their unique niche among FE's lineup. Plus, adding the "tactician" is just a genius move when thinking about clever ways to represent FE. With these more essential bases covered maybe it's time to start bringing in new series, or going more unorthodox moving forward.

Some important vets return from mainstay series - Yoshi, Ridley, Ike - as well as the return of Captain Falcon. I loved him in Robin's Smash 4 trailer so I kind of just lump the two together. I've been holding off a bit on some villains until later since they'd be unlockables, but since Metroid is pretty limited in its character representation to begin with Ridley feels like a safe one to lock in.
