I first started by seeing if some franchises could lose some of their supplemental fighters. Mario and zfire Emblem (even in this thread Fire Emblem can’t escape) seemed to be an easy spot to lose fighters even though I’d like to keep Rosalina, Daisy, and Byleth. Next, I cut Sheik (a hard cut for me as I like playing as her) and Midna as there are other characters that I think are important. Greninja was cut from Pokemon as I though the other veterans were more important, and Tinkaton is an interesting choice for a new fighter, and she helps with gender representation. I thought of cutting third parties, and Tails, Master Chief, Snake, and Bomberman felt like the easiest cuts (I want to keep Tidus as I cut a few characters that I liked/want). Cutting down Xenoblade seemed like an easy choice, so Noah is gone. I also looked at franchises that could be easy cuts, and Arms, Duck Hunt, and unfortunately Golden Sun seemed like the easiest cuts. Finally, I made hard cuts with Tom Nook and Bandana Waddle Dee as I couldn’t think of other good choices for cutting.

The cuts are here. I had a hard time deciding who gets cut, especially at the end.

Zero was my weakest link. Five Capcom characters was always a tough sell. He was the easiest one to let go. Ken also got the axe due to Ryu and Chun-Li being better picks.

Bayonetta might be a controversial cut, but I think it may be possible anyway.

Falco was a bit of a filler slot, and Star Fox isn’t as active anymore. Same goes for Palutena for Kid Icarus.

Zelda being cut to just the Triforce Trio and Toon Link sucks, but it had to be done. Young Link and Impa aren’t enough to stay.

Meowscarda is a case of having to cut a Pokémon because I have to.

Sonic having three characters is a similar fluke like Street Fighter was. I decided to cut Shadow since Eggman was a bit more unique.

My opinion on Octoling is that I struggle to see how it can be implemented. I think it’s fine they get cut and possibly relegated to an alt for Inkling.

Four Xenoblade characters was always a hard sell. Rex is just the weakest link when Pythra are already present, and he more so reps 3’s DLC here.

Rosalina and Bowser Jr. are characters that had to happen. I would rather have Dr. Mario get cut, but I had to cut both. I’d rather keep Jr between the two, but keeping Eggman was enough to get the Koopa Prince out.

Dark Samus was tough, but between her and ZSS, I chose Dark Samus to leave.

Terry is one of the third parties gone, and he is the weakest link of the fighting game cast here.

BWD is such a fan favourite and highly requested. But over the other Kirby cast? No dice.

R.O.B. being cut is just having to cut down on retro faces.

The hardest pills to swallow here. Ness and Little Mac. Cutting an entire series out from Smash is difficult, but Mother ending on its own terms provides a better opportunity to move on from it compared to other series here, such as F-Zero. Punch-Out also is an easy choice to axe at this point.

Spoiler: Explanation

Okay, so are automatically safe. That's fine with me.

My first course of action is to trim down the third parties. But I'm going to make the decision to commit to all of the new series that I've introduced so far (Puyo Puyo, Resident Evil, Dark Souls) and just worry about cutting down supplemental characters. Tails, Knuckles, Ken, Leon and Sephiroth get cut loose for now. I'm opting to keep Chun-Li, who I really just think stands on her own well enough and is usually treated as somewhat of a package deal with Ryu anyway.

It feels cheap to cut echo fighters, but we don't make the distinction here so they're fair game. Daisy, Lucina and Octoling are retired for the time being. Lucina hurts because she was here from the beginning, to give my roster a unique flair against the others. Now that has become a bit less important, and Robin is here, so Marth will take precedent. I'd like to bring her back on principle later, but we'll see what happens. I'm also concerned about the negative effect this has on my gender balance, something I've tried to be conscious of throughout this game, but I'll have time to make up for that later. I'm gonna lump Toon Link in with these guys because he's a variation on an existing character too.

I like to try and maintain as many original series on the roster as possible, so the next step is cutting down on some series that can afford to lose a supplemental character. Despite taking so long to build him back up, I'm going to cut Pokemon Trainer since that character takes up three unique slots. Most people would probably keep Charizard, but again I feel like he just isn't doing a whole lot on his own that other characters aren't doing better. Palutena and Wolf are unfortunate losses, two favorite characters of mine, but under dire circumstances these two series can stand with a single character. My eyes would wander toward Fire Emblem otherwise, but I like the four I have right now. No need to cut down any further.

I'm trying not to walk back on any of my newcomers, but there are a couple here I wasn't 1000% on. I'm going to cut Oatchi and Ogerpon, and give those series a bit more thought regarding how I'd like to expand on them. I may very well come back to these two but I'm less confident in them than some of my other choices. Four cuts left.

Unfortunately now I need to start cutting into series with only a single character. I'm losing Ice Climbers and ROB for now, simply because they have less mobility, and less potential for new content than some of the others. Out of the more "retro" oriented series, I'm going to hold onto Game & Watch because he's kind of the defacto surprise pick, and Little Mac because Punch-Out is greatly understated in its significance. He's closer to the likes of Ness, Captain Falcon and Pit than he is the Ice Climbers. Wii Fit Trainer I'm going to stubbornly keep around, because she's great. Min Min and Ring Fit Trainee can stay because they're from contemporary Nintendo IPs and we're low on those. On top of this I'm gonna cut uhhh... Mii Brawler. Will probably reinstate them later but they're not especially exciting on their own without the two other Mii options.

One cut left, and this one is just kinda going to have to be a crapshoot. Excitebiker kinda strides the line of what I was talking about before, although the "Excite" series is surprisingly substantial compared to some of the other retro picks. He's also pretty damn unique and again, I don't want to slink out on too many of my newcomer choices. Maybe a little redundant with Duck Hunt already here for now, but screw it. Incineroar would have been a sensible cut on paper, but that'd be going to skim on the Pokemon for now and I love having him around. K. Rool... eh... I'd just rather not. And all my remaining first party newcomers feel like great picks in my book.

I guess, for now, I'll cut Min Min. Mind you I'd rather she stay, but ARMS is just on the more expendable side of the represented series without dipping too much into some of the new stuff, and truthfully I see an outlet where I can add her again very soon if the future prompts are to be trusted. I didn't want to rely too hard on those but in an instance like this it's necessary to strategize a little. So I'll see you again soon, Min Min. At least I've still got some more contemporary characters hanging around like Off the Hook, Ring Fit Trainee and Pythra.

Special mention to darkvortex, I like the spread of single-rep first party franchises but couldn't really get past the exclusion of Meta Knight.

This definitely threw a wrench in my future plans, which is frustrating but I have to commend you for keeping things fresh with some of these surprise limitations even while telling us the future rounds. Good compromise between transparency but also forcing us to think on the spot and come up with some creative solutions. Although I'll certainly miss a few having a few of them on my roster in particular.

This round was a pretty complicated one when trying to think of a choice for cyan or yellow, and then I remembered that Wii Fit Trainer has a cyan shirt as her default shirt color. For magenta, Amy is admittedly an indulgent pick, but I can always add Mewtwo or Waluigi later. For yellow, I went with Oatchi as Pikmin 4 is a fresh game.

Mii Gunner was an easy follow-up to Mii Brawler.

Jigglypuff is the weakest link of the original 12, but I think if this roster is this big, Puff can return.

Funky Kong is a curveball pick, and essentially a DK echo. But I think DK has earned its third rep, even if it isn’t K. Rool.
